Hi Shawnee, Your listing of the Old Mormon Cemetery had a name on it that was of interest to me. It was George Rahn died 1879. I have two George Rahns in my data; one of these could be the one listed there but can't tell for certain. I will add it here to see if you can use it. George RAHN - b. about 1836 (calculated by using the age on the ships list and the US Census) in Hesse Darmstadt Germany; d. May 11, 1879 in Sonora Township (as stated in Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Hancock County Vol II in 1921). His parents were Justus RAHN and Margretha Elisabeth Siepel who married in Hesse Darmstadt Germany on February 15, 1835 (from Lutheran Church records in Germany). The family emmigrated on the ship Onieda from Harve, France to New York, New York, arriving on May 31, 1845. Margretha Elisabeth died enroute(family lore). George married Mary Chandler March 14, 1861 in Hancock County. George and Mary had four sons; William b. abt. 1862, Charles E. b. abt. 1866, George b. April 4, 1870, and Warren A. b. abt 1873. Hope this is helpful. Also, the following site is sometimes useful for obtaining information on obits, funeral homes, and cemeteries. It contains some advertising as it is a marketing site. http://www.funeralnet.com/ Chet
Hi, Seekers! Maybe of you may already know - but some not, that many funeral homes now have their own websites. Below is one in Quincy, Adams Co., IL, - Hansen-Spear. So if you are looking for obits (some are maintained for period of time in funeral homes archives), just use a search engine or plug in the name (or what you think the name might appear as on a website) and you may find the funeral home you are seeking. Some cemeteries also have their own websites. It is another tool in finding those elusive ancestors...sometimes. Good searching! Shirley: [email protected] http://www.hansenspear.com/

Hi All, I have been going through the Hancock County site fixing links and other things and found the links to the Trautvetter and the Sowers families http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilhancoc/Hancock_famhist.html Are no longer working and I do not have a backup copy in my files. Did someone that is still on this list send the information to Terasa? If so can you please send it to me so I will have a copy on my backup hard drive. I need to get it back on the website but I can't do it without a backup copy. I removed the names on the website so until I hear from the people who submitted the information on those family stories, they will no longer be on the website because there is no link. Shawnnee

I too found a family history "quirk" that ended up causing me countless hours of research time, searching in the wrong places. My grandfather died in an Iowa rock quarry accident at age 21 back in the 1920's. He left a 19 year old widow and a baby son. Apparently he never spoke with his young wife about his family history much. She only knew his father and step mother who lived across the river about 20 miles away. A dispute with them a few years later caused a permanent rift and both sides lost contact with each other forever. That baby son never got the chance to know his father's family. 65 years later, I took up the hunt for my dad (that very baby boy who lost his dad). I told him I'd find who his grandparents were and where they came from. First, I got a copy of his own parent's marriage certificates: But in his dad's family section, for "mother's name" it was written "does not remember". Next, I ordered a copy of his death record from the rock quarry accident. On that document it was written: Born: Macomb Mother: Mary Ingram I don't know who wrote those down, but it caused me about two years of misplaced research. His mother's real name (found years later on a divorce document in Knox, Co. Maquon, IL) was Etta "May" INGRAM. I have a feeling the person who told the coroner "Macomb" must have meant "Maquon". We'll never know who gave the information to the coroner, but perhaps it was a very distraught, very poor, teenaged widow - left alone with a new born baby; My dear grandma. In a message dated 3/31/2004 1:45:23 AM US Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Shawnnee and all others, Your discoveries are very interesting and provoking in terms of trying to get the facts straight. Although I cannot disclose the actual facts because my father is still living, I am faced with a similar situation. His birth certificate is recorded in Hancock County, Illinois. However, he has told me that he and his brother were both born in St. Joseph Hospital in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. Because their uncle was either the doctor who delivered them or involved with the deliveries, he had their births recorded in Illinois. Just a quirk perhaps but something that also adds to the mysteries we deal with in trying to delve into the truths involved with our pasts.
