    1. Re: [ILHANCOC] Robert Thompson
    2. Hi Robert, Thanks a lot for checking that for me. If I learn anything more will let you know. I hope all the legal problems get worked out. Several years ago didn't Illinois pass some kind of law where home owners had to care for these cemeteries on their land? I thought I remember someone telling me that. Keep up the good work and I will look forward to hearing from you again. Roberta.

    3. Hi, Roberta, I checked at the Historical Society today but they evidently don't have a card on this Robert or Isabella Thompson. If I find anything on them in our material I'll let you know. I've been trying to make up a file of the annual indexes of several of our old church papers which contained obituaries, to make it easier for myself to find them. I have a considerable number of indexes copied but have a ways to go. The work at the cemetery is progressing but still in progress. If I find more names on stones, I'll let you know. The status of the road to the cemetery is now in the process of being reviewed by an attorney, and when I hear the results I will pass it on. The property around the cemetery was sold last year (unknown to me) without excepting the cemetery in the legal description, so some correction will have to be made somehow. I'll let the attorneys work that out, and help them if they ask me. Sincerely, Robert On Thu, 3 Jun 2004 23:16:42 EDT [email protected] writes: > Hi Robert, > Hope you had a good day at the cemetery. 2. Hi Robert, Hope you had a good day at the cemetery. From what I remember of the death article I saw on Robert Thompson it mentioned either his wife of Mother being sick in bed and unable to attend his funeral so I wonder if he died the 23 May 1882 and his wife on the 26 May 1882. I think you will find his death notice listed in Bowen but not sure of that. Let me know if you don't have time to check the Historical Society so I can write them. Thanks. Roberta Summers

    3. Dear Coleen, This is very good to know. I had recently found obituaries of Robert and Almeda Kimbrough and put them in a manila file of obituaries of people from Middle Creek which I am accumulating. I look forward to whatever you can find as your source of info that Robert and Isabella Thompson are buried at Old Brick. I'm sure there are many unmarked graves. I noticed that the Kimbrough lot was at one time marked off by four corner stones, each with the letter "K". There is a large stone which just says Kimbrough, and then there are small stones which have only the given names of the person and their dates. 2. Robert L Webb
    3. Dear Ron, Thanks for your help in locating the burials of those I didn't find. I realize now that I DID find Jesse Barnum, but forgot to measure the distance for the plat I am making. Your hints will help greatly! I feel sure the others are also there, and now I have clues as to where to look when I go back out there tomorrow. Another kind gentleman plans to go with me, to witch for unmarked graves, and while he's doing that, I will try to find the stones I missed, and will also take my digital camera and take pictures of the two Thurber stones mentioned below. I'm excited to know one is your ancestor. Wonderful! The two Thurber stones I found were just a little north of James Thurber's, but in the same row north and south. I'll send you my plat by mail, although I know it is still very imperfect and incomplete, and will be revised. The reading of the stone I took on William T. Thurber was as follows: d. Aug. 7, 1866, age 39 yrs, 2 mo. 15 days. My measurement of the stone was: 62' from the North fence. 117' from the East fence. Hope I didn't make an error in reading. The reading we took of the stone for John W. Thurber was as follows: d. Sep. 25, 1871, age 19 yrs, 5 mo., 14 days (s/o William and Keziah Thurber). My measurement - 64' from the North fence, 117' from the East fence. The actual cemetery (acre) itself looks as about as good right now as it has for a long time, I imagine. Having been mowed with a riding mower just a week ago. My reading of Jesse Davis is Jesse DAVID. My reading of the date of death of Coleman Wyatt is 1889 not 1888. Weldon Munson's daughter confirmed to me that her dad doesn't remember where Marion Munson (his dad) was buried and apparently he had no stone. I haven't found a stone for John C. Berry either. Will keep working and looking. One thing I really would like to know, right now, is whether there is a law requiring the landowner to grant access to a cemetery if it is landlocked. It is almost as perfect as the day it was inscribed. The stone for Hannah C. Wardwell was laying flat on the ground when I found it. I still have a photo of it. It may be covered over by weeds. > Besides a baby rabbitt, a snake, and other creatures who were there > visiting, we found two stones which were not on the burial lists we have > seen: > William T. Thurber > John W. Thurber Now you make me wish that I had come down there and helped. William T. Thurber is my GGG grandfather. Do you remember which quadrant of the cemetery those stones were in? Were they near the stone for James Thurber?

    1. Memorial Day Observances
    2. Robert L Webb
    3. Dear friends, This morning we attended the Memorial Day program at Moss Ridge cemetery. Then I went out and mowed around the bridge south of the Old Brick Cemetery. My wife and daughter and I spent most of the afternoon trying to measure the locations of the stones (the ones we could find) in the Old Brick Cemetery, in hopes of preparing a plat (knowing beforehand that it will be very imperfect). There were at least four stones which we know once existed there (as there are pictures on Ron Bryant's website), which we did not find (we may have overlooked them - or, does anyone know what has happened to these?): Hanna C. Wardwell Jane Mapes Horrace Gridley Jesse Barnum (spelled Garnum on lists we have seen) Besides a baby rabbitt, a snake, and other creatures who were there visiting, we found two stones which were not on the burial lists we have seen: William T. Thurber John W. Thurber We found at least six or severan bases for which we found no stone, but we didn't do any probing, and undoubtedly there are stones hidden by the grass. We found no stones for any of the following which are believed to be buried in the cemetery (at least they are on the lists), and would like to know if anyone knows whether there are or have been stones for any of them: William Cravens Martin Thurber William W. Shaw Purley Jones William Kimbrough Elizabeth Cravens Joseph Cravens Mary Cravens Charles E. Cravens Elizabeth Tolman Lucretia Wright Bryant Frank Austin George W. Cravens (we found a footstone marked G. W. C.) Carrie Printy Joseph Bryant Rebecca Kimbrough Henry H. Printy John C. Berry Marion A. Munson We made notes regarding what appears to be misspelling or wrong dates on several burials in the lists. 3. Can anyone on this list tell me more about some burials at the Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw? We were there yesterday to put flowers on the graves of my grandparents and two of their sons, when we especially took note of a well-kept mausoleum and a cluster of white military stones on the north side of the grounds. There is a cannon and cannonballs among this. The mausoleum bears the name of Edwards so I assume it has some connection with Ft. Edwards?? Most of the military stones bear only the names and military connection of those buried there but no birth or death dates. There is only one with that info and the death date was 1944. The mausoleum was quite interesting. Nicely painted and maintained. There is a barred door but an inside door with a hasp was left wide open so people could see inside. There are 3 gray vaults which appear to be very well preserved metal, two of which have the printing that they are burglar-proof vaults! Made in Springfield OH. Would like ! to know more about these burials as it was very interesting to see. The cemetery looked so nice with flag poles and US flags all along the driveways. Quite impressive along with the little flags on the graves of deceased veterans. Hope all of you are having a safe Memorial Day weekend. Mary

I haven't found any of my names on the list in just a short-time search. You can view the ones there and could find a lead. Also, you can honor your father's heritage by placing his name, or any name you choose to honor, on The American Immigrant Wall of Honor. You can have a family name inscribed for posterity at Ellis Island and the name will also be listed on our Virtual Wall On-Line, where it can be viewed worldwide on the Internet.
