1. [ILHAMILT-L] McAllister Hooker letters - THE END
2. Well Folks, That is the last of the surviving letters. Several of the letters from the early months of the war service of the 87th have been scattered among family members and I do not have them all. The letters were kept in a wooden box by Elizabeth Hooker (nee Cottingham). They passed to her youngest daughter Amy Hooker who inherited the house that McAllister and Elizabeth had built after the war. Amy Hooker married Chester Anderson (son of 2Lt Warner Anderson of Co A 87th) and they continued to live in the Hooker home until their deaths in the 1950's. I first saw the letters in 1973 when I visited my uncle Everett. My uncle Everett Anderson continued to live in the home until he became ill in the 1980's. My aunt Nina found the box of letters in the roll top desk on the back porch of the home and passed them to my father, knowing of the work that I was doing on the family history. About 1995 I transcribed them into my computer. The house still stands on the northeast bank of the McLeansboro city reservoir along route 14 west of town. Many of you probably still drive by it daily. It is owned by a cousin who is determined to save and restore it. Pictures of McAllister Hooker and Elizabeth Cottingham and a early picture of thieir family are on Carol's yesterday page The Yesterdays of Hamilton County, IL Also on the page are pictures of the Hooker family house, and a scanned sample of one of the letters. 3. Thank you for posting all those letters and the accompanying information. It was wonderful reading, and gave me some idea what the war might have been like for some of my kinfolks.
