Christopher “Kit” Hardesty, who was born in Broughton, served with the 6th Illinois Cavalry, Company K, during the Civil War, says great-great-grandson Richard Hardesty of Seffner, Fla. “He participated in the famous Grierson’s Raid in 1863, as they drove down through the heart of Mississippi, wreaking havoc on the Confederate forces and providing diversionary action for Gen. Sherman’s forces, who were waiting to attack Vicksburg, Miss.,” Richard said. He said his father was born in McLeansboro in 1909 but his grandfather — Isaac Hardesty — moved from Southern Illinois around 1920.
