    3. The War of 1812 by DAR President General, Merry Ann T. Wright Today we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. On this day 200 years ago President James Madison and the United States Congress declared war on Great Britain. Battles raged throughout the continent for over 2 years before peace was negotiated. The primary causes of the war were the searching of American ships and the impressing of sailors to serve on British ships, as well as the failure of the British to withdraw from the western territories, British patronage of the Indians on the frontier and the British unwillingness to sign commercial agreements favorable to the United States. When you consider these causes it makes sense that this war is often referred to as the “second war of American independence.” In addition to ensuring our freedom from British power, This war gave us another cherished icon. During the Battle of Fort McHenry, the fort was bombarded by the British for 25 hours. The only light supply was from exploding shells, which illuminated the Flag that was still flying over the fort. This inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that provided the lyrics to “The Star-Spangled Banner.” I hope many of you plan to hold ceremonies to honor the memory of War of 1812 Patriots and educate the public about this war and all it means to us as a country. -
