She was born March 27, 1918, in Hamilton County, Ill., a daughter to the late Florence Ada Voliva Knapp and George Grover Knapp. She was the last surviving of 14 children and the matriarch of her family. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Lawrence M. Hughes. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Newsome; a grandson, Michael Newsome and his wife, Kristen; and their two sons, Parker and Riley Newsome, all of Shelby. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.
