Joyce I don't have James Madison (Mattison) Garrison as the first husband of Elizabath Jane Carpenter but I do have James K. Garrison. I have no idea who his parents are. There is a James Garrison, age 30 in the 1870 census for Jefferson Co, IL living by himself. This may have been Elizabeth Jane Carpenter's first husband who she may have divorced before her marriage to Will Harmon. We know there was this divorce: Garrison, Elizabeth vs. James K. Polk Garrison age 5 making him about the same age as Elizabeth Jane Carpenter. I don't know why I can't find their marriage in Jefferson County unless it is just a transcription problem with the handwriting.
