— Shirley Ann Ewald, 78, of Belle Rive, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon. She was a homemaker and a hand quilter, and she was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren. She was born Feb. 20, 1934, in Dahlgren, a daughter of Charles and Matilda (Thom) Schilling. She married A.W. “Bud” Ewald on Sept. 27, 1952, and he preceded her in death in 2002. Shirley is survived by three sons, James Ewald of Mt. Vernon, Dan (Margie) Ewald of Belle Rive and Richard Ewald of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Paula (Steve) Raney of Mt. Vernon; siblings Charles Schilling of Dahlgren and Dorothy Glatz of Belleville; sister-in-law Stella Ewald of Dahlgren; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, Irma Kreher; a brother, LeRoy Schilling; a son, Terry; and a daughter, Kay. A funeral mass will be conducted by father Slawomir Ptak at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Dahlgren. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren with a rosary service at 7 p.m. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at Gholson Funeral Home, which is in charge of all arrangements.—
