Vernon Franklin Johns, 83, of McLeansboro, passed away at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Hamilton Memorial Nursing Home in McLeansboro. Vernon was born Jan. 22, 1929, in Walpole, to Samuel Oscar Johns and Anna Pearl (Davis) Johns. He was a custodian at Hamilton County High School and a member of the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in McLeansboro. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea; he was a prisoner of war. He was a member of the American Legion Post #106 and loved to travel. He is survived by his companion, Karen, of McLeansboro. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steve; and a sister, Thelma Imogene Steffler. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Rev. Robert Sefried, officiating. Burial will follow in I. O. O. F. Cemetery in McLeansboro In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the donor’s choice and will be accepted at the Harre Funeral Home , McLeansboro, which is in charge of all arrangements
