    1. [ILHAMILT] JOHN HENRY CHAPLAIN (1795 - 1858)

    3. (I can hear Sheldon groan and perhaps hear Jean Chamness roll over).  Yes, I'm hoping for some new breath from more recent descendants of John Henry Chaplain, 1795 - 1858, who was in this area from 1828-1858, off and on.  He has many descendants in this area, owned land in the adjoining counties, married to three women:  Mary Pope (No. Carolina) 1813 - ?, Nancy Walker McKinney (Franklin Co.plus) , 8 children; married to Elizabeth McCluskey (lived in Franklin Co. and Lawrence Co., Arkansas plus), 4 children.  My ancestor is from his third wife.upposedly shot while traveling from Imboden, AR, to Franklin County, IL, in February 1858. My ancestry is from the children of his third wife. I have a large file of various information to share with distant cousins.  Any questions? Perhaps there are some new descendants who can lend credance to the reports of his death? Thanks,  Donna Mariner Researching: BRADEN, BROYLES, SPILLER, FLANNIGAN, STERNS, CRABTREE, CHAPLAIN, JOHNSON, WALLER, MCCLUSKEY, HILL, PARSONS REED, PAGE, EVANS, BENSON, HEARD, OGLESBY, WEBB, ODLE, WILCOX, TANNER, LESSLEY, THOMPSON, KNIGHT, LEWIS, SMITH, CREEK, FINKS, MCCUNE, CARTER, LOGAN, ETC.  Most of these ancestors wound up in Hamilton County and Franklin County, Illinois, some in White, Williamson, and Saline Counties in Illinois. They traveled west from Virginia, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland...the way most of our ancestors came.  They were Scot-Irish, English, German with a mix of other nationalities.

    3. Original post lost a bit of info.  John Henry CHAPLAIN was supposedly bushwhacked while on horseback from Arkansas to Illinois in 1858.  I have not been able to confirm any details of this "family history" in any form, although my Mother said it was told to her by some of my Dad's uncles...no real names to refer to, unfortunately. His first wife, Mary HIATT POPE, sued him for loss of support, etc., in 1845,  while residing in Hendricks County, Indiana.  ?  Many CHAPLAIN marriages from a "supposed" additional family of 6 children are recorded in Hendricks Co. IN. (he was raising his family of 8 with Nancy McKinney in Franklin County at this time - he had not divorced Mary Pope) There is a lot of misinformation out there...some questions that need answers.  How many children did he and Mary Pope have?  Two?  or Seven or Eight? ________________________________ From: Donna Mariner <oldsalty99@att.net> To: ilfrankl@rootsweb.com; ilhamilt@rootsweb.com; ILwhite@rootsweb.com; ROWANROOTS@rootsweb.com Sent: Sat, April 21, 2012 9:17:06 PM Subject: [ILFRANKL] JOHN HENRY CHAPLAIN (1795 - 1858) (I can hear Sheldon groan and perhaps hear Jean Chamness roll over).
