Leo L. Karcher, age 88, of McLeansboro, passed away at 6:41 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.He was born in Hamilton County on Jan. 6, 1921, a son of Charles and Rosalia (Anselment) Karcher. He married Bernadine Frey on Aug. 28, 1947, at St. John's Catholic Church in Piopolis, and she survives. He worked at Auto Lite in Mt. Vernon for several years and retired as an auto mechanic at Teffertiller Motors in McLeansboro, having worked there 16 years.Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Clements Catholic Church in McLeansboro. Monsignor Joseph Lawler will conduct the funeral Mass. Interment will follow at St. Clements Cemetery in McLeansboro with graveside military rites by the McLeansboro American Legion Post 106.Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.In addition to his wife, Mr. Karcher is survived by a brother, Edwin Karcher and wife Wilma of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Irma Kreher of McLeansboro; and 49 nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters.Mr. Karcher was a member of the Elks Lodge 1882 in McLeansboro, the Enfield Knights of Columbus 7118, was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and a lifetime member of both the Carmi VFW Post 3851 and McLeansboro American Legion Post 106.
