Mr. Herman Joseph Aydt, 90, of Nashville, departed this life at the Veterans Association Nursing Home in Marion on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at 9 p.m.Herman was born on March 5, 1919, in Dahlgren, the son of Frank and Anastasia (Ewald) Aydt. He was united in marriage to Ellaretta Grace Tobin on Sept. 1, 1951, in Dahlgren, and she survives his passing.Mr. Aydt was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army with the 20th Armored Division under General Patton. After the war, he and his brother John operated the Nashville Milling Company from 1946 to 1999. Herman was a member of the St. Ann Catholic Church, of Nashville. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4384 and a member of the American Legion Post 110, both of Nashville. Herman enjoyed his work experiences and friendships with the local farming community. He enjoyed traveling with his family throughout the United States. His life centered around family, and he always enjoyed visits with his family members and friends. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed.He is survived by his two daughters, Kimberly Dahlen and her husband Michael of Carbondale and Suzanne Bremer and her husband Timothy of Wildwood, Mo.; five sons, Patrick Aydt and his wife Kimberly of Valley Park, Mo., Frederick Aydt and his wife Teresa of Nashville, Christopher Aydt and his wife Joyce of Edwardsville, Timothy Aydt and his wife Symantha of Decatur and Eric Aydt of Clarion, Iowa; a sister, Agnes Aydt of Carlyle, formerly of Dahlgren; and his 11 beloved grandchildren who brought the greatest joy to his later life, Patrick Dahlen, Luke and Jon Thomas Bremer, Matthew, Stephen and Gracie Aydt, Anastasia Aydt, Alexander and Joseph Aydt, Abaigeal and Maria Aydt.He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Florian, John, Leo and his wife Martha Aydt; and two sisters, Coletta and her husband Joe Karcher and Monica Aydt.Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Dahlgren on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Joseph Lawler officiating with interment in the church cemetery.Friends may call at the Campagna Funeral Home in Nashville on Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Military graveside rite will be accorded by American Legion Post 106 of McLeansboro.The rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Friday at 7 p.m.Should friends desire mass offerings or memorials can be made to the St. Ann School or Church or to St. John Cemetery and will be accepted at the Campagna Funeral Home.Online expressions of sympathy can be made at www.campagnafuneralhomes.com.
