Maxine (Lowery) Pendell, 85, of McLeansboro, passed away at 9:55 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Robert Sefried and the Rev. Mark Byars officiating.Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3 at the funeral home.Interment will be at IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.She was born May 29, 1924, in McLeansboro, the daughter of Earl "Cotton" and Edna E. (Hooker) Lowery. She married Carl Albert Pendell on Nov. 28, 1944, in McLeansboro and he preceded her in death on March 1, 1982.Mrs. Pendell was a secretary for the First Baptist Church in McLeansboro for 19 years. She was a cook at East Side Grade School for 10 years, a deputy county clerk for Hamilton County and she also worked for the Hamilton County Farm Bureau. She was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in McLeansboro.Mrs. Pendell was the first female real estate agent in Hamilton County. She was a 50-year member and past worthy matron of the Eastern Star Rebekah Lodge in McLeansboro, a member of the Daughters of the Nile and a bowler with the Hamilton County Queen Pins for 15 years. She played piano at the Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center for 19 years and also played the piano for the Praise Singers and the Sweet Spirits Four. She was a house mother at the Unwed Mothers Home in Carmi for two years and Mrs. Pendell did not miss a Foxes basketball game in 15 years.She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Sue Yesley and husband Richard of New Athens; two sons, Carl Pendell and wife Geri of Chester, Va. and Charles "Super Fox" Pendell of McLeansboro; a sister, Judy Malle and husband Joe of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Katie Cole and husband Billy of Tampa, Fla., Kerry Simmons and husband Steve and Colin Pendell, all of Charlotte, N.C., Kristina Yesley of Seattle, Wash., and James and Jennifer Yesley, both of New Athens; three great-grandchildren, Jaiden Six and Cameron and Marcy Kate Simmons; and a step-mother, Imogene Lowery of McLeansboro. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.She was preceded in death by her parnets; her husband; a sister, Helen Gene Adams; an infant brother, Bobby; and an aunt, Lora Lowery Patterson.Memorials may be made to the family and will be accepted at Harre Funeral Home.
