Hattie Ruth Marlow, 93, of Phoenix, Ariz., and formerly of Mt. Vernon, was called home to be with our Lord at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at The Beatitudes Campus of Care in Phoenix.She was born Nov. 6, 1916, in McLeansboro to George Monroe and Dora Marzella (Harris) Malone. On Jan. 19, 1941, she married Andy Hall Marlow in Perrysville, Mo.; he preceded her in death in 1986.Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Pastor Randy Sells of Central Christian Church officiating. Internment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Friends may call from 12 p.m. until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. Monday.Hattie worked for more than 25 years at Illinois Brokerage and managed the shoe department when it became P.N. Hirsch Company. She helped with the volunteer choir at Epworth United Methodist Church in the 1940s, attended Varnell's Rebekah Odd Fellows Lodge, chaired the Franklin School PTA and assisted Brownie Scouts at the Girl Scout Little House. Hattie was an excellent seamstress and made many of her own clothes and costumes for the Betty Dunham Dance Studio. Hattie also sang with The Mt. Vernon Community Chorus in the 1960s. In the 1990s, she enjoyed ballroom dancing. So much so, that she took the class twice at Rend Lake College , earning an "A" both times. Some of her happiest times were spent dancing with friends at The Star Step, to the music of The Golden Nuggets.Mrs. Marlow is survived by daughter Andrea Marlow of Terre Haute, Ind.; grandsons, Byron James Marlow of Phoenix, Christopher Shawn Reichenbacher of Mesa, Ariz., Brett Marlow of Mt. Vernon and Benjamin Andrew Saunders of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; granddaughters, Deanna Lynn Waggoner of Terre Haute, Ind., Kami Lynn Hernandez of Atascocita, Texas, and Kristin Jewell Marlow of Atascocita, Texas; great-grandchildren, Trisha Lynn Waggoner, Amber Dawn Waggoner, John William Waggoner II of Terre Haute, Ind., Brieanna Christine Reichenbacher, Holden Maxamillion Reichenbacher, of Mesa, Ariz., Michael Leo Hernandez of Atascocita, Texas, and Joshua Marlow and Savannah Dawn Marlow of Mt. Vernon; a nephew, Edward Keith Marlow of Charleston; and a niece, Karen Lee Marlow of Mt. Vernon as well as many dear friends.In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Tony Lee Marlow; brothers, John Malone, Fred Malone, Monroe Malone, Gene Malone and Charlie Malone; a sister, Bertha Malone; and a grandson, John David Saunders II.Hattie will be remembered for her unconquerable spirit, endearing smile, contagious laugher, sharp wit and compassion for her pets.
