    1. [ILHAMILT-L] Josiah Dobbs, 1820s-1830s

    3. Hello List-- I am searching for any reference to Josiah Dobbs (prob. b.abt. 1785, prob. NC) in Hamilton Co. in the 1820s and early 1830s. I believe he came to IL from NC (possibly SC or GA). I have him on the early censuses, the 1832 voter list, and he's referred to as the J.P. who performed an 1834 wedding. I am particularly interested in finding any record of marriage and/or death of a wife, and birth of a son around 1827. I am descended from a Josiah Dobbs, Jr., b. IL 1827, who purchased land and married in Wayne Co. I feel like this older Josiah in Hamilton has got to be my next link. I haven't been able to turn up any other Dobbses that seem possible. It is known that Josiah b. 1785 NC married in 1829 Mary (?) and had a passel of children. At some point they went to Wayne Co. But I think this Josiah must have had a previous wife. Can anybody help me?

    3. The land records say that Josiah, Sr, bought one piece of land in Hamilton County in 1833...but after 1836 all other land records are for Wayne County. Josiah, Jr, purchased his land in Jefferson County after 1851. There are very few Dobbs marriages in Hamilton County, IL: William Dobbs (s/o Josiah Dobbs) married Eliza Garrison (d/o Samuel Garrison) on 28 Nov 1832. Isaac Dobbs married Martha Cricel (d/o Henry Cricel) on 31 Jan 1833. William Paskel married Matilda Dobbs on 19 Oct 1841. William W Beaty married Loisa Dobbs on 13 Jul 1848. Oliver S Rittenhouse married Miss Martha W Dobs on 30 Oct 1861. In the 1820 Federal Census for Illinois, there are no families surnamed Dobbs in Illinois. By the 1830 census for Hamilton County, Josiah Dobbs is enumerated. Josiah is 50-60 years and has 3 other males and 2 other females in his family. In the 1840 Census, Isaac Dobbs was the only person surnamed Dobbs enumerated in Hamilton County.
