Shirls, This is majorly helpful. Loads o'info here. Some of the orthography is weird (as usual), e.g., "Leman W." is my grgrandfather Lyman W. MUNSELL. The Phipps info is very helpful - explains the reference to Harry MUNSELL's "minor children" in the probate docs. Thank you sooooo very much for sending this to me. This John MUNSELL from Scotland is a NEW mystery! I'll forward this to the MUNSELL listserv. That will intrigue someone I'm sure. Cordah, you are right about the orthography of the 1860 Census...it is replete with strangest renderings..at least the transcription is...this may be attributed to the original census taker's use of the phonetic or sounding name and old script handwriting. I have found several errors..one to be careful of is where IN is indicated as state of birth...often this was TN and misread I have found.
