MCLEANSBORO -- Daniel "Chico" Joseph Wheeler, 60, of Rocky Mount, N.C., died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, in Duke Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born June 26, 1951, in McLeansboro, the son of Thomas Winfield Wheeler of Benton and the late Eleanor Greer Wheeler. Dan was a graduate of Johnston City High School. He attended Southern Illinois University and was a graduate of Kentucky School of Mortuary Science. He began his funeral service career in 1983 in North Carolina as an apprentice at Gay-Yost Funeral Home in Rocky Mount. Two years later, he joined Johnson Funeral Home in Rocky Mount as a funeral director, embalmer where he continued to serve the families of the Nash and Edgecombe County area for 11 years. Dan dedicated his life and career to serving others in their time of grief and bereavement. His compassion and desire to provide the fami-lies of Rocky Mount with a family-owned and operated funeral home led to the opening of Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home in 1999. Dan, along with his brother-in-law and long-time friend, Mike Woodlief, joined together to become partners in business and service. Dan's commitment to his profession gained him the respect of families in the community, as well as that of his colleagues in the funeral industry. Many will remember Dan for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was one of a kind. His antics left those who knew him with a smile on their face, laughter in their hearts and stories to tell of good times shared. Ruth Zulene Payne, 89 1/2, passed away Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at her home in Laguna Niguel, Calif., with her two children, Janice and Greg, by her side. Zulene was the wife of James Guy Payne, who passed away in l986. Zulene and "JG" lived on a farm southwest of Macedonia from the time of their marriage in l940 until 1981, when they moved to Southern California, and divided their time between Southern Illinois and Southern California. During their time on the farm, the Paynes were popular hosts to high school friends of their Janice and Greg, who loved the horses, animals, hunting and Zulene's incredible dishes and desserts. Zulene was the daughter of Hale and Verda (Fulford) York of McLeansboro, and has four surviving brothers, Louis, who lives in Destin, Fla., George and Roger, who reside in Eureka, Mo., and Charles, who lives in Nashville. She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Jean Smith of Benton; and brother-in-law, Ernie Payne, of Thompsonville. Sister-in-law, Lucille Smith, of Henderson, Ky., and Percy Payne of Thompsonville preceded her in death. After raising her family, Zulene, returned to college, graduating from Rend Lake College and SIU Carbondale, majoring in elementary education. She also earned a Master of Arts degree in special education from SIU and taught fourth grade at Thompsonville Grade School. Zulene was a passionate advocate for political engagement and was active in her earlier career in the Republican Party and in her later years as a devout Democrat, who enjoyed spirited dialogues with friends and family on issues of the day. She also enjoyed friendships, lunches, dinners and visits with some of America's most prominent politicians, including Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator Robert Dole, Governor Michael Dukakis, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and President Bill Clinton, as well as Saudi Prince Faisal Al Saud, entertainer, Jay Leno, and journalist, Leslie Stahl, among others. In California, Zulene was an advocate for special education, and on her 65th birthday, was entertained by Grammy Award Winner Jose Feliciano at a special celebration with friends in California. She had a monthly cooking column "Cuisine by Zulene" in which she shared her love of cooking in a national health magazine, "Vitality," in the 1990's; in which she shared her love of cooking. She also was a founding member of the Friends of the Emerson Majestic Theatre in Boston, an advocacy group dedicated to the renovation of the century old thea-tre in downtown Boston. Zulene visited with family and friends in Southern Illinois last year, accompanied by her children, Janice, executive director of Los Angeles Program, which provides internships for college students in the U.S. and abroad; her son, Gregory, professor at Emerson College in Boston; and a devoted caregiver, Grezelda. Honoring her request, Zulene's body was donated to University of California at Irvine for research in helping others live long productive lives. UCI is a global leader in the study of dementia. There will be a celebrations of Zulene's life later for her friends in Southern California, Mexico, Illinois and Boston this spring. Alfred Frank Aydt, 81, of Dahlgren, passed away at 11:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital Nursing Home in McLeansboro. He was born May 24, 1930, in Piopolis to Charles Theodore Aydt and Katherine Christine (Rubenacker) Aydt. He was a laborer at A.E. Stanley Manufacturing Co. in Decatur, and past partner of Aydt Hardware in McLeansboro. He served in the United States Army in Korea. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Piopolis. He is survived by two brothers, Leo Aydt and wife Patsy of McLeansboro and Robert Lee Aydt and wife Mary Ann of Dahlgren; and a sister, Sister Agnes Therese Aydt, S.S.N.D., St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his parents and his god child and nephew, Rodney Ray Aydt. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. William "Bill" Harrison Adams, 89, of McLeansboro, passed away 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Shawnee Christian Nursing Home in Herrin. He was born May 13, 1922, in Franklin County, the son of Benjamin Harrison Adams and Nora Edith Brake. He married Helen Gene (Lowery) Adams on Dec. 17, 1973 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2004. He is survived by son, William Leslie Adams and wife Rose of Benton; stepsons, Steve Huggins and wife Pam of Branson, Mo. and Greg Huggins and wife Robyn of McLeansboro; stepdaughters, Debra Campbell and husband Gary of McLeansboro and Denita Reed and husband Bill of McLeansboro; sister, Mary Metheney of Benson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Lee Adams and wife Joyce of Dahlgren, Brian Adams of Dahlgren and Annette Farthing of McLeansboro; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Hunter Adams and Dakota and Alexandria Farthing; 12 stepgrandchildren; and 26 great-stepgrandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. And his best pal, Teddy his dog. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one infant son; sisters, Lorena Williams, Beulah Tate and one infant sister, Francis; and one nephew. He was a retired truck driver and mechanic and also a driver for Harre Ambulance Service for several years. He was a Southern Baptist minister at First Baptist Church of Lake Josephine in Sebring, Fla. and a member of the First General Baptist Church in McLeansboro. He was in the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was a member of Polk Lodge 137 A.F. and A.M, Scottish Rites Bodies and Hadi Shrine Temple in Evansville, Ind. Betty J. Tupper, 84, of McLeansboro, died 3:16 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon. She was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Beaucoup, the daughter of Henry E. and Georgetta (Richardson) Schmidt. She married Charles F. Tupper on Dec. 7, 1957; he preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, Roger Dean (Linda) Tupper of Mt. Vernon, Lester (Rhonda) Tupper of Mt. Vernon, Larry D. Tupper of San Diego and Donald G. (Pat) Kane of Florida; daughter, Judy Cowan of Peoria; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Charles "Chuck" Kane and a brother and a sister in infancy. She married Joseph Prince and he survives.
