I'm not sure what the problem might be. I just subbed to the list using one of my AOL addresses and successfully requested the help file. Maybe try it again and CC me on it so I can see what is actually getting sent. There could have been a problem sending to AOL at the time of your request and the Rootsweb server gave up after one try ... unlike regular list traffic which it will put in a queue to try later if it has problems. The server doesn't seem to care if the request is plain text or not and doesn't seem to mind signatures. If others are having a problem with it, let me know. I thought I would forward this help file to the list (see below). It is a file you can get by sending a message to ILHAMILT-L-request@rootsweb.com and putting "archive" in the subject line and "help" in the message body. Rootsweb refers to it as a "semi-useless" file, however it is also semi-useful with some helpful links. One link is particularly helpful if you are in the process of changing e-mail addresses and/or want to find out everywhere your old/current address exists on RootsWeb (e-mail list subs, GenConnect posts, etc.). The link is ... http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Just thought I would pass this along in case some didn't know about it. I received a call today from the Illinois Comptroller's office today asking me the condition of the Old McLeansboro Cemetery, I believe it is also called Founders Cemetery. This office regulates some state funding of cemeteries especially old ones. In that I am six hours from the cemetery, I told him I would ask this list because someone closer may be able to respond. He would like to organize a day where maintenance and cleanup is done. I told him I knew it needed a new sign and some sort of fencing to keep cars from parking in the cemetery. My ggggrandmother was Sarah Moore Heard Allen Blacker about whom we have had many conversations on this list. Her stone and James Heard 's are about all that remains in the old cemetery. Does anyone else have any interest in the condition of this old cemetery??? Look forward to your replies. Joan Bodenlos
Donna, Contact the McCoy Memorial Library in McLeansboro. The Genealogy Dept. should have some of the material you are looking for. Shirls
A relative stated that she had written a history of Valentine family. The only known writer was Veronica Voss, wife of Tidwell R. Voss. She wrote for the newspaper in McLeansboro and Illinois Outdoors. Have emailed the paper and no response. Can anyone give me a lead on where Voss family would be or how I can find where I can contact relatives of the families - Hassett, Cooney, Brewster and Daily. Donna in Indpls.

Thanks Darlene...this helps sort out one group of Gibsons from another...the J.W. in Jefferson wouldn't be James W. Gibson..he didn't have a brother, Augustus. However, Augustus' father, Samuel Sr., may have been related to James' father, Robert Gibson who died in 1851. I'll file this with other info I have on Augustus and look into the Jefferson Co. connection. thanks again, Barb ----- Original Message ----- From: Djshawn636@aol.com To: bmarco_1@bellsouth.net Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2001 10:37 PM Subject: Re: [ILHAMILT-L] Obit Request Barb, THE LEADER---1908 Postmaster AUGUSTUS GIBSON d Jul 6 herre. Good Morning Everyone, The list has been quiet so since I have found another of my lines that went to this area of Illinois I thought I would ask if anyone is researching the FOUTCH family. John Foutch b. June 21, 1806 in North Carolina died November 1, 1854 in Hamilton County, IL. Married to Eliza? about 1831 in Gallatin County. John is a half brother to my Levi Foutch from DeKalb County, TN but he also was in Gallatin County during the Blackhawk war. Family seems to have ties with the Bradley family.. and shoot perhaps the Prince family earlier than I was aware of. Also if I could go to Hamilton County this spring or summer where does one find a motel etc. Any pointers on research there would be appreciated. Gale Prince Nash

The land records say that Josiah, Sr, bought one piece of land in Hamilton County in 1833...but after 1836 all other land records are for Wayne County. Josiah, Jr, purchased his land in Jefferson County after 1851. There are very few Dobbs marriages in Hamilton County, IL: William Dobbs (s/o Josiah Dobbs) married Eliza Garrison (d/o Samuel Garrison) on 28 Nov 1832. Isaac Dobbs married Martha Cricel (d/o Henry Cricel) on 31 Jan 1833. William Paskel married Matilda Dobbs on 19 Oct 1841. William W Beaty married Loisa Dobbs on 13 Jul 1848. Oliver S Rittenhouse married Miss Martha W Dobs on 30 Oct 1861. In the 1820 Federal Census for Illinois, there are no families surnamed Dobbs in Illinois. By the 1830 census for Hamilton County, Josiah Dobbs is enumerated. Josiah is 50-60 years and has 3 other males and 2 other females in his family. In the 1840 Census, Isaac Dobbs was the only person surnamed Dobbs enumerated in Hamilton County. Hello List-- I am searching for any reference to Josiah Dobbs (prob. b.abt. 1785, prob. NC) in Hamilton Co. in the 1820s and early 1830s. I believe he came to IL from NC (possibly SC or GA). I have him on the early censuses, the 1832 voter list, and he's referred to as the J.P. who performed an 1834 wedding. I am particularly interested in finding any record of marriage and/or death of a wife, and birth of a son around 1827. I am descended from a Josiah Dobbs, Jr., b. IL 1827, who purchased land and married in Wayne Co. I feel like this older Josiah in Hamilton has got to be my next link. I haven't been able to turn up any other Dobbses that seem possible. It is known that Josiah b. 1785 NC married in 1829 Mary (?) and had a passel of children. At some point they went to Wayne Co. But I think this Josiah must have had a previous wife. Can anybody help me?
Does anyone on the list have any information on Mississippi Cox? She was born 1833 in TN. She was the 2nd wife of Joseph Hopkins McDaniel, marrying him on Sept 24, 1857 in Hamilton County. They had 5 daughters and later moved to TX. Thank you for any additional information you can add. Susan Kunst
