Hello List, Does anyone have access to the 1910 Census.? I am trying to find great uncle Michael A. Smith. b. Aug 1831 in TN. I know that he was in Craighead Co. Arkansas in 1900 and died there in 1921, but haven't been able to find him in the 1910--1920 Craighead Co Ark. census. I am wondering if perhaps he returned to -probably Hamilton County - Illinois in that time period. Since he was a widower and had divorced second wife he may have been living in household with some one else.. Would appreciate any available information. Thanks, Evalyn
Would someone please look for WILEY SMITH. in the 1880 census ? Would also appreciate any information as to time of his death, Have no idea when he died. I am also very interested in knowing names of his parents and siblings. He was born in 1825 in Tn., married Jane ? , and had the following children, all born in TN. taken from 1860 Hamilton Co. A few months ago I asked the List about the date and place that Sarah ("Sally") Malone died. She was the dau of William and Nancy (Nelson) Malone. She was born prob in Barren Co., KY before Monroe Co. was formed from it. Sally married #1, Thomas Franklin White on 6 May 1832 in Hamilton Co. She md. #2, Samuel Ashbrook/Hasbrook on 13 Feb 1843 in White Co., and md. #3, Elisha/Elijah Sullivan on 3 Jan 1850 in Franklin Co., IL. I don't know why she couldn't have stayed put in one county. Anyhow, around last March, some kind soul told me when she died and where. I believe it was in Jefferson Co., but I'm not sure. I kept the information that was given me and put it "where I could see it every day" as my Mother always said when things disappeared. I would very much appreciate this information (again!) and promise to have it tattooed on my wrist this time. <G> Thanks in advance. Shirley

Hi List, Thanks to all who answered my questions about the Land Purchase. Has anyone ordered copies of the Land Tract Sales from Illinois. Did you get much information in addition to what is already shown online? Did they contain any information that might help to identify the purchaser other than just a name? Evalyn

A section is 640 acres. Your descriptions indicate one-fourth of one fourth of a section. For example, NESW 10 would mean the north east quarter of the south west quarter of Section 10. Each parcle would be 40 acres. Sam in KY
Evalyn, <<<Purchaser: SMITH, JOSEPH Sale Type: FD Hamilton Legal Description: NWSE - Section 10 Township 07S Range 07E Meridian 3 - Acres bought 40 - Price per Acre 000.00 - Total Price WARRANT Soc. Stat. MALE Date Purchased 11/14/1851 Co. or St. Purchase UNKNOWN>>> The rectangular survey system is the easiest one to read. This land is located in the Mayberry Township of Hamilton County, near the North Fork of the Salina Creek and southeast of Broughton. The NWSE tells you the location of his 40 acres in Section 10. The warrant tells you that he served in the military and was granted bounty land for his service. I would think he might have served in the War of 1812. He could also have been in the Mexican War. Order your Bounty Land Records from the National Archives. <<<<<There are 3 more entries all for Joseph Smith everything is the same except, Legal description: NESW 10 -TWP 07S- Range 05E Meridian 3 SWNE 10 SENW 10 Could someone tell me where in Hamilton County this land was located?>>>>> If I worked this out correctly I find that he owned 40 acres in the NE 1/4 of the SW 1/4. He also owned 40 acres in the SW 1/4 of NE 1/4. The last 40 acres is the SE 1/4 of NW 1/4. His land is connected and makes an upside down L. This land is located in the Flannigan Township on the Southwest corner of Hamilton County. Section 10 is west of Rector. I have to make diagrams to work out land records and then they are subject to errors, but much easier than the metes and bounds survey system, which really requires using software and topographical maps. There are good books available to teach us how to read land records. I have LAND AND PROPERTY RESEARCH BY E. Wade Hone. I also have the 1876 Atlas for the State of Illinois, which was reprinted in 1994 by Ye Olde Genealogie Shoppe, P. O. Box 39128, Indianapolis, IN. 46239. It is a great help in located lands within the counties. There are also some names of property owners listed. Darlene
Darleen, Thanks for this 1880 Census information . Not sure if this is the Wiley I'm looking for. It may be him, with another wife named Jane. This wife appears to be much younger than I thought she would be. I thought he would be about 55,but maybe he forgot how old he was when the census taker was there. Hope to receive some information on Wiley from the 1860 - 1870 Census , maybe that will help to identify him. Thanks again for your help.
