John Lowry was born in October, 1758 in Virginia. His will written 24 June, 1848 mentions his wife Elizabeth, sons Reason R., John, David, Light W. and Young S., plus daughter Dorcus Taylor. He also mentions children by his first wife, but doesn't name them. I had no luck finding the name of his first wife until a few months ago when another Lowry researcher mentioned that there was an error in the Rowan Co., N.C. marriage index. The marriage which listed Charles Lowry as groom, John Lowry as bondsman, was really the marriage of John Lowry, Charles Lowry, bondsman. As I wanted a copy for my records, I sent for the marriage bond, and received this in the mail from the Department of Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and History of North Carolina. This marriage bond reads: "We jointly and severally acknowledge ourselves indebted to the State of North Carolina in the sum of Five hundred pounds current money, Conditioned to be void in case there is not, nor shall hereafter be, any Lawful impediment to obstruct a marriage to be Solemnized Between John Lowry of Rowan County planter and Sarah Lowry of the same - spinster, we witness our hands and seals this 10th day of March 1780 The mark of Signed sealed and delivered Charles {C} Lowry John Lowrey In the presence of B. Booth Bootee" Written on the back is "John Lowry's MB" There were three John Lowrys in Rowan Co. at this time - a John Lowry who married Ellender Lowry, also in Rowan Co. 10 March 1780, a John Lowry (son of Samuel) who married Mary Railsback (Rahlsbach), and the John Lowry who died in Hamilton Co. (According to his Revolutionary War pension application, he enlisted in the Militia in Rowan Co., N.C. in 1779.) The first two have been eliminated as the John Lowry who died in Hamilton Co. in 1848/9, leaving him as the groom of the above marriage bond. This not only gives us the name of John's first wife, but the name of the father (Charles) of either he or his wife - our ancestor either way. Another interesting point, Charles Lowry was also the bondsman for John and Ellender, probably Charles was the father of either "our" John and Ellender, or John and Sarah. If anyone would like a copy, I will scan it and send it to you as an attachment. Phyllis

Lynne, You may have received this information, but I have not had an opportunity to go to McLeansboro until today. I did not find a death certificate for Sarah Jane Deck. The only Deck mentioned was Cecil May Deck, age 6, who died 2 Jan 1902. Bk A, #1065. However, I did find a marriage for Jackson Deck. Jackson Deck(50) married Elizabeth A. Reed (28) 31 Jan 1875. Bk E, #3944. I did not find another remarriage for him in Hamilton County. Shirls

Harrie M. Walters is not on page 768. I think the index is probably in error and should read Hattie M. Walters (the mother). It could be that if there is a Harrie M. Walters that it is listed in the complete article and not included in this abstract. There are a few mistakes in these two volumes, but they wonderful books and very helpful in my research. Darlene
I think it is a wonderful idea that we write our own obit and put it in several places, including your safe deposit box. You might want to give copies to your children. I fully intend to write a very long obit giving as much history as I can. On sharing this intent with my husband, his reply was "That will cost a fortune." My reply, "Take it out of my life insurance." All joking aside, it is a great idea. My uncle's wife, put his birth place as the county where they married and they had been married for over fifty years. There is lots of stress at this time and people are going to make mistakes, unless they are family historians and have memorized all the dates and places. When I attended the funeral of my uncle, I was asked where he was born and told the children and wife. Darlene

This was on another listed and I copied, modified and pasted it to this email. I think this is a good idea. Phyllis We all know there are so many mistakes made on records people keep. When my mother died, I put her mother's maiden name as Lewis ,when in fact it was Davis and in 1989 my sister died and her husband put in her obit that she was born in Columbus Ohio, {Canton} that she attended school in AZ {MO} and that she was a member of the Mormon Church {his faith, not hers}. Because of this I wrote my own obit for place and date of birth, parents correct names and so on and filed it away. Maybe we could save others some work and mistakes this way.
