This is my fear - that they won't let me have copies of the index. I don't really understand the purpose of this policy, but I've heard of other places not allowing Xerox copies of indexes also. It almost seems the only purpose is to make it harder for people to do research on these records (which may cut down on wear and tear, but is sort a CATCH-22 sort of reasoning). Anyway, thanks for the help. A few years ago, while researching in Hamilton County, the staff members would not let me make a copy of the Marriage Indexes for the McMahan Family. They did not care if I copied the index (using a pencil), but I could not make use the copy machine to do it. I would recommend that you have someone copy the land record index for you and pull the records you need. Darlene
I descend from the McMahan (McMahon) and Cook families also. Reuben and American Ann (McElvain) McMahan (McMahon). American McElvains' mother was Lucinda Cook. Darlene

This land record query is a good one. I would also like to know how to locate Grantee/Grantor records for Hamilton Co, ILL, for my Lowery,Taylor, McMahon families. One of the children from one of my families married into a Cook family, by the way. Claire
Jim, I would also like to know the answer to this. Hope one is posted. Thanks Maureen

Hello all, Just wanted to let you know, that my e-mail address is changing as of Friday of this week. New address: Oznelm@aol.com Thank You Maureen Sinks Lenzo, researching the Peter Sinks family in Hamilton Co.
Hi all. Since some of you are doing a "roll call" I will send mine out too. :-) (I hope you are all warmer that we are here in Northern Missouri -4F) I am searching for information on the surnames: SMITH (see below) WHITE (see below) WARD (see below) The SMITHs were in Illinios in the 1830s. Simon P. Smith was born 17 March 1830. He married Nancy Leiter/Lighter in Illinios. (Does anyone happen to have an obit for her, or the location of her burial? I have heard that she may have died 26 June 1870, but where?) They moved in the 1850s to Missouri (Nodaway county, then Harrison County). The WHITEs were in Illinios in the 1860s. VALENTINE WHITE was in Illinois in 1864 when his daughter Estella/Stella Philena White was born. I know that when Valentine White and his family moved to Iowa they were LDS--Joseph Smith played "match maker" with Estella/Stella White when he sent Alma Moroni Newberry to Lamoni, Iowa to meet her and decide what he thought of her. (They were married soon after). VALENTINE and his wife Martha had 5 children: ALFRATTA, ESTELLA, ELNORA, ZEAN and FRANK. (Do any of these childrens name run in your family tree?) The WARDs were in Illinios in the 1840s. They moved there from Tenn, then some ended up in Missouri. I decend from Eleven/Levin Ward born in Tenn, but moved to Illinois to have his son Martin Van Buren Ward (b. 1848) (Does anyone know for sure who Eleven's parents were? Eleven's father MAY have been Noah C. Ward ~I am almost positive Noah is his father, but haven't found solid proof yet. (Noah C. DID have a son by that name and would have been born about the right time....but if the date I have for Noah C Ward's death is correct, then I doubt he was the father of my Eleven/Levin Ward. Does anyone connect to these people? Thank you for your time. Stacy (searching for the surnames: Green, McLaughlin, Wion, Jones, Truitt, and Stephen that came to Decatur county, IA, AND Stone, Elkins, Ward, Johnston/Johnson, Bowen, Gillespie, Coots, Shain, Polley, Clevenger, Hook, Bridges, and Smith that were in Harrison County, MO) Some say I am living in the past...I say "Naw just my computer is."

Each person that was required to sign up for the draft went to his local draft board. They filled out a small card (front and back)... this was the draft reg card. These are housed at the Archives building in Atlanta Ga. Seems like I paid $5 for them to send me a copy of both sides. Info I received from card was: His full name, wife, number of children, birth date, address and seems like parents name and where born. Also his description. I may have missed something... Best Regards, Trev
What Vickers are you researching? I have Vickers who married into the Allen family. Peg Spencer
Does anyone have any information about Jeremiah Wooten, son of M.R. Wooten? Jeremiah married Phoebe Hardester/Hardesty abt. 1812. Also researching WILLIAMS, VICKERS, HARDESTY, GHOLSON, KEASLER. Ken Hunt
While in Salt Lake City, in 1995, I found the World War I Registration Cards on microfilm for Missouri, Oklahoma and Fulton County, Illinois. Darlene
I seem to have engendered some confusion with my request about the draft registration records, so I'll reply to the list as a whole with some background. 1. Military Records, in general: I listened to a lecture from people from the National Personnel Records Center (which is in St. Louis) a couple of months ago. 80% of the records were lost for all U.S. Army personnel discharged between 11/1/1912 and Jan 1 1960. (USAF personnel records were also for those after 1947. You can request them to look for the records if you know their full name as used in the service, service number, dates of service, and military branch. If you don't know all of this, they'll determine if you give them enough info to try a search. They do have a lot of surviving info but it does require a search for them. Hey, they get paid for it, so I wouldn't hesitate to ask. They encouraged it at the lecture. They give priority if the request is for the veteran or widow of the veteran or for your parents but they'll do it for others as well. I can provide more info if anyone is interested 2. Draft Registrations - Those records do exist on microfilm. I've checked the ones for MO in St. Louis, but the libraries here don't have the records for IL. They are very interesting records. The rules required that everyone from 18 to about 45 to register for the draft over three draft registration periods between 1914 and 1918. If you have an ancestor born between 1873 and 1900 you might want to check them out. They have some good info. See, for example, http://www.slcl.lib.mo.us/slcl/sc/sc-ww1-q.htm I would assume that they'll have the records in Springfield, IL, but hoped that they also have a copy in Hamilton Co. That way I can go there and check land records and check out draft registrations. Jim Terry ----- Original Message ----- From: "d1anna" <d1anna@attbi.com>
Jim Terry From my understanding, there was a fire and "all the" or "most of the" WWI records are not around. Boy, of all the wars ... you picked the one not around or on line! Silly! HA!! My grandparents and father (Bill and Ellen Nora Terry and Preston) lived in Dahlgren from about 1917 - 1920. My father should have registered for WWI from Hamilton Co. Could someone tell me if registration records are available in the county or where I might find them in IL? I haven't had any luck with St. Louis area llibraries. Thanks for any help!
