    3. Steve, I would be interested in the answer to this also. My grandmother was from Beaver Creek, Hamilton Co., and my mother has always called " something " the bottoms. I wonder if it is the same . My grandmother referred to this as the area her Jordan grandparents came from. Presumably this is in northwestern Hamilton or southeastern Jefferson County. Not an auspicious-sounding place, at least from the name. I have heard they lived in an area so low that it flooded occasionally and they had to leave the house for awhile each time. 1. [ILHAMILT-L] bootlegging in Hamilton County
    2. Tom James
    3. I was told by older relatives that Blue Heaven, a building about two miles west of McL on Route 14, had been a bootlegging joint. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, who ran the place? Was it connected to the Sheltons or Bergers? I remember when Clifford Means was murdered in the 60's north of McL that some said this was connected to the Sheltons. Does anyone else have verification of these memories? Tom James

    3. Sheila, This probably isn't on the subject of genealogy, but the KKK in the 1920s was violently anti-catholic, anti-immigrant, anti-semitic, etc. They were also generally against the bootleggers, because they wanted control of the area, just like the Klan. The Klan also paid ministers to join to help them gain some measure of respectibility. Hamilton county was not a center of Klan activity, because there wasn't and isn't much diversity in the area, but there were lots of bad things going on around Herrin and Marion, as well as Evansville, IN, which even had a Klan-supported mayor, who turned out to be a distant cousin of mine named Herbert Males. The Indiana Klan broke up when their leader was convicted of murder. In Southern IL the Klan and gangster violence finally made regular people sick of both groups. The KKK in southern Illinois (at least, in Hamilton, Franklin and Williamson Counties) were not anti-black as in the southern part of the US. Mostly they called on their neighbors...they might call upon a man who had been unfair in a business deal, had sold liquor to under age children, had a house of ill repute, beat his wife etc, etc, etc. I don't think there were any cross burnings.

    1. Re: [ILHAMILT-L] Shelton Gang
    2. Sheila Cadwalader
    3. I think the Shelton brothers met Charlie Berger and Art Newman in East St Louis (the devil's den if stories are true). The two older Sheltons left Wayne County and were taxi drivers in St Louis; they both had served time in prison at this point. When Prohibition came the Sheltons ran their own operation and Charlie had his own too.....at some point they did join forces in Southern Illinois. Charlie spent some of his youth in Harrisburg and returned there to start his business....later he moved over to Williamson County, because the Saline County sheriff could not be "bought". There is a book "Butcher's Dozen" which has a chapter on the Shelton Gang. I think you can get this book from the libraries in Southern Illinois. Carl Shelton's father was a minister.... Carl even taught Sunday school. ladybug wrote: > Were Shelton & Berger gangs the same? ladybug

    3. Hi all, There is also a new book on the Sheltons, available at http://www.springhousemagazine.com/books.htm . A real good source for this kind of info is the Springhouse magazine at http://www.springhousemagazine.com/ and http://www.springhousemagazine.com/books.htm I didn't think the KKK kept many records since secretcy was a principal of their organization. 3. Funniest thing ! I have a letter from Southern Illinois Normal University (Carbondale) dated June of 1946. The letter is written to my grandfather, Judge Sid Ward of Benton, Illinois. In effect it says "We have recently received from Judge Layman (Franklin County History buff) a scrapbook that was kept by your grandmother, the late, Mrs. Lavicia Espy. We were extremely glad to receive this scrapbook. It is a material addition to our collection concerning the "Willimason Vendetta" and the Ku Klux Klan." I tried to locate the scrapbook when I was in Carbondale.....no luck, my visit was short, and it was summer time with few students and employees on campus. 2. Claire, Sorry, to hear of your husband's illness. Perhaps if you move into a retirement center you will meet new friends who are also interested in genealogy, or if not you can teach them about all the fun they are missing. Do hope you will be able to keep your computer. The nice thing about donating your books to a genealogical library is the satisfaction of knowing, they will be well used and you will know where they are if you need to refer to one of them. Best to you and your husband and God Bless. Darlene Shawn
