I gave up using FTM myself. I love Roots Magic and nothing else I've tried beats it. http://www.rootsmagic.com/ These are the guys that developed "Family Origins" which I first used. They sold out to Parsons who got bought by Broderbund and then eventually the guys bought their software back and named it "Roots Magic". They have trial version of their software so you can try it before you buy it. I love one new feature that let's you run RootsMagic (program and data) directly off a flash drive. Check the features here: http://www.rootsmagic.com/RootsMagic/Features.aspx I've been creating my personal genealogy website for years with this software (the pedigree charts and family group sheets): http://www.whalen-family.org/ Maybe it's time to dump FTM and switch. (No I don't work for them or receive anything for bragging about their software!) I get the same thing from FTM 10, it is just a quark of FTM10. My pc 16GB of Ram, twin 1TB sata drives, Windows 7. About every other time I get out of FTM it tell me my file is to large that I should "compact, my file" Then the next time fights me about trying to open. My FTM file is up to 10MB, I work with 150MB to 200MB photos with no problems So in my opinion it is the software not the PC. You can get a second hard drive for under $50 that will hold more than you could type into the computer in a lifetime, and probably more pictures and maps that you would likely ever store. If you have taken the trouble to type it in or save it somewhere, it is probably better to keep it than to delete it. Your computer can hold several hard drives. A new one will show up as a different letter, maybe E or F depending upon whatever other storage (CD ROM, memory card reader, etc.) you already have. You would simply have to get in the habit of storing all your new data in the new drive, or, better yet, devote it to genealogy. I don't know what sort of computer stores you have in your vicinity but I wouldn't expect that it would cost much to put the drive into your computer if you are not comfortable doing that sort of thing yourself. The best bet is to find a teenage computer whiz-kid and ask him to do it. I know it is too soon for computers to be in kids' genes but it sure seems that it is in their DNA to do this sort of stuff. Gail "RAM" is your "Memory" so if FTM is telling you there is not enough "Memory" then you need to add more to your computer. A computer can be configured to use your computer's hard disk drive to mimic "RAM" so it appears you have more "Memory" bit if you don't have a large disk drive in your computer, even this could cause the "not enough memory" message you are seeing. Computers keep getting cheaper and cheaper. For example, you can get new HP desktop computer with the following specs for $299: AMD Sempron(TM) LE1300 processor [2.3GHz, 512KB L2, up to 1600MT/s bus] 2GB DDR2-800MHz SDRAM [1 DIMM] (this is the memory) 320GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive (this is the disk drive for storing files) Of course you can spend more and get more. Myself, I decided my laptop was just not cutting it anymore so I bought myself a new desktop computer that has: 8 GB of memory and 1 TB (like having two 500 gig drives) of hard disk space plus have another 1 TB removable disk drive. I love all the extra space for storing program and files and the memory means I can have lots of applications running at the same time. My removable disk drive allows me to connect it to my laptop when I need to make a "road trip" with my laptop and have all my files with me. Sandy (Whalen) Bauer On 3/5/2010 11:35 AM, John T. Gail, The basic rule with computers these days is that data storage is cheap so you don't throw anything away. Gail, From your original message, it appears that your disk is full. The problem likely does not reside with FTM. When it opens, it probably asks to use disk space temporarily to store all the data it will use while running. If you have a lot of genealogy data, that could take up considerable space. Often though, this kind of message appears when there is not enough RAM, the memory modules plugged into your computer on the "motherboard" that contains most of the circuitry for the computer. What kind of computer do you have (make, model number)? What version of what operating system are you using (Windows XP, 2000, etc.)? What is the size of your disk? How much RAM do you have? On my XP computer, I can find most of this by going to Accessories-System Tools-System Information. The amount of RAM may be called "Total Physical Memory". If you right-click on the start button, click "Explore," move the cursor to the "C" drive, right-click, and then click on "Properties", it will show you how big your C drive is and how much space is used. I hang around on the ilhamil list. I don't know if I am registered or not but I get the messages. Months ago when my computer files were so full, I deleted a bunch of documents that had my genealogy reports on a particular surname (Bond, Hutchcraft, Davis, etc.). I cannot do the genealogy reports on my old Family Tree Maker anymore because I do not have "enough memory" and it closes. Shouldn't these documents still be somewhere in this machine? NCIS would be able to find them, can anyone help? Gail Hutchcraft [email protected] Ford County Illinois volunteer
Blooming Grove Church will be celebrating the 160th anniversary this coming June (2010). We are collecting photos to be used for a slideshow on the day of celebration. Anyone with photos of the church, cemetery, or church members (especially charter members) are welcome to email me photos to be included. More information about the celebration will be posted on the church website as the summer approaches. www.bloominggrovechurch.com Kyle Shoultz _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Powerful Free email with security by Microsoft. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/201469230/direct/01/
