Does anyone know is the Grundy County directory of 1877-1878 on line? I have a copy of Volume 78 of the Coal City Courant, Friday, August 7, 1981 celebrating the city's centennial. It includes the entire listing of the directory of 1877-1878. It also has an article reprinted from The Morris Herald Holiday Supplement of 1888 which describes the city and some of it's more prominent citizens at that time. I also have a copy of another newspaper - tried to find the publication's name on at least one of the pages to no avail but I believe it must also be the Courant. I don't know the date of publication but is recent (probably 1980's sometime). It's also an anniversary of the centennial and includes (among other things) several accounts of the Diamond Mine Disaster including a list of the casualties, also several articles about prominent citizens, listings of postmasters, town officers, etc. Is all of this already on line somewhere? If not then I would be willing to do look-ups. Let me get a listing of the surnames mentioned first - then if you see your surname there - let me know and I will look up what is written here. Here are some examples: a photo from 1906 of the Coal City Maroons soccer team. The accompanying article mentions some of the team members: William Enrietto, Joseph Rolando, Nicola Fornango and Dominick Gomarra. It also says that Fornango was long time the Chief of the Joliet Police Dept. And the article mentions Barney Vidano from Carbon Hill as one of the best soccer players from 1915 to 1947. A photo from 1924 of Faletti's Orchestra: Barney Faletti, Chevo Marsaglia, Bubbles Wesley, George Smith, Bill Carnegie, Emanuel Smith, Ralph Brown and John Anderson An article about William E. Somerville of Coal City - an early aviator An article (apparently quite some time ago) concerning a fire that started in the Park Theatre which destroyed (or severely damaged) several buildings including those owned by Montgomery Sharpe, John Skinner, Joseph Gomora, James Smolik, John Trotter, Charles A. Hill, Charles Redmond, Z. Kaplan, O.A. Miller, Mill & Thom. The fire chief was Fred Anderson. Anyone know the date of this fire? (not mentioned in the article except as being on a Thursday) Barry Jernigan
