Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wg.2ADE/1526.1 Message Board Post: Gwen, I found the following obituaries in the "Morris Daily Herald", Morris, IL March 23, 1899 Mrs. Halvor Grunstad died today noon at her home north of the third ward school house. She has been suffering some time with paralysis and its fatal stroke came today. March 24, 1899 Mrs. Elizabeth Grunstad whose death was noted in yesterday's Herald will be buried Sunday in the Lisbon cemetery. The funeral services will be held Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the house and 10:30 o'clock at the Lutheran church. The deceased had her first stroke of paralysis about Jan 1 and the fatal stroke was received last Tuesday. Mrs. Grunstad was born in Etne, Norway, and was 56 years old last Monday. She had been in this country twenty-nine years and had been married twenty-six years. Four children have been born to her, two of whom survive. July 25, 1904 Halver Grunstead, for more than fifty years a resident of Grundy county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martin Enger, in this city, Saturday evening after an illness consequent to a light stroke of paralysis sustained some time ago together with the infirmities of old age. The deceased was born at Etne, Norway, October 6, 1815, and was therefore, in his 88th year at the time of his death. He came to America in 1847, and after a short residence in New York state came west locating in Saratoga township where he made his home until about 10 years ago when he came to Morris to spend the last of his days on earth. Mr. Grunstead was twice married. He lived with his first wife for 25 years when she died and after a few years spent as a widower he again married living with his second wife for 26 years. She died five years ago and since that time he had made his home with the daughter at whose house he saw the last of earth. The funeral services will be from the home at 10 o'clock and from the Lutheran church at 11 o'clock tomorrow, conducted by Rev. Aarrstad, the interment following at the Lisbon cemetery. (both of these burials were in the West Lisbon Cemetery, which is in Kendall County, IL) Dec 6, 1918 Mrs. Martin Enger died last night at 10:40 in her home, 820 Price street, after a short illness from diabetis. She had been at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Olson in Aux Sable township, taking care of Mrs. Olson and was taken ill Wednesday. It was deemed advisable to bring her to her home in Morris and Davis' ambulance brought her here yesterday morning. She sank rapidly shortly after her arrival. Her maiden name was Stena Grunsted and she was born north of Morris on the Halvor Grunsted farm on the Grundy county line on December 9, 1878, and lived there all of her youth until her marriage to Martin Enger 22 years ago. A year afterward they moved to Morris and have lived here since. Besides the husband, she leaves three children, two sons, Clyde and Allan at home and daughter, Miss Etta, who has been employed in Joliet. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Osman Osmanson, Morris, and half sister, Mrs. Paulson. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in her home, Rev. Aarrestad officiating, and burial will be in Osmanson cemetery, north of Morris. (This is now called Saratoga Cem, Grundy Co, IL) June 8, 1922 Mrs. Omund Osmanson died last night at 8 o'clock in her home on Vine street following an illness of some time. Deceased was Miss Inger Grunsted and she was born in Grundy county 48 years ago, September 3. Later years in life her home was in Morris in Price street until her marriage to Mr. Osmanson June 16, 1917. No children were born of her marriage. She was a sister of the late Mrs. Martin Enger and her husband is all who survives her. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the home and 2:30 from Bethlehem Lutheran church. Burial will be in Osmanson cemetery. Feb 9, 1912 Mrs. Lewis Bentson died yesterday (pneumonia, asthma) at her home in Saratoga. Native of Norway. Survived by husband Lewis Bentsen, daughter Mrs. Tena Hagen and two sons Henry and Dennis Bentsen. Also, leaves a sister Mrs. Raymond Paulson of Grundy County and a brother Mr. Grunsted who lives in Nebraska. Burial Lisbon Cem. Grundy County Marriages: #4650 Belle Grunstad m. Sure enough, I find an Osmund Osmundsen, born 1824, listed on Bruk 1 of this farm in volume 1 of the Tysvær bygdebøker, page 305. Osmund was the 4th born of the 5 children of Osmund Osmundsen Nes and Synnøve Jensdtr. Lundervoll. It looks like he took over Bruk 1 of Lundervoll after his father's death, getting the deed in 1847, however he sold the place in 1849. Further, it says that Osmund married in 1848 to Sølvi Larsdt. Odland (also in Tysvær), 1831-1848. They had one child, Ingeborg, who was born in 1848 and went "to America" in 1865. While it is not clear in my book, it appears that Osmund's wife died shortly after their marriage and birth of their first child. No specific mention is made of Osmund's emigration, nor is any mention of a second marriage for him, at least in what I have found so far. I will keep digging. Geir will be busy traveling for a few days so might not be able to get back to you or the List for a while. Keith in California Gwen Butrum wrote: >Would some kind person do a lookup for me. An article written by Vickie Speek <mailto:vspeek@morrisdailyherald.com> (vspeek@morrisdaily.com) appeared in the Morris Daily Herald on March 24, 2003, regarding the demolition of the mausoleum at Brookside Cemetery in Mazon due to deterioration. The demolition will take place in June, 2003. Vickie is looking for descendants of the following people for a proper burial (some of these people are early settlers of Grundy and Civil War veterans). In an additional article of April 11, 2003, the Grundy County Coroner and Morris funeral director have offered their assistance with removal of the bodies from the mausoleum and burial in the ground where the mausoleum stood after it is demolished. Please contact Vickie if any of your ancestors appear in the following list of interred. The unclaimed bodies in the Brookside mausoleum are those of the following people: . BARNES, Chauncey N. He moved to Mazon in 1865 with his parents, and settled on a small farm two miles from Mazon. He later became a carpenter and managed the furniture business of U.C. Davis and Sons at a branch store in Mazon. Oscar died of illness on Apr. 27, 1932, and was survived by one son, Frank, of Delavan, Wisconsin. LAASE, Emma Bertha Elizabeth (1888-1919), was put in the Mazon mausoleum "temporarily" because the ground was frozen. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Peart Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wg.2ADE/1522 Message Board Post: Peart, Jeremiah - One of the substantial general farmers and constable of Goose Lake Township, who stands high among the leading agriculturalists of Grundy County, was born in Ohio, October 11, 1864, a son of Cuthbert and Mary Ann (Walker) Peart, natives of England. The father was taken to Ohio by his parents, but the mother came there alone. The parents met and married in Ohio, where they resided until 1866, but in that year moved to Felix Township, Grundy County, Ill., where the father bought 160 acres of land, on which he died October 13, 1910, having retired from active work in 1903. His widow lives at Carbon Hill, Ill. Jeremiah Peart grew up on the homestead and attended the schools of his neighborhood. In 1894 he rented land in Goose Lake Township, and continued to do so for three years, but then bought eighty acres in the same township. This property is still his home, and he has developed it into a valuable farm, erecting all the buildings and making other important improvements. Mr. Peart devotes his land to general farming, and his results justify his course. On November 29, 1894, Mr. Peart was married to Anna Swenson, born, reared and educated in Denmark, which she left when twenty years of age to come to the United States. Mr. and Mrs. Peart are the parents of the following children: Mabel, Ethel and Cuthbert. The family are Methodists in religious faith. In 1905 Mr. Peart was elected Constable of his township and still holds that office, while for twelve years he was Judge of Elections and for eighteen years was a School Director. Some years ago he joined the Mohawk Harbor of A. O.! O. Gleaners, and is interested in the work of that organization. A man of action, steadfast in his allegiance to church and party, he is one of the reliable men of his locality, and is properly esteemed by those who know him.
