I have noticed with great interest the topic of a naturalization search. If this is a service you can render, I would be so grateful for a naturalization search for Dougald (Dugald) Gilchrist and his wife Margaret Anderson Gilchrist, who, according to the "History of Grundy County, Ill., 1914", came to Grundy County in 1878, following a move from Braidwood, Ill. where t he couple settled after immigrating from Scotland in 1872. Their children were John, William, Ronald and Anna Gilchrist Rankin. Another daughter, Janet, married R. W. Robinson, son of Edwin Hayes Robinson also of the area. Thank you so much, Patty Mercer

He was natrualized in Grundy Co. on Nov. 5, 1898. He and his family were living in Pana, IL by about 1911. Frank died there and is buried in the Linwood Cemetery in Pana. I did locate the family in Braceville, IL in the 1900 Census. I am curious to know if any kind of school records exist from that time period. Four of Frank's children were born in that area, too. Are there any birth records from that time period? Thank you once again for your help. Regards, Judy

I never knew my uncle JB but have always been told that I look very much like him and from photos that seems to be the case. I may have a few photos of JB and his brother Carl Colleps. Carl was an ACE in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He was one of the original Flying Tigers in China. My grandmother (their mother) was Arah Mae Colleps from Waxahachie. If I have photos of JB etc I will be more than willing to provide them. I would also like to know anything that you can find out about my uncle as I was never able to know him since he died before I was born. My grandmother had 14 children so JB had alot of brothers and sisters and half brothers and half sisters. JB's father was Benny H. Colleps of Waxachie who died in 1963. Benny was a WWI veteran who was also a pilot. It has be! en the knowledge within the family (never varfied) that he was shot down in WWI in France. I probally have alot more information concerning the family history. Please contact me if you need more information. Just out of curiousity, what is the connection of JB with Missouri. I know we had relatives in Missouri but it seems strange to me that a memorial for JB is being done in Missouri. Of course I did not know my uncle or his wife and child. If anyone has any information regarding the Effting family, please contact Mary Jo Capps at her email address listed below. Thanks, Deb -----Original Message----- From: Mary Jo Capps [mailto:mjo@viclink.com] Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 12:17 AM To: ddhaines@earthlink.com Subject: the Efftings Dear Deb: I called the mortician in MO today and found out he has been unsuccessful in finding any family for Charles Edward Effting. He is getting a court order or something on 7/4 which will give him the authority to cremate Mr. Effting. Sorta sad, eh? I am excited. I just found your story of Frank J. Effting when my son discovered the website. I have been looking for Efftings for several years, but just Tuesday was galvanized into action when I received a phone call from a mortician in Eldon, MO, looking for ANY family of Charles Edward Effting, age 76, who died there a few days ago. He said the man's friends said he had a son who died a few years ago, and his mother Clara is buried in the Mt. Olive cemetery in Chicago. On the off chance you might know someone in that branch, I am writing to you. My part of the Efftings is that a Frank Effting married Mary Fleck (both from Germany) lived in Lockport, IL and had my grandmother, Theresa Josephine Effting (born in Lockport on 4/6/1861'ish), who married Charles Wesley Penniman and had my mother Josephine Penniman Cox (born in Ft. Scott, KS in 1894). Does any of that ring a bell with you? I understand there are several Frank Efftings, one of which is the son of the above Frank and Mary and which seems to be the one you hail from. Would he be a brother to my grandmother Theresa? What I can't seem to find is where in Germany Frank and Mary came from. Any ideas? Would love to hear from you. Mary Jo -- Mary Jo Capps mjo@viclink.com

I confiirm that the persons are indeed the requested missing persons. based on your inf. I now have a fair good record of the family which consisted of Ole H. Johnson and wife Caroline Riersen. O.H.Johnson, or Ole Jenssen Saudasjoen as he is called in local Norwegian records, was son of Jens Henrikson Totland (Hjelmeland,Norway)(1809-?) Married in 1835 Siri Olsdatter (1809-) from Ytre Ramsfjell, also iin Hjelmeland. Jens and Siri had three childre: Ola(1835),Ola(1839) and Anna(1842). Siri died around 1846, and Jens remarried Lydia Knutsdatter Hellot from Sauda aand moved to a small farm in her parish of Sauda. Jens was acting master of the local saw-work. I have a fairly good record of their roots in/around Hjelmeland, and I shall write a short history whhich can be despathed to anyone interested. Anyway Ole came to America in 1856, and in Stavanger, a distant relative has several of the letters which Ole wrote which describe the jurney accross the Atlantic, and later with a vivid description from life as a privat during the Civil War. In 1866 he married Karen gurine Reiersdatter. According to my notes she was born 17/10 1843, but according to your information she is listed as born 27/7 1844. There might be a mistake in my own notes, and I shall check. Karen came to America in 1854, together with her sister Elisabeth,3 brothers and father. Their mother, Guri Sivertsdatter, and their oldest brother, Sivert, born 1833, stayed back in Stavanger. According to my notes, one of the brothers died during the transit, and one more of the brothers died soon after arrival. I have nnnone of these informations documented. In fact I have found no traces of the family for the periode from they left Stavanger, till I have seen documents of the two sisters marriages in Ill. In 1880, the old father, Reiar, (born 17/12 1797), did live with Ole H. and Caroline in Saratoga (see p. 365). The sister Elisabeth, married also a person from Norwegian origin, viz.. Torris Johannesen Mehus (1837-1943) from Hardanger, Norway. Also for hhis part i have a good record of his family background and family history, leading up to his deparrrrrture for America. Torris and Elisabeth obvioously married in Newark 16/2 1865, and they are recorded having the following children: Carrie 1886-1960; m. Clif Wunder (no children?) Hattie 1886(+)-1956, unmarried John Edward 1880-1962, married Carrie Larson in 1902. Are told to have had several children, but no further information at hand. Jonny 1878-1880 Joseph 1876-1876 Emma 1873-1954 m Roy Anderson (no children?) Rufus 1870-1956; m. twicea) nelly fruland b) Mary Aske. rercorded having children, but no further inf. Cassy 1868-1898 m Emma Fruland. Children? Isabelle 1866-1867 I assume that Torris and his family lived in Big Grove, Kendal, and as late as in 1930, Torris and dauther Hattie lived on the farm. Torris also participated in the Civil war, but I have not read any documents relating to this periode. The two remaining challenges for me is now: - What became of the Reiersen family from they arrived in Quebeck in 1854, until the two sisters got married. Did their brothers died, or did one or two of them survive and started family. Did the old father, Reiar, farm, or did he spend his life in America as casual labourer.I can not find any information in the papaers to which I have access. -The children of Ole H. and Caroline are according to the combined information from you, and the few notes I have: w/ wife Caroline: Ole b. 1867 unrecorded/undocumented Hallie(Henry Richard)1867 good documented in your notes( appreciate to be informed about any decendants still alive) Sidney according to you, still alive in Chicago 1940, but would llike furtheer inf. Erastus 1867 -1886 Joe(Joseph) 1877- un-recorded, unknown Liddie(Lydia?), obvioously married a Jefferson, and alive in 1940. Need more inf. Obey ? 1882-1883 w/wife Helen: Karen 1886-1886 w/wife Christina: none. In order to get a broader knowledge of the sosial setting , I would appreciate to receive a link to good refeerance books, maps and/or general history of the district. A coupple of years ago, I did drive through the area from Chicago, via Ottawa to Norway anf Fox River. I visted Lisbon, and I did vist some of the small graveyards and Churches. I did not have the pressent knowledge of the the family and I was unable to get in contact with anyone who could guide me. I plan a new trip in a year or two, and I hope to be better prepared. Looking forward to any information which can add to the basic inf. above, and in return I shall send you all the earlier history from theeir Norwegian roots. By the way, Reiar, above, is my great-great grandfather, and the sisters caroline and Elisabeth are sisters of my great grandfather, Sivert. Svein

Grabbed LDS microfilm #1282876, it didn't contain the baptisms for 1865 as I'd intended but did have 1870 -- so born on 19 Dec 1870 and baptised on 1 Jan 1871 was a daughter, Kari. Parents were Niels Hansen and Britha Oldsdatter of Hamre farm. The handwriting in that parish book was a bit "shaky" and I only had a few minutes - so I didn't look further for baptismal sponsors/witnesses or other information. (Fjelberg kirkebok A8, page 42) The area (now called Ølen) was then part of Fjelberg and the baptisms of the earlier children will probably be listed in earlier church books. Your information would seem to indicate that Hamre farm connection may come from Brita's background/family and that perhaps Niels' family had earlier connections to the Stangeland farm. It would be my recommendation that you also check the Fjelberg parish books for a marriage between Niels and Brita - a marriage record listed the fathers for each the groom and bride. The death records are also contained in those books. Last time I checked there are only two of the Ølen bygdebøker (4 total are planned) have been published thus far, but the parish books are excellent!!. Enjoy!
