The dates were helpful. I was able to recognize Sarah Ostrem's brother (Ole) and some married Sorem relatives. There were 8 children in the Ostrem family. I don't know how many immigrated or if any of them settled in Grundy besides Sarah Ostrem married to Mons Sorem and sister, Kari Ostrem, married to Lars Ole Sorem. It will take me some time to sort that information out. I am going to check to see if I have any information on a Martin Sorem in my records, but the name is not familiar and he may just be from that area in Norway. There is one remaining son in the Sorem family that I am searching for. Niels Nielson Sorem, born 1833, age 33, emigrated to Morris with his wife Sarah (Siri Jacobsdatter), born 1826, age 40, and their three children, twins, Niels and Jacob, born 1858, age 7, and Brita, born 1860, age 5. They left from Bergen/Stavanger on June 1, 1866, one year prior to brothers Mons and Andrew and their families. I do not have their date or place of arrival but their departure was in the Digitalarkivet on the ship Leif. I do know that Mons and Andrew came by way of Quebec. My understanding is that Niels passed away shortly after arriving in Morris and his wife, Sarah, raised the family there. She and her sons moved to Kansas about 1879. Brita married Christian Jergensen Anderson, 19 Nov 1878 in Grundy, and I believe they also may have moved to Kansas with her mother and brothers in 1879. Do any of them appear in the History of Grundy County? Mons and Andrew did but it was in 1892 and Niels had been deceased for quite sometime. Since they left Illinois before 1880, they are not in the census and I have not found them in the Kansas census. I have no death, obituary or burial dates or information on Niels. As far as I know, he was the first Sorem to arrive in the US. His widow died in 1910 in Hodgeman County, Kansas. I would appreciate any information you might be able to add on Niels or his family. Thanks, Kay

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wg.2ADE/1643.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Kay, Andrew N. Sorem and Mons N. Sorem applied for citizenship 6 April 1875. Their final papers were signed 5 Nov. 1877 (all in Grundy Co, IL). The papers just said that they renounced the King of Norway & Sweden. There was no personal information. "Morris, Daily Herald", Morris, IL Wed, March 17, 1920 Mons N. Sorem, formerly of Grundy county, Illinois, died Feb. 29, 1920, at 12:15 o'clock, p.m., at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 17 days. Funeral services were held on Wednesday in Ransom church, Minnesota. Mr. Sorem was born in Etna, Norway, May 12, 1840. His parents were Nels and Bertha Sorem. He was married to Sarah Ostrem on May 6, 1864, and having been drafted for the Danish-German war, left home two days after the wedding for Christania where the soldiers remained in reserve for many months, but war was settled before they had to go farther. Mr. Sorem was a drummer in the regular army. They left Etna on April 23, 1867, for America, and with their two sons, Nels and Severt, came to Morris, Ill., on June 18, and his brother Andrew Sorem came at the same time. After twelve years they bought a farm near Morris, on which they lived until 1886 when they sold and came to Nobles county, Minnesota, and bought land, and where they have since resided, with the exception of three years. After having sold their farm near Bigelow they moved to Jewell, Iowa, where Mrs. Sorem had three brothers and a sister living. They were blessed with ten children, seven boys and three girls. One son, who died in infancy, was laid to rest in the Lisbon church cemetery. After having lived in Jewell three years, longing to go back to their children in Minnesota, they moved back to Bigelow in 1913, and built a home. There they resided until Mrs. Sorem died, July 29, 1916, being permitted to pass yonder to her heavenly home, which she long had sought, and thus Mr. Sorem being left alone, and also longing for his heavenly heritage and to be with his savior and dear ones, and where there is a home prepared for those that love their savior, Jesus. Mr. Sorem had been making his home with the children since his wife died, and at his death was with his youngest daughter, Carrie Eide, residing south of Rushmore. Nine children still survive and are left to mourn a loving father: Nels M. Sorem, Worthington, Minn., Severt M. Sorem, Story City, Ia.; Michael Sorem, Modesto, Cal., the only one who could not come to the funeral; Mrs. Isabel Stangeland, Lismore, Minn.; Ben and Ole, residing near Bigelow, Lewis Sorem and Mrs. Bessie Hokeness, Northfield, Minn. Besides the children, Mr. Sorem leaves to mourn his death 34 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the house on Wednesday afternoon with a short prayer service, after which they proceeded to the Ransom church, where funeral services were held. Interment was made in the Norwegian cemetery west of Ransom church. Relatives from out of town were: Oscar Ostrem, Jewell, Iowa, a brother of Mrs. Sorem; Mrs. Isabel Male and Mr. and Mrs. John Male of Garden City, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Anderson, of Morris, Ill.; Mrs. Iverson of Yorkville, Ill., and Nels A. Sorem, Morris, Ill. Rev. J. O. Mundal of Luvern, Minn., officiated at the funeral assisted by Rev. J. H. Hanson of Lake Mills, Iowa. Mr. Sorem was a loving father and a good neighbor and loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. No, I haven't heard of Lars Ole Sorem. In the Morris paper, I ran across a reference to Martin Nelson Sorem, aged 88, who died 4 March 1898. He came from Norway some 50 years ago & settled in Kendall Co. Stayed there a short time & then moved to Grundy. He was survived by his wife & her two children by a former marriage, Mrs. Gunnerson & Mrs. Skoegen. Funeral was held at the Lutheran church west of Lisbon, Kendall Co, IL. Lea

The stones for John C. (1797-1860)/Anna B.(1802-1855) and Leonard (1844-1898) are barely legible in some places. At Goodfarm I also found a stone for 2 children of J.H. and J.C. The info on Michael fills one of the gaps in my search. I was not aware that he had ten children, so that opens up some more doors. I have found a number of Sorem families in the Grundy county area and have wondered if they are all related in some fashion. My guess is that they are. The puzzle is trying to figure out how. Have you ever seen anything about a Lars Ole Sorem? He has been very elusive and came to the US later than the other three brothers. I did find him in a Ransom twp 1900 Census but haven't found anything else on him so far. He was born about 1838 in Norway. I don't have the obituary on Mons and would like to have it. It is possible Mons may have stayed with my father's family. My father was the son of Benjamin and was raised in the Ransom twp area in Minnesota. Ben had 12 children with Nellie Milton. My father was #3 of the twelve and they lived on a farm in the Worthington area until Ben retired in the 1930s. The reason I am interested in the naturalization is that Mons and Andrew immigrated as Nielsen. Mons from Ostreim and Andrew from Sorheim. They were shown at those locations in the 1865 Norway Census. In the 1880 Illinois Census they are shown as Mons Nelson and Andrew Nelson. I had been having a terrible time trying to find them in the Census and finally located them in the Digitalarkivet in the 1880 US Census of Norwegians in the US. I am curious to know when they adopted the last name of Sorem. They probably did it because there were so many Nelsons around and Sorem is different. It is logical since it was not uncommon for Norwegians to take the name of the farm from which they came. It could possibly show up in their naturalization papers. I really appreciate all of your assistance, Lea. Thanks, Kay

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wg.2ADE/1643.1 Message Board Post: Kay, The Spanish flu was around in 1918, and a tremendous number of people died. It was a flu/pneumonia combination. The three children of Michael Sorem all died in the Emergency Flu Hospital in Morris: Gladys age 11, Arnold, age 14 & Louis, age 19. They are buried in Evergreen Cem, Morris, IL. Apparently, the entire family had been in the hospital with the flu, but by Nov. 18, all had returned home except the above three and an unnamed sister. "Morris Daily Herald", Morris, IL Mon, Feb 21, 1955 Michael N. Sorem, 88, died Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in his home at 1024 Lisbon St. The body is at the Davis Funeral home where friends may call until time for services. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made to the Heart Fund. Services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday in the Davis chapel. The Rev. B. C. Qually wil officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Sorem was born in Saratoga township, Feb 3, 1877, a son of the late Andrew and Karie Sorem. He married Julia Thorson here on March 17, 1898 and they soon would have observed their 57th aniversary. Except for a few years spent farming they had resided in Morris. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Amanda) Leach, Mazon; Mrs. Joseph (Kathryn) Viano Channahon; Mrs. Julia Viano, Morris; four sons, Clifford, John and Michael Jr., all of Morris and Peter of Chico, Califl; 18 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and four great-grandsons. There are also four sisters, Mrs. Dan (Betsy) Iverson, Plattville; Mrs. John (Belle) Olson, Mrs. Andrew (Emma) Anderson and Mrs. Chris (Carrie) Johnson, all of Morris. He was preceded in death by a daughter Gladys, two sons, Louis and Arnold, a sister Mrs. Ed Anderson and two brothers, Nels and Andrew. Mons N. Sorem was buried in the Norwegian cemetery west of Ransom church in MN. Do you have his obituary? It is rather lengthy. I'll check next week at the Courthouse for a probate for him, but he left the area in 1886 when they sold their farm & went to MN. Stayed there except for 3 years when they lived in Jewell, Iowa (having sold the farm in MN). Returned to MN in 1913 where his wife died in 1916. He then lived with his children. After reading his obituary, I don't think that there will be a probate here or anywhere else. He sold his property as he moved. There might be naturalization, but it won't say anything except that he renounced the King of Norway and the date of naturalization. The newspaper says that the family left from Etna, Norway, on April 23, 1867, for America, & arrived in Morris on June 18, 1867. Brother Andrew came with them. Lea
