    1. [ILGRUNDY] German Newspaper 'Ostfriesische Nachrichten' - later 'Ostfriesen Zeitung'
    2. Boyken & Boyken Partners
    3. Dear Listmembers, The old German newspaper "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" was published by Pastor L. Hündling [Huendling} in 1882 in Iowa as a connecting paper between the people in the new American settlements and die old homeland with news and events in Ostfriesland and the "New World". Later you could find this newspaper all over the U.S. and Ostfriesland. For the period between 1882 and 1915 the issues were microfilmed around 20 - 30 years ago. According to a descendant of Pastor Huendling about 10 years ago, most of the issues between 1916 and 1971 got lost on the way to a processing center to be microfilmed. Besides Rev. Kenneth DeWall and others, who published in the past some indexes of (only) obituaries, we started in 1997 reading each newspaper for 1882 - 1915 and 1916 - 1971 (single issues) from the front to the back and taking all of the personal data in obituaries and local news into computer files. We added also interesting stories about the events in the New World - especially for the German readers -. So far we have listed 10,300 names of deceased between 1882 and 1915 plus 12,300 names of relatives, and until 1971 only 2,000 deceased / 5,000 relatives. Now we are looking for issues of this newspaper between 1916 and 1971. The undersigned would appreciate your answer if you have access to those issues. We have the microfilms from Crest Information Technologies and Heritage Crest, both in Cedar Rapids, IA. Most of the single issues after 1916 are scattered all over the U.S. and Germany. We guess, maybe finding them in the attics, etc. of old East Frisian settlements in the States. Thank you very much in advance for your help in preserving the data. Sincerely, Hans-Georg Boyken Ostfriesland-Society of Iowa, Inc.

    3. If you have any info on the Gallaghers, please reply to John Dougherty at the email below! Thanks! -----Original Message----- From: John Dougherty [mailto:dougher@infionline.net] Sent: Sunday, August 31, 2003 9:02 PM To: ILGRUNDY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: {not a subscriber} Gallaghers of Morris Ill I am searching for descendants of James and Ellen Dougherty Gallagher who lived in Morris from 1863 until approximately 1890. They had the following children; John, Robert, James Anthony,Frank, Mary, and possibly William. Most of the children were born in Ireland. Mrs. Ellen (Nellie) Gallagher died on 10 April 1886 and was buried in "the Old Catholic Cemetery". The funeral director was S.E. Massey. It appears the rest of the family moved on to Chicago soon afterwards. I would like to know if there were any other burials to the same plot that Nellie was laid to rest and their date. Or if the records to the Massey Funeral Home are still available. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for my search. Thank you, John Dougherty (Pennsylvania)

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wg.2ADE/1652 Message Board Post: Looking for information on John Ahern, born Ireland about 1838. Married Margaret Walsh born Ireland about 1842 on May 5, 1864 Immaculate Conception Church by circuit riding priest, M. Lyons. In 1870 John was saloon keeper in Dwight, IL. In 1880 farmer Grundy County, IL, Goodfarm Township. Children Philip b. 1865, Erminie, b. 1867 (married Frank L. Smith and lived/died Dwight, IL), John b. 1870, Stephen b. 1872, Helen b. 1878, Bertie b. abt 1879 (male, not sure of proper name), Clinton b. 1881 (lived/died Dwight, IL married Emma Romberger), Gertrude b.1880 (married Walter Bracken), and Archibald b. 1882. Ahern family moved from Goodfarm Twp. sometime between 1880 and 1890? Lived Joliet, IL. Moved to Ogden, Utah around 1892-93. Erminie married Frank L. Smith in 1893 and lived in Dwight, IL. Ahern family, except for father John and possibly son Philip, returned to IL abt. 1897. Most of the family, except for father John and son John buried Mt. Olivet Cemetery near Dwight, IL. Smith's are buried Oak Lawn Cemetery near Dwight, IL. Don't know what happened to Helen. I believe John Ahern, Sr. may have been related to Matthew Ahern, who married Adaline Pitcher. He and Margaret Walsh Ahern were witnesses at their marriage and also sponsors to their son born about Nov. 4, 1872. Where would I find information about Ahern burials in Goodfarm Cemetery or other cemeteries in the area, probably Catholic cemeteries, and Grundy Co. private land sales for the Goodfarm Twp. farm?

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wg.2ADE/1648.1 Message Board Post: Barbara, "Morris Reformer", Morris, IL, Thurs. Oct 17, 1878. Mrs. Elizabeth A'Hern died in this city on Tuesday, aged 85 years. She was the mother of Matt A'Hern. Elizabeth is probably buried in Mt. Carmel Cem, Morris, IL, but there is no stone. James A'Hern owned lot 1 in section 9 in Mt. Carmel. The cemetery does not list any burials on the lot. Elizabeth A'Hern had sons James, Timothy, John, Matthew, Garret. Circuit Court Record of Grundy Co, Bk H, p. 62 dated 20 Nov 1871 Bill for Divorce Adaline A'Hern is now living with her said husband Mathew A'Hern as his wife--she no longer wishes to prosecute. Adaline was the daughter of Heber & Keziah Pitcher. She was born about 1852 in Ohio. She married Matthew A'Hern 17 Nov 1870 in Grundy County, IL "Morris Reformer", 5 Oct 1876, p. 5, col 1. A little centennial at Mat Ahern's last week. It's a boy. "Morris Herald", Apr 13, 1877 Depraved.--We are no longer a doubter on the subject of total depravity. Morris affords an example which will remove from the mind of every enquirer all doubt on this subject. The person to whom we alude in this article is Mathew Ahern. At the recent term of the Circuit Court the Grand Jury returned four counts against this individual charging him with having sold liquor on the Sabbath day. He plead guilty and was fined by the court $50 in each of the several counts, and in default was sent to jail until fine and costs were paid. The law of the state provides that, "whenever it shall be made satisfactorily to appear to the court, after all legal means have been exhausted, that any person who is confined in jail for any fine or costs of prosecution for any criminal offense, hath no estate wherewith to pay such fine and costs or costs only, it shall be the duty of the said court to discharge such person from further imprisionment for such fine and costs, which discharge shall ! operate as a complete release of such fine and costs." Under this clause many offenders of the law are set at liberty and justice to all intents and purposes is robbed of her reward. Under this clause Ahern was given his freedom. And here commences a tale of horror. For a long time Ahern's wife has been a victim of consumption. Her husband, who had first escaped from the clutches of the law, goes to his home, after imbibing frequently on the way, and charges her with his many misfortunes and commences an attack upon her, pulling her out of bed, beating her over the head, and otherwise maltreating her. She, as soon as possible, notifies the authorities, and Police Magistrate McBride, visited the scene, when Mrs. Ahern made affidavit to the extent that she had been most shamefully abused, and that she stood in fear of her husband lest he should carry out his threats to kill her. Ahern was arrested and brought before the court, where, after examination, Justice McBride committe! d him to jail in default of bonds to the amount of $1,000 to keep the peace for the term of one year. To this penalty there is no leniency clause, and there is but little doubt but that Ahern will stand committed for the full term of one year. "Morris Herald", Fri, Jan 11, 1878 About half past seven o'clock on last Sabbath evening fire was discovered in a building on Canal street, occupied by Matt A'Hern, as a saloon. The fire department was promptly on hand and the building completely drenched with water. The fire seemingly was in an old bed in the second story of the building, no great damage was done to the building other than by the great amount of water thrown upon it. Matt had been badly "off" all day, and no doubt accidentally set fire to the bed. At the time the alarm was sounded a large number of our citizens were at the M. E. Church, attending the union service of the commencement of the week of prayer. The Rev. Marshall at the time was engaged in prayer but the men in the house, at the first stroke of the bell, stopped not to consider the order of their going, but went at once to the scene of the impending conflagration. Morris Herald", Jan 18, 1878 The application of Matthew A'Hern, for license, was laid upon the table. (City Council Meeting of Jan 14). "Morris Herald", June 22, 1888 Matt A'Hern who left here about nine years ago, spent Sunday in Morris. Matt. is now doing business at Miller, Dak. He with his brothers are settling up his brother, James' estate, who died in Chicago, two months ago. There is no gravestone for Adaline Pitcher in Grundy Co. Lea

    3. Hi Barry- I believe the hours for the library are: Monday- Thursday: 9 a.m.- 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and they are closed on Sundays I do not think that there are any hotels or motels in Coal City. There are some in towns that are within 10-15 miles. Morris is about 10-15 miles away. They have a Super 8 (Ph.# 815-942-3200), Holiday Inn ( Int. of Rt. 47 & Interstate 80, Ph. # 815-942-6600), Comfort Inn (Ph. # 815-942-1433), Best Western Inn (Ph.# 815-942-9000). I tried to email to you but I got an error message. Send a private email to me and we can talk more about this. Thanks so much for making this connection for me :) Still lots of unknowns about Barney and Mary Perona. I have a copy of their marriage license which gives his parent's names as well as hers. I have a copy of the biography for Charles Valerio, the brother of Ignazio and Maria Valeriano. This is from "The History of Grundy County". It tells a little about the family like that they came here from Italy in 1880. I also have death index listings and other info for various surnames in Grundy and Will counties - Valerio, Perona, Gomora, Probate info, Marriage info, Listings of obits in the Coal City Courant. If you live in the area you could probably find tons more than I could at the local libraries. There is also a bio for a Gomora that I have a copy of. And my great aunt, Catherine Valerio Kozuh Younger scribbled some notes - some about Barney and Mary Perona and their large family. Some funny things are that I've misinterpreted some of the notes. For instance one of the famil! y married a girl whose last name was Beebar and who I guess lived in Joliet. I read Aunt Catherine's notes as saying that he married "Bee, a bar girl from Joliet" thinking she was saying that she worked in a bar! lol Barry Jernigan Murfreesboro, TN
