    1. [ILGRUNDY-L] Cemetery Records
    2. Greetings Grundy Genealogists!!! Upon checking cemetery listings at the Morris Public Library, it appears as if all of the cemeteries have been transcribed and are on file at the library. If you would like for me to look up your ancestors, please send me an email and I will check the listings as soon as I can. I also have maps to the cemeteries if anyone is interested. If you need lookups at the Morris or area libraries, please email me. I can try to assist everyone as much as I can on weekends. Due to my work schedule, I am unable to make it to the Grundy County Courthouse for lookups there since they are closed when I start and finish work. If you have anything to submit for Grundy County, please send it to me. I have copied quite a bit of info to post online. It will be posted as soon as I can get it transcribed. Have a great week everyone!!! Deb Grundy County Coordinator

    3. Claude, Thanks for the Wheeler Cemetery information. It was Julius Wheeler who m. Ada Marina Rogers that is in my Rogers research. He was abut the same age as George Edwin Wheeler so it my be a brother. Joseph could be the father. I will keep the information with my Rogers research. Perhaps it will be more meaningful as I learn more about this family. Thanks again, Dorothy At 06:45 PM 10/15/98 PDT, you wrote: >Dorothy: I'm back from the Wheeler Cemetary. 1. Re: [ILGRUNDY-L] Italian Coal Miners in Grundy Co., IL
    2. Alan, There was a booklet at the Morris Library giving a bit of history regarding the Italian Cemetery. I briefly scanned it so I do not know if there was any reference to Italian coal miners. I do have a listing of the Italians buried in this cemetery. Please let me know if you would like a lookup. I have noticed many Italians buried in the cemeteries that I have visited. Which surnames are you researching? I will check that book again to see if there is any info on Italian coal miners. 3. My grandfather, George Edward Surtees, and his wife, Priscilla L. Old Surtees, came to America from England in 1852, settled in Brooklyn, NY, and came to Gardner in Grundy County in 1858, where they set up a saddlery business. George enlisted in Company "E" 88th Illinois Volunteers (Infantry), known as the Board of Trade Regiment August 2, 1862. I have no idea why George enlisted in the 88th when there apparently a volunteer company from Gardner. A higher enlistment bonus perhaps? I have forwarded excerpts from his letters to the Illinois Civil War Page where they are now posted. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/scrapbk/scrapbk.htm He mentions comrades named HOGBIN, ANDREWS, CROOKS, HARDY and a Mr. Crooks. Some or all of these may also have been from Gardner. George died February 20, 1864, of wounds received in the Battle of Missionary Ridge. George's widow continued to live in Gardner for some time and moved to a farm between Gardner and Kankakee in 1876. She married a tailor named Prince in 1865, but they lived together only a short time. She married Orville Shaw in 1867 and he was later crushed to death in a mine cave-in. She moved to Kansas in 1880 and never again married. I am interested in knowing if there are extant records in Grundy County of divorces, which might shed light on how her marriage to Mr. Prince was terminated, if indeed it was. Also of interest to me would be any records, which would show the death and place of burial of Orville Shaw. THOMAS JACOB BROWN

    3. Claude, The families you are researching are not among those I have researched. The name WHEELER Cemetery was very interesting though, as well as the locations mentioned, Gardner, Braceville, and Mazon. Could the WHEELER Cemetery be a family cemetery? In researching my ROGERS family in Grundy County, I find that Ida Morina ROGERS, dau. of Shubael M. ROGERS and Bertha "Lucy" POWERS m. Julius H. WHEELER on 22 Dec 1874 in Grundy Co. They had daughters Lucy Ann b. 1883 and Ida May b. 1886 at Gardner. Shubael M. ROGERS and wife Lucy are both buried in the Gardner/Braceville cemetery. If, in your search of the Wheeler cemetery, you find information on the Wheeler or the Rogers Family, I would appreciate knowing. If you have Rogers connections, I have further information. Dorothy

My information from Biographical and Gen. Record of La. and Grundy County, Volume, II 1900 says Elwood Coles was living in Greenfield township. His sister, Jessie Clover was living in Morris, and his brothers Herbert M. and Nathan E. were both living in Morris. I think their father John Coles was a rather prominent settler of Gardener. He was a Justice of the Peace, on the School Board, I think he came in 1857... and was a shoemaker. John had two wifes, the first was Mary Elizabeth Hart who was the mother of five children... she died in 1861. He then married Martha J. Sutton Dunmore (a widow) and they had four more children. Elwood was the oldest of the latter four and he died in 1905 or 1906. One of Elwood's sisters married a Edward L. Clover. I 1870 Federal census has the VandeBogert's living in Braceville Township. I just found a letter I received from Jane Cambell, Will-Grundy Genealogical Society... in 1993. She says according to the Morris Library's Cemetery File, the following are buried in Wheeler: John H. Coles Mary Elizabeth Coles Martha J. Coles Elwood Coles The Same file lists the following in Braceville-Gardner... (is this a different cemetary? Mathew E. Van de Bogert, Jan 26, 1826 - Dec. 1893 Viola Van de Bogert died Oct 22, 1878, aged 21 years Van de Bogert Aged 20 yrs. 3 mo. Let me know again, if these are two separate cemetaries... and if you know if there is a way we can know where these people lived. Thanks, Claude

    3. See the ISGS list at http://www.tbox.com/isgs/ilcemetery-al/grundy.html GNIS has a shorter list of cemeteries, but it has the advantage of having maps. Go to http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html then leave the feature name field blank and fill in Grundy for county, IL for state, and cemetery for feature types. When you execute the query, a list will be returned of Grundy county cemeteries, with links to maps. I remember seeing a folder at Morris Library with hand drawn maps showing the locations of cemeteries. It was a while ago so I don't recall how complete it was, but I remember thinking it was a well done project. Hope this helps. 1. [ILGRUNDY-L] Re: Wheeler Cemetary & Plat Map for Grundy
    2. Hi Claude, So you are going to spend the day in Grundy. Good for you and your wife!! I live in Will County so I am just next door. Regarding the Wheeler Cemetery: Unless there are two Wheeler Cemeteries and there very well might be, it is located in Mazon. I will send you directions after I consult with my driver (my husband) since I wasn't paying attention to where we were going at the time. If anyone knows of another Wheeler Cemetery besides the one in Mazon, please let us know. I am trying to find all Grundy County cemeteries since I cannot find a list. We have scoured quite a bit of the countryside so far, but have quite a bit more to go on our search for cemeteries. I found a book at the Morris Library of plat maps for Grundy County. There is no date on these maps, but they are divided by Township and the owners of the property are listed in each section. Since I do not have a date, I cannot post these maps on the web until I can confirm they are no longer copyrighted. They were published by W. W. Hixson & Co., Rockford, IL. These maps are absolutely wonderful if you are trying to find the exact location of your ancestors. I did look for Coles, Sutton & Vandebogert, but I couldn't find them. I looked in the Garfield Township are which covers Gardner. This map may have been published before or after they were there or they may have been in a different area. If anyone wants a lookup on the plat map, please email me. I hope your trip to Grundy is filled with finding many exciting things out about your family. If you get a chance, stop in at the Morris Library. They have many family books in addition to file cabinets filled with all kinds of articles and a microfilm section. 1. [ILGRUNDY-L] Wheeler Cemetary
    2. Claude A. Hanson
    3. Greetings: My wife and I are going to be in Grundy County on October 2nd. Her mother was born in Gardner, the daughter of Elwood Coles and Laney VandeBogert. Elwood was the son of John Coles and Martha Sutton and Laney Alice VandeBogert was the daughter of Matthew VandeBogert and Anna Welch. I think Elwood, John, Martha, Matthew and Anna are all buried in the Wheeler cemetary. Is the Wheeler cemetary the resting place for most Gardener and Braceville residents? I also need to know how to get to the cemetary and if there is an office that has burial records and the location of graves. It would also be great if we could locate any old maps of the area in about the 1880 vintage that shows exactly where residents lived. Does such a map exist... and if so, where could I see one when I get there. I would also like to communicate with anyone who is researching the Coles, Vandebogert, or Sutton families in Grundy County. Thanks. Look forward to hearing from someone. We just have the day of Friday to spend in the county and want to make to make it a great day, genealogically speaking! Thanks, Claude Hanson ------------------------------------- Name: Claude A. 1. [ILGRUNDY-L] OUR CAHILL SEARCH
    2. Roger Cahill
    3. We are looking for links; siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins who relate to our CAHILLS. The following is what we know. JAMES (or could be Patrick) CAHILL was born in IRELAND and married JOHANNA (WALSH?) in Ireland. They had at LEAST two children, WILLIAM and MICHAEL. William was born May 1, 1838 in CO. CLARE(?), IR. Michael was born 1845 in Ireland. We know that William immigrated to America in 1848, Johanna and Michael probably came at the same time, but we are not sure if James ever did get to the States. We do not know where they entered. Or where they were, 1848-1855. William arrived in ILLINOIS in 1855 (age 17) and spent the rest of his life in IL. He married ELLEN QUINN, April 30, 1862 at St. Patrick's Church in LASALLE, LaSalle Co., IL. They had 3 children; MICHAEL, MARY, MARGARET (married a BRADY and a COOK) all born in LaSalle: and 4 children born in NEVADA Township, LIVINGSTON Co., IL; JOHN, WILLIAM, JAMES and ELLEN "Nellie" (married HANLEY). William died Dec. 31, 1910, Nevada Township, buried at St. Paul's Cemetery, Odell, Livingston Co., IL Michael (William's brother) married MARY E (?) and they had at LEAST two children; JAMES born 1878, IL and MARY born June 20, 1879, IL. Mary died at a very early age and is buried at St. Paul's Cemetery, Odell, IL. We cannot locate William in 1860 or 1870 Federal Census, but he and his family are found in the 1880 Census and thereafter in Nevada Township with his family and many of his descendants are in that area yet today. Michael, his mother Johanna, his family are found in the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census in HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP, GRUNDY CO, IL. Cannot locate them in the 1860 Census. We also can't locate Michael, Johanna (mother) or James (son) after he sold his land in Highland Township in 1892. We have checked cemeteries, death records, obituaries to no avail. We would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might relate to any of the above given names, locations, dates of our Cahill's. Thanks for listening.

    1. [ILGRUNDY-L] New Postings on Grundy County IL
    2. If you haven't visited the Grundy County website in the last week or so, here are the latest additions: 1907 Minooka Fire Department Names - If you are ever in Grundy County, visit the Three Rivers Library in Minooka. The historical room that Michele Houchins maintains is in the basement of the library. You will find a picture on display of the 1907 Minooka Fire Department among many other things. Grundy Farmers C-G Phoenix Advertiser featuring Minooka News which contains many surnames including some births, marriages, deaths, area news. (portions of 1903 and 1906 are posted on Grundy) Coming soon: I purchased a bunch of old photos from an antique store a couple of weeks. Some of these photos are identified, but most are not. I will be posting these to the Lost & Found section of Grundy County as soon as I can get them online. I spent yesterday scanning them and reducing them using a jgp reduction program to save bandwidth and load time, but some of them are still very large files. Michele from Three Rivers Library in Minooka has supplied me with a ton of info that I am still working on. I still have a gigantic stack of Phoenix Advertiser "Minooka News" to type since it will not scan. Some of the copies are very bad. My family and I have spent a few weekends driving around Grundy County mostly to familiarize myself with the area and to learn more about it. We have stopped at nearly every cemetery that we have passed. I have taken 12 rolls of pictures mostly of older headstones that I have found at these cemeteries. As I get time, I will post the info from the headstone to a page for individual cemetery listings. Some of the cemeteries in Grundy County have not been recorded. Gather up your cemetery information and submit it to me and I will post it to the website. Perhaps we can come up with as accurate of a listing for each of the cemeteries as possible. Please keep in mind that many of the older headstones have been destroyed by either age, weather, or vandalism and that info may no longer exist except in your family notes. I need your help!!! Submit your info to me and let's get it posted online. I am looking for any public domain material such as, birth, marriage, death, census, records, early settlers of Grundy County bios. Basically any Grundy County info that you might think would be helpful to others as long as it does not hold a copyright. I will be working on material mainly on weekends for the website due to my working full time during the week. If you send me email during the week, chances are that it will not be answered until the weekend. If anyone currently lives in Grundy County, please contact me. Have a great Labor Day!! Deb
