I believe Illinois has now suspended the free death certificates due to lack of resources and huge demand. That's why the $10 fee for the genealogical non-certified ones. Somewhere I just read that for the before-1916 ones at the county courthouse, you can search yourself, but the clerks no longer have time to do searches for you.
