That's really nice. I don't know where to go to find out what happened between April 16, 1861 and June of 1865. He is shown as enlisting in Edwardsville--isn't that sort of funny?--and mustered out April 29, 1861 with about 65 other men--all with the same in/out dates. They'd lived in White Hall pretty much from the time father Joel and wife came to Greene early on. Joel was a path master a couple of times. Son Jacob was 46 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company B. (I have the regiment, but don't want to stop typing to run and look). The service was for 3 mo. duration which was done on a few Illinois regiments. They were to guard prisoners and handle supplies, etc. They didn't even do 3 months. By 1870, widow Nancy had moved to Palmyra in Macoupin County. I can't figure out why or who she knew to have brought that about. She and all children are there in June, except eldest daughter, Martha who married in April and is not counted in the Palmyra enumeration. Martha is my husband's grandmother, and the eldest of the Bacon children. Nancy's sister Acenith Chipman married Allen Lovelace in Greene County and later moved to Texas with her parents Seth and Sarah Chipman. Another sister, Elizabeth Chipman married William Bradshaw in Greene County, had a daughter (Nonie) and died after that. William went on to marry a couple more times and is written up in county history. Is there an index of Greene County cemeteries (Whitehall in particular) available on line? I have to think if he died after being mustered out, he must be buried in or around Whitehall, but I can't explain why every one of the enlistments gives Jacksonville as the residence. Gordon and Nancy's last child was born in 1862. His date of death and location is the only piece of information I need on this couple and it is frustrating. The only thing I haven't tried is court records of divorce. But since all the enlistees were given the same residence, I figured that's the location for the enlistments, not the real home address--and besides, there was this late birth. It's helpful to bounce some of these puzzles off someone else. Thanks. Jan
