This should give you information for ordering records. http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.html There is also an Illinois site that should give you regiment if you don't know it. I go into YAHOO, then GENEALOGY, then MILITARY. It takes so doing, but it's in there. Then on the other hand you can go into the Archives for your state and most states have data on military pension applications. Your local library most likely has some military records in their genealogy section. Hope it helps.
