    2. If you are looking at marriages in the 1930s, the experience of my parents in 1933 may be that of many. They got married across the river in Missouri because they wanted to keep it quiet. Reason: my mother would have been fired from her job if she was known to be married -- even though my father was suffering from a terminal illness at the time. Their wedding was announced a year later in the local paper - with the notation "These are two fine, upstanding young people." Carol Adams
