    1. [ILGREENE] obit of Anna HAFFNER
    2. This was posted on ILTraces-L@rootsweb.com - to post IL obits, etc., on when you don't know the county or are looking for info. While doing volunteer data entry for the Whittier Area Genealogical Society newspaper database I came across this obituary which might be of some interest to someone on this list. This does not relate to any surname that I am researching personally. Nancy Anna Haffner, Mother Of City Controller, Dies Mrs. Anna Haffner of 521 S. Washington Ave., mother of Whittier City Controller Carrol H. Haffner, died Monday (14 Oct) in a nursing home following an illness of several months. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Siewert-Barbert Memory Chapel. Mrs. Haffner came to Whittier from Denver, Colo., in 1924 with her husband, Edwin G. Haffner. He died in 1948. Mrs. Haffner was born May 16, 1871 in Greene County, Ill., the youngest of eight children. The family moved to Iowa where she was educated, and she taught in Iowa country schools. In 1894 she was married to E. G. Haffner, who had a grain mill and elevator in Iowa. Later, he became a Kansas stock rancher, and from Kansas the family moved to Denver. Mr and Mrs. Haffner came to Whittier to be near their son. Their only daughter, Margaret, died as a young woman. Mrs. Haffner was a member and past president of Whittier chapter, American War Mothers; was a member of Whittier Women's Relief Corps, Plymouth Congregational Church, and Royal Neighbors of America. Until her health failed her she worked to aid disabled war veterans and spent countless hours knitting, sewing and baking for hospitalized veterans. She is survived by her son here; one sister, Mrs. Emma C. Gary, 93, of Whittier; two grandchildren, Mrs. Ruth M. Kamerer of Long Beach and Mrs. Helen Gossar of Brea; and four great grandchildren.
