I go into YAHOO, then GENEALOGY, then MILITARY. It takes so doing, but it's in there. Then on the other hand you can go into the Archives for your state and most states have data on military pension applications. Your local library most likely has some military records in their genealogy section. Hope it helps. It has been my experence that Greene county clerk will provide you with a certified paper stating what the actual records shows but will not provide you a copy of the actual record. Have you tried the library in White Hall?. they have a great card index and newspapers on microfiche. The newspaper microfiche can be borrowed from Springfield to your local library.
