    1. [ILGREENE] obit of Anna HAFFNER
    2. This was posted on ILTraces-L@rootsweb.com - to post IL obits, etc., on when you don't know the county or are looking for info. While doing volunteer data entry for the Whittier Area Genealogical Society newspaper database I came across this obituary which might be of some interest to someone on this list. This does not relate to any surname that I am researching personally. Nancy Anna Haffner, Mother Of City Controller, Dies Mrs. Anna Haffner of 521 S. Washington Ave., mother of Whittier City Controller Carrol H. Haffner, died Monday (14 Oct) in a nursing home following an illness of several months. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Siewert-Barbert Memory Chapel. Mrs. Haffner came to Whittier from Denver, Colo., in 1924 with her husband, Edwin G. Haffner. He died in 1948. Mrs. Haffner was born May 16, 1871 in Greene County, Ill., the youngest of eight children. The family moved to Iowa where she was educated, and she taught in Iowa country schools. In 1894 she was married to E. G. Haffner, who had a grain mill and elevator in Iowa. Later, he became a Kansas stock rancher, and from Kansas the family moved to Denver. Mr and Mrs. Haffner came to Whittier to be near their son. Their only daughter, Margaret, died as a young woman. Mrs. Haffner was a member and past president of Whittier chapter, American War Mothers; was a member of Whittier Women's Relief Corps, Plymouth Congregational Church, and Royal Neighbors of America. Until her health failed her she worked to aid disabled war veterans and spent countless hours knitting, sewing and baking for hospitalized veterans. She is survived by her son here; one sister, Mrs. Emma C. Gary, 93, of Whittier; two grandchildren, Mrs. Ruth M. Kamerer of Long Beach and Mrs. Helen Gossar of Brea; and four great grandchildren. 1. [ILGREENE] Greene County families-Turney, Fry, English, Hay
    2. We are new to the list as of today. We have several families which spent considerable time in Greene County. James TURNEY, attorney general of ILL and famous lawyer was in Greene co. from 1820-off and on until 1850 when he moved to Texas. His wife is name unknown and we're hoping someone might be able to help us figure it out. My 3rd great-grandfather James TURNEY was born about 1789 in Smith Co., TN Peter TURNEY and Francis Haynes/Haines. This family was very prominent in politics in TN. James left TN and came to the settlements in ILL in 1819-1820. He is listed as an attorney in early records in several counties in the 1820's including Washington co., Randolph Co., Sangamon co., and Greene co. and Schuyler Co. In 1830 he is listed with his wife (unknown name) living in Greene co. He is also described as a famous lawyer in chicago the next year. He was in the Black Hawk and Sax and Fox wars. I have all of his legislative record, and he served as Attorney General of ILL. 1823-1828 among other offices. Unfortunately none of his public record entries mention his wife. Here are the marriages of his daughters= Emily married to Jacob Fry May 25, 1826 in Greene co., Illinois Vol. 1 page 6 lic.#170. -Emily's daughter Sarah married Theodore Hay. English, Lindsey married to Turney, Anabell in Greene co., Ill 12/12/1828 vol 1, page 10 lic. # 300. Fry, William Douglas to Turney, Elizabeth Sarah in Will co. 11/06/1839 lic. #218 1838-attends CHICAGO political meeting May 26, 1838 page 2:3, appointed Reg. Galena Land Office, November 10, 2:3. =He declines!DEED-2 April 1838-James Turney county of GREENE, to Henry Belcher, county of Will-for lot #3 in city of Lockport, Will co. for $400-James sold to Henry. But he still holds other land there and family members live there. 1836-39-state senator from Greene county Ill.-Dec. 5, 1836-July 22, 1837, Dec 1838-Feb. 3, 1840. We need to learn of any records about James Turney with regards to his family and his death. Might anyone have access to any Carrollton/Greene Co. newspapers for about 1864? Or marriage announcements for the daughters or know if there were applications filed at that time for marriages? Or obit for Emily Turney Fry 11 April 1881 died in Carrollton Arabella Turney English died 8 March 1866 in Carrollton Mrs. Turney (Sarah) died 17 Aug. 1837? We don't know anything about youngest daughter Elizabeth Turney Fry and what happened to her. If anyone can help with this family please write at Skysilver2000@charter.net Thanks, Karen

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Frank & Carolynn Bettis To: morganhistory@themyers.org Cc: saleguas@motion.net Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 5:02 PM Subject: Fw: HB 498 - SOS charging research fees Is there any way that you can get this out to as many County Coordinators as possible and get the folks out there to oppose Hannig's below outlined bill? Would appreciate any help you can afford. I've phoned both Hannig & Demuzio's offices and expressed my opposition. Please let me know if you concur with my feelings and if there is anyway this can go to all County Coordinators? Send it out over my name. This is a shame that Rep. Gary Hannig is doing this when Macoupin County has such an active Historical and Genealogical Societies, not to mention all of the other societies, researchers, etc. across Illinois. Thanks so much. Rep Gary Hannig has filed the following bill. The Secretary of State's Legislative Liaision, David Jones, is aware of the bill, but they were not involved in its creation. The bill will probably be heard in committee on Feb. 20th. HB 498 Amends the Secretary of State Act . Provides that a fee of $7 per research request for copies of non-certified death certificates, civil war muster records and census records shall be paid to the Secretary of State and deposited into the Archives Research Fund. Amends the State Finance Act. Creates the Archives Research Fund and provides that monies deposited ito the fund may, subject to appropriation, be used by the Secretary of State for expenses of conducting archival research of Archive records. Effective July 1, 2003. Urge all in opposition to HB 498 to conctact Representative Gary Hannig by phone or mail at: 225 S. Macoupin St, Gillespie, IL 62033, Tel. # 217-839-2859 or 300 Capitol Bldg., Springfield, IL 62706, Tel. No. 217-782-8071 also contact: Senator Vince Demuzio, 140 Carlinville Plaza, Carlinville, IL 62626, Tel. No. 217-854-4441 Have not been able to acquire an email address for Rep. Hannig and Sen. Demuzio does not have one. Strongly urge all those in opposition to this HB 498 also contact their local Representative(s) and Senator(s) making their feelings known. Perhaps if this HB 498 moves thru the legislative system, we can form a group and personally appear and offer testimony in opposition. This bill can be tracked at the Illinois Legislative Reference Bureau's web site: www.legis.state.il.us

    1. [ILGREENE] Re: ILGREENE-D Digest V03 #24
    2. Please, is it possible that someone could send me a xerox copy of the page containing all the Crouch burials (especially James H. Crouch) and a xerox copy of the title page and verso page of the title page. This would be considered proof of burial by the DAR, I think. I will be glad to pay mailing cost and xeroxing cost, listing the burials in Hermitage Cemetery, Rubicon Township, Greene County, Illinois. Thank you very much. (AAnninelli@aol.com) Please contact me for "snail" address. Ann Marie

    3. Shirley, I'm Kathy from Clinton Co. Ill. Sorry for the returning your own msg but it's the only way I know to send you a msg. I'm not very good at this computer stuff yet. I tried to send you a msg the other day but I think I failed. So will try again. Just wanted to say how much I appreciate the work you and your team on doing on the Greene and Scott county sites. Your sites are hands above any I have found in Ill, Mo, Ark, Tenn and Miss. Believe me I've been through most of them looking for my JOHN ROSE and MARTHA J. BURRIS. I haven't found anything on the sites but they are so informative and easy for people like me with only basic computer skills. You and the others helping you are providing a great service and your efforts show that you care about Ill genealogy information. Thanks agian for all your efforts. The rental for the rolls cost (or did the last time I ordered), $1.00. They must be kept at your local library, but they can stay there a month. You do not have to be an Illinois resident to order. 1. [ILGREENE] Corrections to Greene Co IL Death Notices
    2. In a message dated 02/04/2003 5:42:14 PM Eastern Standard Time, dgirth@yahoo.com writes: << If someone finds a listing that is somewhat incomplete or incorrect, do you want to know about it so that it can be amended to help others who might be looking for the individual and/or family? >> Answer is Yes, yes, yes. Any corrections will go in the notes section unless it's a typo on the part of the transcriptionist. For instance, Debbi knew the full name, b.d. and death date of someone listed only as "Infant Osborn". This will come in handy should anyone need to look up death cert. numbers, for instance. Does anyone want the death notices to be listed by date, also, instead of alphabetically? If there's a need I'll post an alternate list. Notice that in the early 1950's there were several soldiers listed as "killed in action" in Korea. I'm sure that when we post the 1940's deaths that there will be some from WWII also. As we honor the crew of the Columbia this week, take time to honor others who have died in the service of our country.
