Here are the latest addresses for a few of the cemeteries in Greene and Jersey County. As you are well aware of, great budget cuts are going on every where now. It is no different for the folks caring for our cemeteries. They are really needing help this year. Jalappa Cemetery (Greene County) C/O Darrell Talley 208 Maple Carrollton, IL 62016 Rosedale Cemetery Board (Jersey County) C/O Esther Kanallakan RR 1 Box 167C Grafton, IL 62037 (This cares for all the Meadow Branch was well) Lax Cemetery (Jersey County) 205 Goodrich St. Jerseyville, IL 62052 Filedon Cemetery Board (Jersey County) P. O. Box 10 Fieldon, IL 62031 Please don't write or call these folks asking them to do lookups. There are books published and the proceeds going to the cemeteries. They need money to care for your relatives graves, not questions. I'll get more later. Thanks Marty
GREENE County, Illinois 1827-1830 Benjamin HUFFMAN Benjamin HUFFMAN, b. c1763, Culpeper Co., VA left VA c1804 and went to Fayette Co., KY and later to Hardin Co., KY. By 1828 he was found on the tax rolls of Greene Co., IL and again in the USC 1830 IL, Greene Co. Apparently his wife, Peggy, died in KY and Benjamin came to IL with most of his children among whom were-- William Riley HUFFMAN m. 1817 KY Margaret GOFORTH Lucinda HUFFMAN m. 1834 KY Mark FLOYD Mary HUFFMAN m. 1828 KY Robert FLOYD Jacob HUFFMAN m. Katherine TERRY Rebecca HUFFMAN m. 1839 IL Benjamin G. THOMPKINS Mariah HUFFMAN m. 1840 IL John GOAR Nathan HUFFMAN m. 1840 IL Catherine Ann GOAR James HUFFMAN m. 1827 IL Lucinda BORUFF John HUFFMAN m. 1833 IL Parmelia B. BOYLES Purlina HUFFMAN m.1832 IL Joshua O. CLARK [she is shown as DUFFMAN which is in error] Nancy HUFFMAN m. 1840 IL Levi HEIGHTON There is no evidence of Benjamin HUFFMAN after USC 1830 though a number of his children married and remained in the area well after then. I am looking for the place and date of death of Benjamin HUFFMAN. I need places to research. Best regards, Hugh
There won't be death records in the county that far back. I would suggest you try probate. See if the county clerk has a probate box for him. That's how I narrowed down death dates for some of my early Greene Co. ancestors, and it would give you a wealth of other info too. There are Greene Co. probate books on LDS microfilm, but if possible go look in the actual box; there would be more there. On the contrary, I have found probate records most helpful. When land was divided among heirs, ALL the heirs (usually spouse and children and, sometimes, heirs of dead children) were listed, and usually in birth order. This is particularly helpful for pre-1850 families--i.e., before the census listed household members by name. When there were guardianship issues, again names appeared--the minor children and the guardians. Sons-in-law often signed for their wives, confirming marriage records. Too, when heirs signed off their agreement to the settlement of the estate, they told where they were at that time, often a different place from where the decedent died. The disposal of personal property, usually at a sale, can be helpful as well: Family members and near neighbors usually purchased everything from farm animals to pots and pans. One can get a sense of the family's relative worth not by the assessed value and prices paid but rather by the kind and quality of items sold. Don't by-pass this valuable resource!
For those of you who may NOT be too familiar with Probate records, please understand that they are mostly 85 to 95 percent inventory, sale and receipts of those items. Most are not too helpful with exact genealogy. Most probate records are also done WITHOUT a WILL. Lastly, a probate record may say, there are 3 pages or 4, but there could be as many as 15 to 30 individual pages of 8 1/2 by 11 pages. You must know this when you order them and the record says 3 pages but your bill from the court house comes back saying you owe for copies. Thanks Marty
I have a photo of 4 ladies and 1 young girl that was taken by T S Innis of = =3D Belleflower, IL. and developed by B S Boone in Paxton, IL. The names on the back are not real clear, except for last names. The names look like Lou and Mina Spear, Libie Summer, Fan Mitchel(young = =3D girl), and Mrs. J. E. Mitchell. If anyone is interested in seeing this photo, please e-mail me and I will = =3D send a scan of it. Donnie
Marty, I, too, would like a copy of the Funeral Book Index, if possible. russcap@aol.com. Thank you. Zelma
And if it's not too much trouble, Marty, please send me a copy of the cemetery book as well. Thank you!
Folks the only cemetery books for Greene County, that I am aware of are at the Greene County Historical Society. I do not have any to give away. The only thing that I have offered is on the Tri County site is an index to the Simpson Funeral Home Records. One index. Each book/volume is 300 pages and I cannot give away 300 pages to everyone who wants one. Sorry but free is just impossible. ----- Original Message ----- From: "PATRICIA OBOYLE" <patriciaob@prodigy.net> To: <ILGREENE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 09, 2003 1:21 PM Subject: Re: [ILGREENE] Cemetery Book > > Too good to be true, Marty. Hello out there fellow ILL researchers, Does anyone have an index to the 1900 census that would be willing to lookup one ILL family for us who disappeared and would only be found in an index? It would be the family of Eliza/Elizabeth S. EARL who may be living as a widow, born about 1824 in ILL and or maybe living with her husband, William G. EARL born about 1819 in MASS-both living in ILL in 1860 and 1870 Ottawa, La Salle, ILL census then went "on the road" as he was working for the Railroad as a shed watchman in 1880 in Wyoming. They apparently left Wyoming for elsewhere as there in no further record of them in Albany Co. Wyoming. Chidren we know of were 3 sons- Charles B.- Born 1851 ILL James T.-1853 ILL Geoge C.-1857 ILL Anyone out there able to help us? Thanks, Dale Skysilver2000@charter.net
