    3. The following item was "lifted" from another list: [email protected] I thought it would interest anyone who is doing research anywhere in Illinois. Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 15:34:45 -0500 From: "Cheryl Rothwell" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] I was talking to a woman at the library the other day and she said the Ill. St. Historical Library, at Old St. Capitol, has a booklet/brochure that lists all the newspapers, and dates, available for inter-library loan and it is FREE. She was viewing tapes for Ottawa, Rockford areas. So I called the next day and asked about it and the woman said, no problem - need your name and address - that was it. So I am expecting it this week - I hope. It will also have the dates the film covers and areas. So if anyone calls, I'm sure they will oblige. 1. Greene Co. Cemeteries - take a look
    2. This site shown below (previously listed in an email on this list) lists many cemeteries in Greene County -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/greene/cemeteries/1_cem_index.html I went to the site and then linked to the individual cemeteries which listed all the persons buried there. I was able to find many many family members, along with some GREAT information that I did not previously have. If you haven't already, it might be well worth your time to look at these lists. THANKS to those who put these lists on the web. Elaine Powell

    2. That's okay. It's Bacon, Jacob Gordon Bacon and he was 46 when he enlisted. I believe he had been a resident of Whitehall , so why did he enlist in Edwardsville? Is it because that's where they were signing people up? And the 3 mo hitch didn't last for the 65 or so men--it only lasted a week. Don't you think that's odd? Jan

This site does list some cemeteries that are not in the books of the historical society. So neither source is a stand alone rescue, but both are quite good and very worthwhile. TOM S

    2. That's really nice. I don't know where to go to find out what happened between April 16, 1861 and June of 1865. He is shown as enlisting in Edwardsville--isn't that sort of funny?--and mustered out April 29, 1861 with about 65 other men--all with the same in/out dates. They'd lived in White Hall pretty much from the time father Joel and wife came to Greene early on. Joel was a path master a couple of times. Son Jacob was 46 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company B. (I have the regiment, but don't want to stop typing to run and look). The service was for 3 mo. duration which was done on a few Illinois regiments. They were to guard prisoners and handle supplies, etc. They didn't even do 3 months. By 1870, widow Nancy had moved to Palmyra in Macoupin County. I can't figure out why or who she knew to have brought that about. She and all children are there in June, except eldest daughter, Martha who married in April and is not counted in the Palmyra enumeration. Martha is my husband's grandmother, and the eldest of the Bacon children. Nancy's sister Acenith Chipman married Allen Lovelace in Greene County and later moved to Texas with her parents Seth and Sarah Chipman. Another sister, Elizabeth Chipman married William Bradshaw in Greene County, had a daughter (Nonie) and died after that. William went on to marry a couple more times and is written up in county history. Is there an index of Greene County cemeteries (Whitehall in particular) available on line? I have to think if he died after being mustered out, he must be buried in or around Whitehall, but I can't explain why every one of the enlistments gives Jacksonville as the residence. Gordon and Nancy's last child was born in 1862. His date of death and location is the only piece of information I need on this couple and it is frustrating. The only thing I haven't tried is court records of divorce. But since all the enlistees were given the same residence, I figured that's the location for the enlistments, not the real home address--and besides, there was this late birth. It's helpful to bounce some of these puzzles off someone else. Thanks. Jan

    3. Karen - What Maberry family are you researching? My grandmother was Alta Maberry Pilkington who lived in White Hall. She is buried in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Wrights, IL. Her father was Edward E Mayberry and her mother Nancy Ellen Long.
