    2. Sorry for eavesdropping.....but A facsimile from the county clerk is a much more secure and accepted document than any other. Mine have been 7.00. NYC now charges 15. No matter what, it's cheap enough when you consider the acceptablility of the certified copy. Jan

    3. Were marriage licenses required in 1874? I can't find any record of my gggrandparents (W.B. BRIDGEFORD and KATIE OSBORN) marriage in White Hall 8/1874, but might there be record of an "application" to marry?

    3. My great-grandparents Myrvan King and Mable Walkington were married Feb 1908. The story goes they eloped to Springfield IL, left Athensville the middle of the night by buggy. Was it possible to make it from Athensville to Springfield in one day by horse and buggy? As the crow flies it 36 miles. Kent

    1. Illinois State Historical Library Inter-Library Loan
    2. Jane Kuck
    3. Yes, I did send this information yesterday. However, I have learned a bit more today, so will re-post the message with additional information. Here is the new "stuff": (217) 524-7216 (the number of the Illinois State Historical Library) or (217) 785-7941 (this number belongs to a staff member, probably the person responsible for sending out the brochure) Also, when I called they inquired if I was a citizen of Illinois. When I told them I was they told me that a copy was available at my local library. I said that I understood that, but I wanted to have my own copy to save time so that when I went to the library, I would already know what I wanted to order. Only then did the person agree to take my mailing address and send me a copy. jk] ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The following item was "lifted" from another list: [email protected] I thought it would interest anyone who is doing research anywhere in Illinois. Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 15:34:45 -0500 From: "Cheryl Rothwell" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] I was talking to a woman at the library the other day and she said the Illinois State Historical Library, at the Old State Capitol, has a booklet/brochure that lists all the newspapers, and dates, available for inter-library loan and it is FREE. She was viewing tapes for Ottawa, Rockford areas. So I called the next day and asked about it and the woman said, no problem - need your name and address - that was it. So I am expecting it this week - I hope. It will also have the dates the film covers and areas. So if anyone calls, I'm sure they will oblige. 1. Re: Illinois State Historical Library Inter-Library Loan
    2. I've already used this service and it's great. They have a catalogue listing all their newspaper holdings by county and the years. It's extensive and there is a special librarian for it. Catalogue seems rather cryptic at first. Translating the abbreviations takes a little bit of time to decipher. I selected Macoupin County, then "Carlinville Democrat" and then the film # containing the years I wanted to search. Depending on whether the film is in the library or out on loan, you will get it promptly. They are generous with the time you're allowed to have it on loan, but usually one is eager to read it and gets it done soon in case others are waiting. One caution: the early issues often put obits, weddings, etc., on the front page in little paragraphs with other ongoing news, and without headings. In other words, no obit columns or "social" columns per se. That makes reading these early films slow--because one has to read almost everything on each page! It's often very entertaining reading, as well--especially the advertisements. Happy hunting! Jan Researching: BACON, CHIPMAN, LORTON, WHEATON, ALLEN, HALL, DAVIS, LOVELACE.
