I did, however find the following individual directories (there may be others) on line: Prairie Farmer's Directory of LaSalle County Illinois 1917 very informative, including the year individual became resident of county. http://www.rootsweb.com/~illasall/farmdir/ * * * * * * * Monroe County, Illinois 1918 Prairie Farmer's Directory The "Prairie Farmer's Reliable Directory of Farmers and Breeders - Monroe Counties, Illinois", is a directory of mostly rural Monroe County in 1918. It contains a wealth of information. It is however very labor intensive to transcribe the full amount of information, and will take some time to get online. I will be adding partial's as I get them completed, this will be done alphabetically (sorry for you T, U, V & W's, etc.) so check back monthly and see what is new. Regards Joe Lorenz http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmonroe/farmind.htm * * * * * * * * Prairie Farmer's Directory of Brown and Schuyler Counties Illinois Prairie Farmer Publishing Company, 1918 Complete Directory of the Farmers of Brown and Schuyler Counties, with valuable information about each farm http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilschuyl/PrairieDirectory/PrairieFD.html * * * * * * * * * As this search was taking too much time I decided to try and shorten the process by looking at the site for the Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, IN. First I went to their search function, http://catalog.acpl.lib.in.us/uhtbin/cgisirsi/ww6M5uUe0O/0/49 By entering the key word as "Prairie Farmer's" I did a "quick search" and the result was that 46 records were found. I would suggest that you follow this route to determine which Prairie Farmer directories are available. When you find one that interests you, click on "view" (to the left of the title) and you will find the complete bibliographic information. Using this information you can go to your local public library and have them request the title through interlibrary loan. [NOTE: I am sure that the loan will NOT come from the Allen County Public Library, as they do not loan their genealogical materials.] * * * * * * * * This is one of the items from the ACPL search: 977.301 G83P Prairie farmer's reliable directory of farmers and breeders, Greene and Jersey Counties, Illinois. (At least now you know that one was published for Greene County.) * * * * * * * * Of course you may also use this search method for other books and materials you would like to borrow and use, or to determine if there are any books available for the area or topic of your interest. However, you may not always be successful in your request for the items, as many libraries do not loan materials from their genealogical collection. Hope that this information will prove helpful and that you find what you are looking for. Jane Kuck Researching in Greene Co: DODGSON, BROWN, WELLS
While browsing a bit, I came across a few research tips that may prove helpful. http://www.genealogy.com/tipspage.html I thought this idea was the best (if you have family in Illinois): November 06, 2000 Keep your eyes open. Directories of farmers for many Illinois counties published ca. 1918 by Prairie Farmer magazine contain the name of the farmer, his wife's maiden name, names of children at home, section of residence, acreage and name of landlord (if renting). You never know what a record might contain until you look in it.
You didn't say what years. Newspapers folded and others replaced them.
Can someone tell me the name of the newspaper that would run the obituaries for Eldred in Greene Co.? Would it be The Telegraph? I need this information for my D.A.R. application. Thanks Linda Mc
There is also a paper which is printed in White Hall called Greene Prairie Press (217-374-2871) and it would probably carry the obits for all of Greene County --- Judy Hartsock <[email protected]> wrote: > The Jacksonville Journal Courier in Jacksonville, > Morgan County IL would probably run them. > Jerseyville > in Jersey county also has a paper, but I don't know > the name of it. The Jacksonville Journal Courier in Jacksonville, Morgan County IL would probably run them. Jerseyville in Jersey county also has a paper, but I don't know the name of it. You could probably pick that up from the internet. --- [email protected] wrote: > Can someone tell me the name of the newspaper that > would run the obituaries > for Eldred in Greene Co.? In Greene County the personal information on the bride and groom appears on the back of the marriage license, so it is only one document. Sometimes there are extra documents when the bride is not of a marriageable age and her mother or father gives permission. The County Clerk's office copies all papers relating to the marriage at no extra cost. Zelma - CA
Thank you for the information. I just ordered a marriage license for my ggrandparents and it's nice to know what to expect. Since I read about this genealogical hint somewhere, I always ask for the marriage license, application and any other papers related to the marriage. I have never been charged more that the price of the marriage license and if they exist, I get copies of the extra papers. For some counties you can get the marriage records from the IL Regional Archives. Pretty cheap if I remember correctly. For the counties that have retained their marriage records and you should have good luck writing the county clerk. Linda McDowell in CA
I've been eavesdropping on the continuing notes regarding marriage licenses, etc. I'm curious as to what department one would send to for the marriage applicatin information? Did the county clerk keep the information or the Board of Health. Although I have one set of grandparent's marriage license from that era, to have the application would be the proverbial "icing on the cake". Thanks and God bless. Licenses were supposed to be done prior to 1874, but not everyone bothered with getting the license. Also not until later, maybe a little before 1890 was the couple asked to fill out information about age, place of birth, parents names, etc. Even then some people did not bother to complete the questions. I really had hopes of getting some information a couple, but when I checked the reverse side of the license, they had not filled it in and apparently the clerk did not check or ask them to do so. I was really disappointed. Zelma - CA
I was there getting copies of marriages, births last fall and at the time it was $8. ea. They are very nice about providing copies for you. Zelma
Kathy: I requested a copy of the original. You need to include the $8.00 fee with your letter. I also included a copy of my driver's license. Some other counties like Madison require it, so I just do it as a matter of course. Linda
Marriage Licience that are obtained from the Court House in Carrollton, Greene Co., IL. are copy's of the orginal with a certification signed and stamped by the Greene Co. Clerk and Recorder. It is also wise to ask for a copy of the back of this Lic. as many times written permission was submitted if the couple were minors and is often missed. In the 1890's, the IL. Board of Health required an application for a marriage Lic. Information such as the Groom's place of residence, occupation, age, color, race, place of birth, father's name and mother's maiden name, and number of marriages; Bride's place of residence, age etc, place of birth, father's name and mother's maiden name, and number of marriages. The place, date, county and witnesses were listed. This application was returned to be filed with the marriage Lic. and is often overlooked and a good source of valuable information. Karen
Yes, marriage licenses were needed. Have you checked with the Court House in Carrollton, IL? They have documents back to early - mid 1800's. Do you need to send the money up front? I sent a letter to the Greene County Clerk in April, asking for a copy of marriage records for a couple in 1831 and saying I understood there would be a fee. I never heard back. Regarding 1831, what will I get? A copy of a ledger page or what? Anything with signatures? Bill
