Recently I spotted in this website the following: Thompson aka Doyle Cemetery Roodhouse Township - Greene County, IL -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Formerly called Doyle Cemetery, this burial ground is about one-fourth mile northwest of Barrow in Roodhouse Township. The cemetery is west of the railroad tracks and on the north side of a good road. Another cemetery will be found about one mile further west, on the south side of the road. Is the "another cemetery....one mile further west" Thompson #1? I can't find and of my "Wines" ancestors in this one which was formerly called the Doyle cemetery and am wondering if the "another cemetery" is the one in which they are buried. I have been informed by volunteers that William Wines, his wife, Dianah (Diana) and two or three of William's children are buried in Thompson #1. Your help would be appreciated. If you were a former resident of Troy or had ancestors who lived in Troy at one time, you are invited to write your family biography. The Troy Historical Society will compile the first-ever book on the history of Troy. This limited edition book will include a narrative and pictorial history of Troy and its surrounding area. This high-quality, hardbound book will be between 200 and 400 pages, depending on the number of biographies and pictures submitted and the number of prepublication book orders received. The purpose in publishing this book is to preserve not only historical records, but also the stories of the people who have lived here and that includes YOU. If interested in submitting your family history, E-mail me at: [email protected] and a brochure will be mailed to you giving directions on how to write your family biography as well as the price of the book and a map showing the areas inwhich the book takes in. Or you can write to : TROY HISTORICAL SOCIETY; P. O. BOX 265; TROY, IL 62294

Dear Kent, I happened to mention your interesting query to my cousin, whose name is Mabel Walkington of Jacksonville. She laughed and told me that your Mable was her husband Marvin's Aunt. She has heard the story about their elopment also, and having lived in that area since she rode a horse to school, she believes they certainly could have made the trip in one day. She is also a genealogist---have the two of you compared notes? Juli Claussen "My great-grandparents Myrvan King and Mable Walkington were married Feb 1908. The story goes they eloped to Springfield IL, left Athensville the middle of the night by buggy. Was it possible to make it from Athensville to Springfield in one day by horse and buggy? As the crow flies it 36 miles. Kent"
I'd appreciate knowing what Methodist churches, if any, are in existence in or near Kane, Illinois t hat might have been in existence in 1850 that is still in use in 2001. My great grandmother, Winnie Jane Hagen-Wines was a member of the Methodist church from the time she was married in 1850 to Allen Wines. She would have attended a Methodist church in Illinois from pre-1850 to the latter part of the 1860's when they migrated to Kansas. I'd like to see if there are church records that are currently in existence in such a church. Ed Wines

I have found the Prairie Farmer Directories from the early 1900's at many local libraries, especially those with genealogy sections. In IL, one can usually borrow them be interlibrary loan from any library in the state. Also, the LDS family history centers have many on microfilm, which you can rent and view at your local branch. You can first check to see if they have the counties you are interested in on film, but using their catalog search at http://www.familysearch.org Juli Claussen
