As someone who has entered over 200,000 records myself, I can provide the following information: Some county records are entered from microfilm copies of actual licenses - some counties from microfilm copies of marriage registers - not sure which was used for Greene however It is not at all uncommon for names to be entered either on the register or on licenses in this manner - probably these individuals went by the names you see and that is what was given. On the majority of licenses (when entering from the license) it is quite common (over 50% of the time) for the name to be written two different ways with two different spellings on the same license - one above where the license was filled in when issued and a different way on the bottom when the actual marriage took place. Thirdly - Marriage records are like all other records, the individuals creating the records were not well educated and tended to spell names as they sounded (a good reason for checking every possible spelling you can think of) when searching for someone. and lastly - the original writing is difficult (most of the time) to make out - the fact that the volunteers are working from microfilm rather than original records makes it that much more difficult to read. I could be wrong, but I'm almost willing to bet that the records the volunteer worked from showed the names as you find them in the data base - we make every effort to enter them correctly - mistakes do happen, but there are far more errors in the original records than result from entry errors. I agree this is a very good site. But I just checked it for some known family records and found that in two cases the first name for two different family members was not the same as in my records. Example: James Arthur Davis (mt 1. Rosanna Pruitt, 2.Margaret Rawlins, 3.Amanda Denham) is listed as Arthur Davis. And Mary Amanda Davis, mt. John Eveland, is listed as Amanda Davis. Now this could mean one of two things: either the person went by their middle name or the records were entered incorrectly. Does anyone know? Thanks. I agree with Tom's comment to keep sending replies (or "Cc:") to the entire list, even if you are answering a question you think no one else is interested in. Like Tom, I have discovered valuable information (found some g-g-g-g-grandparents!) from someone else's family question. Do be sure and keep updating the Subject Line in the reply, using Surnames if possible. Thanks to the Listers, this site is my most valuable resource. Susan RENO LeBlanc
Good Advise!!
Betty, Thanks for considering the fact that not everyone will be interested in your Caudle information, BUT if you don't stay with the list some cousin who is watching and waiting might be cut off just when they are ready to add a bit of information that would be of enormous value. It isn't difficult to skip or delete items with headings that indicate the general line of discussion if I'm not interested. Several times I've found a marriage for one of the women in a file because of information like you're exchanging. That type of discovery could open a whole new family line. My thinking is, stay on the list with all your family information from the area. It can only increase chances for family members to reach one another. TOM SAXTON
McDowell Publications, 11129 Pleasant Ridge Road, Utica, Kentucky 42376 has Greene, 1879,813p and Greene & Jersey, 1885,1281p on their list of Books on Demand section of their catalog. Books will be re-issued with every-name indexes. Once tabulated, they will inform you when the books you are interested in will be published and how much they will cost. You will have the opportunity to purchase at HALF-PRICE if you act promptly. You can call or write to them at the above address or [email protected] Phone 1-270-275-4075 or 1-800-285-4075 I have not interest in the McDowell Publications, other than wanting several of their books on the Books on Demand list. Hope this was of help to list members; especially Ray Goodwin, who asked if there were any copies of the 1879 History of Greene County available. Sandy Snyder Goodman
Marsha could you tell me what the article in the book tells about Elijah Dodson? He's the son of my gggfather. Thanks
Thank-you Tom. I do the same thing...scan over names that don't ring a bell and pay attention to those that do. By reading other peoples information even though at first glance it did not seem to pertain to my family, I found I was related to a lot of people researching in Greene County as well as Macoupin and Morgan. Karen Barnard (who helps a lot of people who use this list serve) and I share some common ancestors..I just found that out recently. She was my classmate in Nursing School years ago. I have not seen her for years although I hope to see her sometime this year. I have the book "The Journals of William E. McLellin 1831-1836" which tells of McLellin and Parley P. Pratts missionary efforts in this area in 1833. They preach in the home of Esquire Walker at one point which I believe to be my 4th great grandfather, John Walker, founder of Walkerville, Greene Co. Ill. John's son, Edward Robertson Walker was a branch president of the Apple Creek Branch around 1842 and in 1852 traveled with the Mormon Pioneers across the plains to Utah. I am trying to find the parents of John Walker. If anyone on this list has LDS (Mormon) connections that might have originated from these early missionary efforts, please contact me. Some of the names mentioned in the journal from this area are: Ephraim Harper, Henry Robley, Griswold, Coon, William Watson, William Campbell, Elijah dodson, James Henderson, Daniel Henderson, Michael Baker, John Baker, Robert Negus, James Turney, M. Bledsoe, John Scott, Aaron Holden, John Russell, Saml Gates, James H. Reid, Luther Calvin, James White, Matthew Dayton, Geroge W. Clendien, Thomas Turner. There was also a visit by Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball to Apple Creek in 1842 and they stayed in the home of Esq. Walker. Marcia Walker Shelton

Thanks! Is there any other indexes for marriages in Illinois? That index goes to 1900--it will help will some other people in my family. I appreciate it. Melodi
Is there an online marriage index for Greene County or is there some nice person on this list that could do a lookup for me. It is important it is my parents. Grooms name: Robert Edward Morehouse Brides name: Jacqueline Leonteen Hartman Date: between 1960-1967 Also is there a birth and death index online. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Melodi
Marriages 1960-67 fall under the IL Privacy act of 50 years or is it 75? Don't believe you will find any that recent online. In fact you might have a difficult time even getting a copy in the Courthouse because of this Act, unless you are the person(s) involved. This is quite interesting. Thomas Caudle, age 30, born in Illinois is married to Margaret, age 29, born in Iowa or Indiana and they had Mary, William, Sarah and Pleasant. They are in Township 1 North (I have to figure our where this is). This is in the 1860 census of Wayne Co., Illinois. Now in Township 1 South I find the following information: Caudle, Hester, age 45, born in Tennessee children are Louisa J., age 21, Isaac Y., age 16, Martha M., age 14, William B., age 11 and Margaret A., age 9. Thus this is your Hester and I must have another Thomas Caudle, but people were asking about Pleasant so I am sure I have the right family there. I am only trying to find the children of Thomas and Margaret or more specific, the children he had with Naomi Smith Weddle. I do not know how much folks who are on this list are interested in our Caudles...Perhaps I should reply to Jerilyn directly? To answer information below: Yes, Hester on the 1860 is my Hester Ann Butcher Caudle widow of Thomas Parish Caudle who died in 1851. My best guess is that Thomas Caudle who m. Naomi Smith is the son of Isham Caudle and Sarah Arnold who are buried in Land Cemetery in Macoupin Co. One of Thomas Parish Caudle and Hester Ann Butcher Caudle's children was Rebecca Elizabeth Caudle who m. Henry Zachariah Emmons...They are buried close to Uncle Isham and Aunt Sarah in the Land Cemetery...while her parents are buried in Buckeye Cemetery in Wayne Co. The Caudles apparently went first to Macoupin Co. and Greene Co...then some went to Wayne Co. ...and some came back to Macoupin and Greene and some even made another move back to Wayne... There is a woman named Ellen Hill who is a schoolteacher. She writes that she is descended from Thomas Caudle who died April 19, 1896 and who m. Naomi Smith b. 5 Oct 1833 in Ohio. They had at least one child who was her great grandfather: Joseph O. b. may 4, 1878 in Springfield , Wayne Co. Il. d. aug. 1952 Lagrande Union Co. Avie, did I not give you this information? Maybe I didn't. Thomas P Caudle was Thomas Parish Caudle. born January 20, 1811 in Tennessee and died April 27, 1851 in Wayne Co. Illinois. He married Hester Ann Butcher September 26, 1832 in Carrolton, Illinois Greene Co. Hester Ann Butcher was the daughter of Isaac Butcher and Rebecca Narcissus Rentfro. Her mother married twice. Her first marriage was to John Land April 12, 1802 in Madison co. Ky. They had two children Fountain Land b. 1803 in Madison Co. Ky who married Emily Ruyle Sept 15, 1832 in Macoupin Co. Illinois and Cecilia Land b. 1804 who m. Garland Parish in Maurey Co. Tenn. Rebecca Narcisus Rentfro m. second Isaac Butcher and had seven children including Hester Ann Butcher who married Thomas Parish Caudle. A question arises..how was Thomas Parish Caudle related to the Parish family?? His wife's half sister married a Parish... Earlier I mistakenly thought that Thomas P. Caudle's mother was a half sister to Cecilia Land who m. a Parish...It was his wife who was a half sister to Cecilia Land. The father of Thomas Parish Caudle was Joshua Caudle who was born 1770 in Chatham Co. NC. and died 1850 in Wayne Co. Illinois. Joshua Caudle m. Eliz. Greene. Joshua and his sons Thomas, John and Isham bought land in Macoupin Co. Illinois in 1834-1836. then records show land bought in Wayne Co. Illinois by this Caudle family. Someone asked about a Thomas Caudle who married Naomi Smith Wheddle...I can't find a solid clue to who this Thomas is. I have suspected that it is Thomas who was a son of Isham Caudle and his wife Sarah Arnold Caudle. Isham was a brother to Thomas P. above. I have found 11 children for Isham and Sarah... The birthdates I have range from 1823 to 1842. I do not have a birth date for this Thomas. There is a Thomas Caudle who m. Naomi Smith and who died April 1896. There is a Thom Cordle age 25 farmer born Ill on the 1850 Wayne Co Illinois census with a wife age 19 or 17...the handwriting i s bad. They have a one yr old child female with two initials...the first looks like an M or N. There are Cordle families before and after them on the census...including ones I recognize as our Caudles...Cordle was a favorite spelling of the census takers for Caudle. betty At 06:33 PM 2/18/2001 -0500, you wrote: >In our information we only have a Thomas P Caudle who married Hester.
