    3. Seeking anyone with information on a Elias Doyle. (he may have had a son named Raymond??) Elias Doyle took in James Vincenzo Phillippo (b. Italy) when James came through IL on the orphan train from NYC. James was my great-grandfather. Since he was raised by the Doyle family, I am hoping that there is someone out there that could tell me about his childhood and maybe even have some pictures of him as a young boy, teen, or young adult. James V. Phillippo m. Lettie Lorena Ansell (who worked, I think, helping keep house, for the Doyle family. Thanks! Alicia A W Morgason

    1. Re: [ILGREENE] Out-of-state marriages for Illinois couples
    2. If you are looking at marriages in the 1930s, the experience of my parents in 1933 may be that of many. They got married across the river in Missouri because they wanted to keep it quiet. Reason: my mother would have been fired from her job if she was known to be married -- even though my father was suffering from a terminal illness at the time. Their wedding was announced a year later in the local paper - with the notation "These are two fine, upstanding young people." Carol Adams

    1. [ILGREENE] Out-of-state marriages for Illinois couples
    2. Jane Kuck
    3. Although this item appeared in the Peoria, IL, Journal Star on 4 Nov 2002, I feel that it contains information that may be important to all Illinois researchers who have looked in vain for a particular ancestral marriage. The item appeared in Bill Adams column, for which he combs old newspapers to scout out interesting, unusual and unique stories. This one carried a date of November 4, 1939. "Nearly half the couples to whom marriage licenses were issued at Burlington, Iowa, during October were from Peoria and vicinity, it was reported. There were 78 licenses issued, and 35 of the number went to persons living near Peoria. During the same month, only 69 were issued in Peoria County. Desire to avoid the eight-day waiting period and the pure marriage law is given as the reason for marriages of many Illinois couples in Iowa." NOTE: As the marriage laws were statewide, I am sure that these circumstances existed in many counties. If a couple lived not to far from the state line other states might also have hosted many Illinois marriages. So, depending upon the place of residence, one might look in border counties in Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin as well as Iowa. Hope that this will help many researchers knock down a few brick walls. Jane Kuck

What I'm going to do sometime in the next few weeks is update our surname page and list names with links to the photos we have, so wherever they are we can find them more easily. I'm not sure why Grandma ended up on their site instead of ours, but maybe a previous coordinator was involved in both sites? Jeannie

    1. [ILGREENE] Blackshaw/Dayball
    2. Jerry Cowley
    3. I am working on the Blackshaw/Dayball line from Lincolnshire, England, and have come up with a puzzle I need some advice on. Joseph Blackshaw 1831, assistant postmaster and storekeeper in Berdan, IL, married 1) Rebecca Dayball 1828/29 in 1854 in Missouri and 2) Mary Meredith Strain 1843, in 1873 prob. Greene or Macoupin Co.. We have always assumed that Rebecca had died previous to the second marriage. We have no found Rebecca with her children in the 1870 St. Louis census. Her daughter Sarah Victoria is boarding at a school for the deaf in Fulton, MO. In the 1890 city directory for St. Louis she is listed as living with her son, William, also deaf. Joseph, also known as One-armed Joe, died in 1899 in Macoupin Co. Where would one search for divorce papers, for example, in this instance? The daughter of the first marriage, Sarah Victoria, who never married, lived with her half-brothers and sisters from the first marriage later in life, so there doesn't appear to be any animosity, but rather some type of amicable resolution. We have photos of her taken with these folks during her maturity. Thanks, Jerry in Boise

I need to put a link to their site for your family on our family page. We have it as a link on our Resources page : Researching your roots in Central Illinois. Is there a format that is best to use when sending material for the archives? >> Hi, Tom, ILGenWeb has a page for submitting documents and pictures. <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/il/ilfiles.htm#instructions> What happens when you submit is that the photos or files go onto the Greene Co. Database (Archives) page into the "miscellaneous" section, with an email link to you, the submitter. I agree that it would be nice to have a photo page. There must be some way to write html code to pull the photo images out of the database and put them into a separate page. I'll look into it. Meanwhile, go ahead and post your files on the ILGenWeb page. And you might want to let the list know that you've posted, too. Here's what they say about what kind of images to submit: "In addition to text files, the Archives are now accepting scans of records. These submissions must be saved in the following formats in order to be best used on the internet: .jpg, .jpeg, or .tif. Most scanner programs have the ability to "Save As" to these formats if it does not use these formats." Hope this helps, Jeannie Smith List Coord. for ILGreene-L@rootsweb.com Co. 2. Despite the minor start up glitches the site works well and has a greatly improved appearance. Great to see new blood come in with fresh ideas and undiluted interest. Thank you for the hours already spent and those yet to come. Hope to see more input from listers to add to the archives. A separate pictures section would be great. I had sent one in of my Grandmother quite sometime ago and enjoyed viewing it there. >> Can you tell me what your grandma's name was? I looked at the old page and can only find one link to a photo, one of a John Romine, and it's on our Databases page, aka USGenWeb archives. I didn't delete any old links except one to a Baker genealogy web page and a Descendants of Stephen Wood web page, and those because the links are broken and I really need to post to the list to see if anyone is attached to those people and know if there's a new link. I agree, it's nice to have the old photos up on our page. That way if the original is ever lost, or borrowed, or not in your possession, you can always look online to see it. Plus with the scanned photos you can zoom in on the jewelry, the buttons, the background, etc., to see what else is in the photo. If for some reason the photo has disappeared, do you stll have the scanned image to upload? We can add it to our archive files. Jeannie Smith Co. It only worked for a short while, anyway, then the other servers found me and I gave up. Now I just ignore it or forward it depending on my mood. I've unblocked it now so everyone should be able to get through. And AOL isn't case-sensitive on email names so wordgenius, Wordgenius, WordGenius, or wordGenius should all get through fine to me.
