    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, 09 December, 1999 12:53 AM Subject: [ILHAMILT-L] Rices from Perry Co., IL GIJoe, David Helvey and Nancy Helvey, You all have an interest in the Perry Co. Rices. So--you have the beginning of your Rice Research Group. As far as I know, those Rices are not of my line. However, I will offer here a very generalized (and skimpy) overview of some Rices of Southern Illinois, including Perry Co. My Edmund Rice family came from Massachusetts (settled there in 1638), and in the 5th American generation, Ebenezer Rice, went by way of a short stay in Vermont, to Maury Co., TN. When he died, his children went mostly to White Co., IL. They had a distant cousin, Sylvanus (Sylvania?) of Charlemont, Mass., (married to Margaret Shurtliff), who migrated (probably after a short stay in New Hampshire, not too far from Charlemont) to Virginia in 1816, and from there to Illinois in 1832. His children: (1) Cyrus, b. 1798, moved to Albion, Edwards Co., IL; (2) Esther married Ansel Phillips and moved to Edwards Co.; (3) Dorcas married John Gibson and moved to Olney, IL; (4)Mathew married Nancy Mills and moved to Albion; (5 & 6) Sylvanus, Jr., and Oliver moved to Albion. Mary Ann Rice, born 25 Dec 1816, dau of Sylvanus' brother, Luther Rice, became a teacher at Female Seminary, Hardinsburg, Breckinridge Co., KY. The Rices of Gallatin Co., are mostly from the same group as Ebenezer's descendants in White Co. Not my Rice line unless connected from Sylvanus (Sylvania?), way back there: In 1804, James H. Rice was on the tax list for Garrard Co., KY, beside Patrick H. Rice (presumed brother). P. H. Rice was bondsman for marriage of James H. to Ann Rice, 1806, Washington Co., KY. Ann was the dau of William & Frances (Granger) Rice of VA. P. H. Rice married Ann's sister, Polly. They went to Livingston Co., KY, where P. H. died in 1821. James H. & family, and Cary Allan Rice & family, moved to White Co., IL, where they lived side by side until James H. died in 1845. Their children share some middle names, including Watson. There is a connection between this Rice family and Matthew Rice of Prince Edward Co., VA. Could they be part of Sylvanus's group that went to VA? James Harvey Rice named his boys for ministers: Jonathan E. Rice, James McGready Rice, amd Benjamin Franklin (Spilman) Rice. I have more on this family, but since they are not the Perry Co., group, I will not copy more at this time. FRANKLIN CO. CONNECTION: Edward Young Rice (a judge), born Logan Co., KY, 8 Feb 1820, went to Montgomery Co., IL. He was the youngest child of Francis & Mary Rice's 7 sons & 4 daus. Francis Rice, a Methodist minister, born Caswell Co., NC, married Mary Gooch (died 1852 at 75 years of age) who was the dau of William and _____ Carr Gooch. Francis & Mary also had a son, Brooks Rice, who married Margaret Bailey. Their children: Rhoda Rice and twins, Frances Rice, b. 18 Nov 1871, Benton, IL, and William Franklin Rice (18 Nov 1871, Benton - 23 Jul 1945 Johnston City, IL) who married Emma Weston 17 Sep 1893, Benton. Children of William Franklin and Emma (Weston) Rice: Chester Paul Rice, Barney Tilbert Rice, Artie Tecumseh Rice, Beulah G. Rice, Emma Mae Rice, Harry Frank Rice, Verbal Marie Rice and Wilma L. Rice. David Edward Young Rice, born abt. 1812, was the son of David & Elizabeth Spelman Rice. The father died Livingston Co., 1814, and Elizabeth married James B. Willis, and they migrated to IL with her son, David, and her parents, Benjamin Spilman & wife Nancy (Rice) Spilman, dau of James Rice of Prince Edward Co., VA. David E. Y. Rice became a Presbyterial minister in Cape Girardeau, MO. My files contain no proof that Edward Young Rice, Montgomery Co., IL (of the above paragraph), was related to Spilmans and Rices, but Spilmans later moved to Montgomery Co., IL. Thomas Rice of Caswell Co., NC, died 1804, Davidson Co., TN. There was a very prominent Rice family in Davidson, adjacent to Maury Co., TN. PERRY CO., IL, RICES: One of the Rice families in the 1860 Perry Co. census came from Ireland. Other Rices in Perry Co.: In Tamaroa, households #183, Hiram Rice, 53, born TN, and #184, George W. Rice, 33, born TN, and #185, Alex. H. Rice, 25, born IL, are probably related, I would guess as father and two sons. Household #195, Gilbert Rice, 30, born IL, might be, or might not be, another son. There is in Pinckneyville, household #225 an Abner Rice, 50, born KY, who also might or might not be related to the Tamaroa Rices. I won't list any of the marriages because they can be found on the State of Illinois Marriages site. In the Robertson Co., TN, 1840 census, there is a Hiram Rice, between 60-70. In the household is a female, 15-20, and two young males, one is 15-20 and one, 20-30. Neither of the boys would be the Hiram Rice of Perry Co., IL, because he would already have gone to (Perry Co.) Illinois, where assumed son, Alex., was born in 1835. 1840 Robertson Co., Hiram Rice household: 000110001 - 0001 The female and two young males could be relatives or hired hands who had come to help the elderly Hiram. Rice listings for 1830 census of Robertson Co., TN: Page 423 - Hiram Rice 10001001 - 00001 (male under five, male 20 - 30, and male 50-60; female 20-30. The 50-60 year old is Hiram, shown in 1840, above, as 60-70, and the 20-30 year old matches with Hiram, (Jr.) who would have been 23 in 1830, with his wife and 3 year old son, George W. Rice. Other listings in the 1830 census for Robertson Co., TN: Page 417 - Elizabeth Rice 01011 - 0001201 Page 427 - Waller W. Rice 01011 - 10001 Perhaps you have already examined Robertson Co.as a possible link to your Perry Co. Rices. This connection is based on supposition, but it sounds reasonable enough to be a starting point for your research if you haven't already crossed that bridge. Good luck!
