From: "Wanda Avila" To: "Cody Sanders" Subject: Re: Old Slave House Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 19:24:01 -0500 I believe that Sisk is house-sitting. The state needs someone to live in the house to protect against vandalism and should, I think, be paying Sisk. The state would probably have a hard time finding anyone else willing to live in the Old Slave House, much less to pay rent for the privilege. Gallatin County doesn't have a hot rental market, after all. -------------------5------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: Cody Sanders To: wavila@erols.com Sent: Wednesday, March 20, 2002 6:21 PM Subject: Re: Old Slave House I see, but if the state is having financial problems why are they allowing Sisk to live in the house rent-free? So the previous owner gets to live in the white elephant? I'm not sure I accept this one. Wanda Avila -----------------------No 1------------------ ----- Original Message ----- From: Cody Sanders To: wavila@synpub.com Sent: Wednesday, March 20, 2002 1:27 AMSubject: Old Slave House Wanda, At present I'm not subscribed to the Gallatin RW mail list but read the message you posted. The State of Illinois paid half a million dollars to purchase the old slave house and are allowing the former owner to reside there rent- free. From the message you received it sounds like the house will remain closed to the public indefinitely. Tax payers why aren't you yelling foul? The state hired a professor to research the history of the house and write a report. Wonder what they plan to do with it, or did they ever have plans? What happened to the three rascals or whatever they were? Thanks for posting that information. Glad I don't pay taxes in that state anymore! C. D. 2. How would one find a marriage record if you have checked on a couple of counties you think the couple would possibly have gotten married. Also if you are not completely sure of the date but have checked within a 3 yr. period? In the late 1800's or early 1900's was it required that a J.P. or minister enter a marriage cert. on file? 3. Does anyone happen to have contact with John Boyd? I have lost his e-mail address and need to contact him. Also, I have run into a fascinating web page with the Dr, Edward Dawes medical journal on it. Lots and lots of familiar Gallatin Co names on it, although I don't know where Rectorville might be it, must be fairly close with all these names on it. It is a great study on the illnesses of those times and the barter and trade system worked to pay their bills! Bless the person who put this on a page for all to see! I have been enthralled. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jgholson/dawesMedJ.htm Thanks, Carol Dugger

    3. Just another attempt to locate someone who might have closer ties to one Abraham GREER, son of Asa and Rebecca (Neighbors) GREER. Abraham "may" be the link I need to prove out my mother's line of GREER. Francis Marion GREER was born in Gallaten county, Ills, 1830. He is found in the household of his mother, Maragret GREER, in Morehouse Parish, LA. in 1850, along with an older brother, William M. (Marshal?) Greer who was born per the census age, 1825, in Tenn. Back in Tenn. records, I found where Abraham Greer had married a Peggy Kinney, 1825 (could'a been 1826?) in Williamson county, Tenn. As I believe the family moved into Ills., our family history states "the family moved back to Tenn., 1834", this is the "best match" I can find. It is known that the family moved into LA. in the period of 1848. Checking "names", I did find where a male "Kinney" had purchased land in the same area that we found Margaret and the "boys", although I don't have that info right in front of me, I believe it was 1848. This leads me to believe that Maragret moved "with her family", the Kinney family, into LA. F.M. Greer named his first born son "after the grandfather"....making it appear that HIS family would have been Abraham? That first born was named Thomas Abraham GREER. and went by "Abe". Other sons were named Frances Marion, Jr., William Jeffersopn, and, James Allen GREER. The only daughter was named Rebecca May Ann GREER.

The State of Illinois acquired the property about a year and a half ago, but there has not been any appropriation to date from the Illinois General Assembly to staff and operate the site. Since the State of Illinois is experiencing a round of severe budget cuts right now, it seems unlikely that a new, unstaffed site such as this will receive operational funds when sites that are currently staffed are undergoing budget cuts. Meanwhile, the Old Slave House is being maintained to the best of our ability, and the former owner has been retained as a tenant to provide security. We hope to seek staff and operational funding in future years to open the site to the public.
