I am interested in the History of the activities on the Ohio River between 1800 and 1850. More specifically, the identification of those men who made their living on the river. According to USC 1810 Randolph Co., IL Terr, there was a C. SMOCK listed. This C. SMOCK lived on the Ohio River near Cave in Rock. There were several adult males in his household who have not been further identified, nor has the livelihood of C. SMOCK been revealed. C. SMOCK died before 1816 leaving a widow, later identified as Sarah, and a large family who continued to live near the Ohio River at least thru 1825 and probably as late as 1840. Sarah died in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., IL in 1850 at age 78. The SMOCK family identifies with the communities of Cave in Rock, Rosiclare, and Elizabethtown now in Hardin Co., IL. There are SMOCKs in the area to this day. I would like to correspond with anyone interested in this family and their relationship to activity on the Ohio River. Best regards, Hugh

Hi list, There was a tornado around the Equality area today, but I don't know much about the damage. Storms were rampant in the Gallatin, Saline and White Counties today. hi, At one time it was common practice to have several towns of the same name in the state, and many towns and cities had former names with a few having had several, so if you have used a current map to find an old town name you may have created your very own brick walls or even worse you have connected with the wrong lines. "Bloomfield" is an excellent example of this common practice, just look at any current map and find it now in Johnson County close to Vienna, in 1958 it had a population of 80. Did you know there was another Bloomfield in Adams County? Close to Quincy, in 1958 it had a population of 25. There were others in Edgar, Fulton, Greene, Johnson and Scott Counties and all were spelled "Bloomfield." Plus precincts in Johnson and Scott Counties by the same name of "Bloomfield." Nine localities, all named "Bloomfield." Do you need more examples, maybe hundreds of examples? Sure hope you can easily see the point i am trying to make... many genealogies are out there now with improper connections because an inexperienced genealogist has picked the wrong county and matched up the wrong "SMITH" or "JONES" or "WHOEVER" because they thought they had the right county to chose from. Wrong connections are now made as the names that were available in that county were close so they figured a few misspellings or similar names would suffice. Or the town was the correct town but the county changed several times? Some still can't make the connection and are experienced enough to know that close doesn't always count, so they know they have hit a brickwall. My suggestion is that you jot down the towns your ancestors are known to have lived in and look them up on the statewide list of over 15,750 place names using your Ctrl/f keys to do the search. Copy down each county that each town appears in after the town name and you'll probably be amazed to find that instead of them moving all around the state they lived in a few neighboring counties. For details of when the town was active you could consult the web pages listed below for the 25 Northeast Counties as those are now online, the 44 South Counties will have details online beginning later this month, and the last 33 West Counties should have details online beginning this summer. When those new pages are up and running i'll send out an updated e-mail here and i'll post it on each Rootsweb county list as each county becomes available for research. The following web pages are enormous and each will take over four minutes to download if your connection is a dial up modem and AOL is NOT busy and your computer is PROPERLY tuned. If you get a message that AOL is busy just rapidly tap on your reload button a few times and AOL wakes up and lets you in. It works for me as i use the IE browser instead of the AOL browser... here are the url's: Illinois Family History Research: Place Names of Each Illinois County is a statewide list of over 15,750 towns, cities and townships known to have ever existed, grouped by county, covers all 102 counties. I visited the Asbury Cemetery last spring. It is a nice, well kept cemetery. Bill Baker

I'd be interested in knowing who the following individuals married (and of course they're dates of birth, death, etc.). (1) Virgil Frederick Locklar (2) Ella Gertrude, Locklar (3) John Earl Locklar (4) Thelma Juanita Locklar (5) Mary Marguerite Locklar (6) Ruby Geraldine Locklar Parents of the above were Andrew Jackson Locklar (1859) and Mary Eliza Wren (born 1881). They married about 1898. After Andrew died in 1925, Mary Eliza married Grant Saffer who had 3 daughters by a previous marriage, whom she raised. They were Pauline, Margie and Bette Saffer. Grant Saffer ran a restaurant in Old Shawnee called "The Egyptian Cafe". Any info on this family would be appreciated. PENNYPEACE@prodigy.net
Does anyone have a copy of "History and Families of Gallatin County, Illinois" vol 1 - 1988"? I'd be interested in knowing if a source for the Locklar-Wren info is given. I am trying to trace the path of my grandmother Tabitha Sater Bishop who married Joseph Bishop in 1884, and had 5 children. I finally recieved a copy of my gggrandmother's death certificate, and it has her father listed as John Godrey, and it shows Tabitha as being born in Newark Ohio. When Tabitha married Joseph she was listed with the maiden name of Cowen. Her death certificate shows her as Tabitha Sater Bishop, and I know Tabitha's middle name was Jane not Sater, so to this day I have not been able to find out what the Sater link is. I had at one time thought that it may have been her birth name, had she been adopted by Cowen's later, but her father's name being shown on her birth certificate is John W. Godrey. Any help would be greatly appricated. Angelique Check out my home page http://community.webtv.net/DiamondDmon/WelcometoMyHomePage

All, I can find no Genealogical Society for Pope Co., IL. Is there such an organization, perhaps by another name? My objective is to find the first name of C. SMOCK of the USC 1810 IL Terr., Randolph Co. which area became Gallatin Co., IL in 1812 and Pope Co., IL in 1816. A Sarah SMOCK was a testator to a 1816 will in Gallatin Co., IL which did not reach probate there. It is possible that the probate took place in Pope Co. as the Co. was established in the same time frame. I need someone to take a look at the Pope Co. probate records.
