    2. Jon Musgrave
    3. Hello, Could someone with an 1870 census of Gallatin County check something for me. I'm trying to find if Robert G. Lanphier lived in Gallatin County as early as the 1870 census. I know he moved down prior to 1876. His last name may be spelled "Lamphere" or some other combination. Thanks in advance, Sincerely, Jon Musgrave www.IllinoisHistory.com

    3. Terri and Liesa, Have you looked here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~davidca/Gall-cem/cem.htm It is a great resource to have the total Gallatin Co. cemetery books from the 1960s on line. The section number and some directions to each cemetery is also included. Of course, Gallatin Co. has a new road numbering and naming system that is a lot of help to genealogists, but I don't know if these come up on the maping system pages. Sorry I can't give directions either. I kind of find it by winding around and getting lost (or getting directions).

    1. C. SMOCK of Randolph Co., IL Terr 1810
    2. In an effort to identify C. SMOCK of USC 1810 IL Terr Randolph Co. I have found the following SMOCK descendants with first names beginning with the letter C. Calvin, son of Barney, son of C. SMOCK Casper, unk (possible son of C. SMOCK) Charles, Son of Thomas, possible grandson of C. SMOCK Cornelius, son of Alfred, son of C. SMOCK The name, Cornelius, is found in earlier SMOCK families in KY, PA and NJ. C. SMOCK and wife, Sarah, had a son, Hiram, b. 1800 in KY (calculated from USC 1850 Hardin Co., IL). Hiram had no known children with a name beginning with the letter C. In USC 1800 KY there was a Cornelius SMOCK with a family in Bullitt Co. He is believed to be the son of Barney/Barent and Ann/Antje (Cozine/Cosyn) SMOCK of Mercer Co., KY. This Cornelius was christened in Conewago, PA in 1772, came to KY about 1784 with his parents who settled in Mercer Co., KY. This Cornelius SMOCK is carried in several public records as an adult in Mercer Co., KY. His marriage record has not been found. He is not found in KY in USC 1810 or thereafter. It appears that Cornelius left KY between 1800 and 1810. There is no SMOCK listed in Randolph Co. in 1807 (then a Co. of IN Terr), so the window fo C. SMOCK's arrival in Randolph Co. is between 1807 and 1810. It has been suggested that C. SMOCK of IL Terr (1810) = Cornelius SMOCK of KY (1800). Need some evidence of C. SMOCK's identity. Best regards, Hugh

    3. Hi to all.......... Since my last post about Charles McCLAIN in 1820 in Gallatin Co, Il............it is proven.......the man that I research with (I can't leave home due to disable husband) went to Gallatin Co last Thursday and bingo right off the bat proved it was my great great great granddaddy!!!!!! I sure would love to exchange info with anybody that might be just remotely related...... His wife's name was Elizabeth ??.....their oldest son (my line) was John McCLAIN and wife Lydia ?? of which they may have very well married in that area...... Charles McCLAIN was in Gallatin Co by at least 1817 November 4 ....date of his land grant....... he was there in 1818 with himself and 11 people in the household......he was there in 1820 himself and 13 people in the household..these were from the state census....for some reason he is not on the federal census of 1820.....1828 he sold his property in Gallatin Co...the deed state his name, Charles McCLAIN, his wife's name, Elizabeth ?? and that he is now living in Weakley County, Tennessee!!!!!!!!!!!! 1830 Census of Weakley Co finds him and 17 people in the household......... I will gladly exchange info, furnish info on these people.........surely there is at least one person out there that has a connection........thanks pj

One of the early spellings of SMOCK was SMAK. I have also seen SMOKE. Its all in the hearing of the clerk doing the writing. Several of the marriages you listed are mine and I suspect that there are more, but I can't make the connection yet. I'm focusing on SMOCKs of Southern IL (Randolph, Gallatin, Pope, and Hardin Cos of time period 1800 to 1850. Community is Cave in Rock which over time was in each county listed. I have two major hurdles- 1) Identity of C. SMOCK, USC 1810 Randolph Co., IL Terr 2) Parents of Thomas SMOCK, b. 1821 Cave in Rock, Pope Co., IL There is something of a mystery about the SMOCK family of early Southern IL. The widow of C. SMOCK is identified in 1816 as Sallie SMOCK, but no evidence of his death has been revealed. Sallie/Sarah made application for probate in Gallatin Co., IL Terr but no probate record has been found. In 1816 Pope Co., was created from Gallatin Co., so it is possible that the probate was transferred to Pope Co. At this time I have not uncovered a SMOCK probate record in Pope Co. I could use some help here. The parents of Thomas SMOCK have not been revealed. Thomas, b. 1821, was not the child of Sarah SMOCK who headed the only SMOCK family in the area in 1818 to 1830, further she was reported as a widow from 1816 to 1830 and died a widow in 1850. She is not accounted for by name in 1840, but an elderly female is in the household of Hiram SMOCK in 1840. This is, surely, Sarah SMOCK, widow. Thomas, age 9 in 1830 may be listed as 1 male (10-15) in Sarah SMOCK's household where Hiram SMOCK, 30, is probably the other male (20-30). It is possible that Hiram was Thomas' father, but no marriage or wife has been identified until Hiram married in 1837 to Lydia HUGHES. I need to determine if Hiram was married before 1837. Help here would also be appreciated. Best regards, Hugh

    2. Carol Dugger
    3. Can one of you historians please tell me if there was an "uprising" in the Omaha area around October of 1852? My ggf died then and I am wondering if perhaps there was some Indian raid or something that happened that might have caused his death? I don't have any idea of what the area was like in those times, how densely populated or if there was some other major event going on, maybe cholera or whatever? Thanks, Carol Dugger CA

    1. Re: [ILRANDOL] Early 19th Century
    2. Tom, IL Territory was established in 1809. Randolph Co., came to IL Terr. from IN Terr. at that time. So any activity in Randolph Co., before 1809 was in IN Territory. I understand it exists, but have not seen, the 1807 Census of Randolph Co., IN Terr. This record would tell you if your interest was in the Co. in 1807. I am looking for the SMOCK family who were in Randolph Co., IN before 1808. They are on the USC 1810, Randolph Co., IL Terr as C. SMOCK with large family. They settled in vicinity of Cave in Rock, now Hardin Co., IL. My main focus is to determine the identity of C. SMOCK. Hope this helps. Best regards, Hugh

    1. Will or Probate of C. SMOCK, died c1816 Gallatin or Pope Co., IL
    2. C. SMOCK died c1816 as his wife, Sallie/Sarah, applied for probate in Gallatin Co., IL Terr in 1816. There is no probate record in Gallatin Co. This is the year that the residence area (Cave in Rock) where Sallie lived became a part of Pope Co., IL Terr. I suspect that her probate application was sent to Pope Co., for action. Is there such a record in Pope Co., IL Terr (IL did not become a State until 1818). Need some guidance as to where to look. Best regards, Hugh

    1. The mystery of Thomas SMOCK
    2. In 1810 a C. SMOCK and family were listed in the census of that year for Randolph Co., IL Terr. as the only SMOCKs. By 1816 Gallatin Co., IL (from Randolph Co.). Sallie SMOCK is a widow and in 1818 Pope Co., IL (from Gallatin Co., IL) she is listed as widow SMOCK as she is in 1820. By 1830 Pope Co., IL she is listed as Sarah SMOCK. In 1840 Hardin Co., IL (from Pope Co., IL) Hiram, Barney and Alfred are listed and Sarah apparently is in the household of Hiram SMOCK as an elderly female. In 1850 she is listed in the Hardin Co., IL Mortuary Schedule as died at age 78 (= b. 1772). In 1850 a Thomas SMOCK, age 28, (= b. 1821/2) is listed in Hardin Co., IL along with Hiram (age 50 KY) and Alfred SMOCK (age 40 IL). In 1850 Barney is listed in Pulaski Co., IL at age 42 IL. Thomas maybe listed in the household of Sarah SMOCK in 1830 and in the household of Hiram in 1840. The problem is that Thomas' parents are unknown. He cannot be the son of Sarah as she was a widow in 1816 and Thomas was born 1821/2. In 1822 Hiram would be 22, Barney would be 14 and Alfred would be 12. So only Hiram is an eligible sire of Thomas. I cannot find a marriage for Hiram before 1837, hence Hiram remains a possibility, but not a proved parent. There were three older males in the SMOCK household of 1810 and 1820 who remain unknown. One of them could be Thomas' father, if any one of them were a SMOCK. Need evidence of Thomas SMOCK's parents. Best regards, Hugh

    1. Mytery of C. SMOCK of Randolph Co., IL Terr. 1810
    2. All, C. SMOCK of Randolph Co., IL Terr. USC 1810 For some time I have been looking for the first name of C. SMOCK. Because his son, Hiram, was born in 1800 in KY according to the 1850 IL census, it was thought that C. SMOCK would be in the 1800 KY Census. The only C. SMOCK found in KY was a Cornelius SMOCK of Bullitt Co. There are earlier records of a Cornelius, the son of Barney SMOCK of Mercer Co., KY. This coincidence though consistent does not constitute proof that C. SMOCK = Cornelius SMOCK An analysis of C. SMOCK's descendants shows that he had grandsons, Charles and Cornelius. Either could be named after their grandfather. Charles is not a traditional family name in the SMOCK family while Cornelius is. I am particularly interested to know if Randolph Co., IL has any early records (1800-1820) which would name SMOCK as a resident of the area (tax, property, militia, etc.) Anyone with interest in this SMOCK family is encouraged to suggest additional research sources. Best regards, Hugh >>
