    1. Shawneetown, 1843
    2. Hi...I'm new to this list and of course looking for infomation. My connection to Gallatin County is James Washington Hays. JW bought land in Shawneetown in 1843. Would this be Gallatin County at that time? James Washington Hays married Margaret Bodine in Jefferson County, 1840. 1841 son, John Marion Hays was born. 1843 James Washington Hays purchases 80 acres in Shawneetown. 1853 Margaret Bodine Hays married James A. McRight (various spellings) James Washington Hays seems to now be lost. I can find no evidence of him from 1843 at the time of the land purchase. Thanks for any help / ideas . paulette tanner-newton in sw florida usa

    3. Nancy Jane Bruce (called Janice in the 1880 census) married Samuel E. Kanady in Gallatin County 1 April 1883. She was born in 1859 based on the 1880 and 1920 censuses. Samuel (1854 - 1919) was the son of Jesse Harrison Kanady and his second wife Nancy Jane Crawford, and the grandson of Moses Kanady. In the 1920 census Nancy Jane Bruce Kanady, widow, is living with her daughter Edith Hart in Dexter City, Stoddard, Missouri; but she is buried (1934) in Crawford Cemetery, Ridgway with her husband. 3. Karen -- It appears that your concern is with the 1905 biographical sketch of James T. Colbert which is made available by Jon Musgrave on the Gallatin County web site. It's a useful thing to be skeptical of the details in 19th century biographies, but I don't find anything substantially wrong with this one. John Johnson (commonly known as Johnson) Kanady (1804 - 1875) was one (the oldest) of four sons of Moses Kanady who all migrated to Gallatin County from Kentucky in the 1820s and 1830s. He married Mary Sherwood, b. 1804, (another family migrating in from Kentucky) in 1827, and they had nine children before Mary died in 1859. In December 1863 in Saline County J. J. Kannedy married Mrs Nancy Jane Pierson (abt 1821 - abt 1896). In 1839 in Gallatin County Nancy Jane Colbert had married Robert Person (sic). The biography had it as Pinson. As far as I know, John Johnson and Nancy Jane had no children. John Johnson and Mary Sherwood Kanady are buried in Kanady Cemetery near Junction. The burial site for Nancy Jane, who died 20+ years after J. J. is not known to me. To explain your concern -- The oldest child of J. J. Kanady and Mary Sherwood was named Moses (1828 - 1914) (after his grandfather [both of them]), who married Elizabeth Ann Bramlet Seaton in 1849; and their seventh child was named Johnson Kanady (1863 - 1950) (after his grandfather) who married Gertrude Spivey in 1893 (your grandparents). Now, about Garland (1835 - 1890) -- he was the nephew of J. J. Kanady, the son of J. J.'s brother Lewis. His first (!) wife was Nancy J. Smith (1842 - 1875), daughter of Peter and Sarah (Bell) Smith. Nancy died as a consequence of childbirth in 1875 and is buried in Jackson Cemetery in Ridgway. Garland Kanady then married Mary Josephine Hanna in 1877. For whatever reason, Nancy J. as a name had uncommon attraction for Kanady boys in the 1800s -- there are five in Gallatin County (Colbert, Smith, Bruce, Crawford and Moreland) plus Nancy A. Hargett. 3. Hello, For the past year or so I've been editing a new Handbook of Gallatin County History. I'm getting close to sending it to the publisher, but I need some feedback from you fine folks on the Gallatin County mailing list. Basically, I need feedback to gauge the level of interest in the book itself, but also whether you demand a hardback book or a paperback. The big difference of course will be in price. The new Handbook of Gallatin County History is a compilation of mostly 19th and early 20th century sources on Gallatin County. In other words you're reading the biography your ancestor wrote probably in his own words and syntax. Specifically, here's what's included: --- the complete version of the 1887 History of Gallatin County as published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in their five-county history of southeastern Illinois. Everything's included as in the original, with the only changes of additional section headings and paragraph breaks as desperately needed. Not only are the original footnotes still there, but also new ones noting any corrections or addition comments as needed. --- Miscellaneous Anecdotes of Early Gallatin County -- a collection of writings on everything from the early saltworks to a sketch of the 1891 grand jury. --- Military History of Gallatin County --- a collection of writings on the military actions of Gallatin County residents from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War with a special focus on the frontier Indian battles in southeastern Illinois during the decade that centered around the War of 1812 as well as some of the actions taking place in the county during the Civil War. Also included will be complete rosters (as best as can be determined) of Gallatin County soldiers in the Black War, Mexican, Civil and Spanish-American Wars. --- Gallatin County Biographies --- More than 250 biographies will be included here pulled from the 1876 State Atlas of Illinois, the 1883 History of White County (which included chapters on the northern two townships of Gallatin), the 1887 History of Gallatin County, the 1905 Memoirs of the Lower Ohio Valley and the 1912 History of Southern Illinois. Also included are a handful of other miscellaneous biographies from a scattering of sources. Plus... and probably most important of all to researchers... a full name and subject listing Index in the back of book. Every name is listed, women twice many times, once under their married name and again under their maiden name (if known). In addition to the new annotated footnotes in the 1887 history portion, all the stories included in the Anecdotes and Military History are printed verbatim from the original source and are footnoted with the source. The idea has been to take all the good stories and original source material that's scattered and put it into one volume. The reprint of the 1883 History of White County costs $90, and it's another $16 just to get an index. My idea is to make the new Handbook of Gallatin County much more affordable. I don't have the final price yet because it's still up in the air how many will be printed. Also, the page count keeps rising. The final publication should be at least 520 pages trimmed to a 5 1/2" by 8 1/2" size, which is a standard trade size. That's the same size as the White County history and the 1947 History of Saline County. It's the same size as a Boy Scout Handbook. The final retail price will probably be between $20 and $22 for a paperback and $40-45 for a hardback. Pre-orders will most likely be taken at 20 percent off of the cover price. The cover is a full-color cover with a striking picture of the State Bank of Illinois building in Shawneetown taken during the Depression. The hardback would show the cover on a dust-jacket. The book will be bound like a normal book. No plastic, no spirals, no rings. My question to you folks is whether this is something that interests you, and would you be more inclined to buy a paperback version (which will be more affordable) or the hardback version (which will be more durable) knowing you'll want to keep it for years to come. I need feedback, but everyone probably doesn't want to read about everyone else's feedback, so please send comments back directly to me rather than the list. 3. My dad fondly remembers a Gertie Abney who helped his mother with the children and housework when dad was little. He continued to visit her until she died. She had a sister Molly who married a Brown, a sister Opal and a brother Otto. Gertie also had a son named Emery. Dad also remembers playing with Emery when they were both small. I'd be interested in any additional information on this Abney family, if anyone has it. Donna

    1. Callicut Cem Info and Galliten Cem book 2 link
    2. This person lives about 4 miles away from the cemetery and says you can find if you follow these directions. Callicot Cem. is located about 4 or 5 miles north of Shawneetown off of the Shawneetown New Haven Road. I don't have the name of the road it is located on but you turn right off the blacktop on Maloney road, go to the first gravel road and turn to left (about 1 or 1 1/2 miles), the go maybe a mile where you come to a T and make a left and you will see the cemetery in front of you. This is some history of the cemetery also Callicott or Harrelson Cemetery as it was often called in the early days. It is located near the center of the NW ¼ of Section 25 T8 R9 but mostly in the West ½. The Pon (Pond) settlement arm of the Lick Creek Baptist Church in 1825 was located on or near this site. The Lick Creek records list Ezekiel Harrelson 1786‑1847 as a member, with Rev. Moses Pearce of White County, slated to spend one fourth of his time there. The following inscriptions, together with Vol. one, complete this cem. and most important for all http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~davidca/Gall-cem/Book2.htm Thank you all and sorry I did not get this post last night.
