Joe, this is quite fascinating! I have a bit of information on the MALONE, WEEMS and DUGGER connections and a lot of contacts who are following these lines. They are descended from my ggggf John "Surry" Dugger's brother, Alexander DUGGER. The families tended to migrate together from the original stomping ground in VA, through TN (Alexander's family was settling in Maury and Greene Co TN) to parts of S. Illinois. I am sure that these Dugger researchers will be anxious to contact you and compare notes. Would you mind if I shared your e-mail address with them? Carol Dugger Rio Vista, CA

Hello, Over the last couple of months Richard E. Williams has been sending me information and pictures of the small village of Elba that once existed on the North Fork of the Saline River north of Equality. I've been adding the pictures and various lists from the Elba school to the Gallatin County ILGenWeb page. Today I finally got around to pulling together a brief history of the town which apparently got its start in 1855 when Richard's great-grandfather William Matherly (or possibly his father) started a store there. The history of the town can be found at www.rootsweb.com/~ilgalla2/elba.html. Click on the links to see what downtown Elba looked like at the turn of the century as well as the covered bridge over the North Fork. There's also information on the emigration of some Elba area families to North Dakota early in the 20th Century. Sincerely, Jon Musgrave www.IllinoisHistory.com By the way, I sent back the proofs Friday for the new Handbook of Old Gallatin County and Southeastern Illinois. If everything stays on schedule at the printers the books should be back by the first part of March. For more information on the book check out www.IllinoisHistory.com/Handbook. Pre-orders can still be made at 25 percent off the $32 cover price, or just $24, plus $5 shipping and handling.
A big THANK YOU to Jon Musgrave for the article on Elba and the links attached. It was so exciting to see something on two of my relatives, Asa TARRANT and Lorenzo EDWARDS and learn a some things that I didn't know about them. I was also interested in the report about former Gallatin Co residents who went on to Bottineau, North Dakota to homestead. Does anyone know anything about the Ella DUGGER who married S. SISK? Who were her parents? This is an entirely new Dugger that I do not seem to have in my database and I am anxious to find out who her parents were. Any help appreciated! Carol Dugger
There is a John BELL listed in the 1870 Gallatin Co. census - Shawneetown Post Office - Township 9 - Range 10. He is 40 years old, born in Kentucky and has a housekeeper and five year old male living with him. Their names are probably Malinda Borreson and Cain Correson (hard to read). Does anyone have information about this John BELL and/or his parents?

Married Mike HALEY in 1851 >> You may be in luck! The 1850 census was the first to name every person. So, before she married Mike Haley, she was 17 years old and likely living with her parents. Figure out what county she was married in, and go and find the 1850 census. See if you can find the Gates family (and the Haley family too) Martha

Would the death certificate have the names of her parents listed? >> If she died in Gallatin County, you can write to Shawneetown and request it. It may or may not have the names of her parents...... depends on who the informant was, and what the informant knew. I have found MANY examples of the information being wrong, or at least "off" a little. Martha

How and where would I send for a death certificate for Eliza and what is the cost? Would the death certificate have the names of her parents listed? Thank you. Phyllis Maulding Campbell
Jon, I sent a copy of the Tribune article to several folks in Gallatin County, one of them being Rita Ann Barnett Dotson who lives in Equality. She wrote me to tell me her father, Dwight Barnett, who was a school teacher in Equality, was born in the Harlan Booten home. Mother recalled that Dwight Barnett's father's name was Harrison Barnett. I haven't yet spoken to Rita Ann to ask her if she recalled her father ever talking about the cemetery. Martha Baker Harpling
I have a mystery maybe you all can help me with! In 1880, in Gallatin Co, in Equality, there is a 4 year old boy, Jas. E. Hudgeons, listed as "grandson" with the family of Andrew J and Sarah Jane Blankenship. Who is this boy??? In 1870, again in Equality, AJ and Sarah J Blankenship are listed with their children, including a 14 year old daughter, Hannah, and a 3 year old daughter, Flora. By 1880, neither of these girls seem to be around. In 1880, there is a Hudgeons family, living in Equality. I've been to Equality, and it's not too huge, not sure how big it was in 1880! Anyway, they have a son, Monroe Hudgeons, age 28 who is listed as "divorced". Is this Monroe the father of the little boy living with the Blankenships? If yes, who is the mother? Hannah? So what happened?? By 1896, when Andrew J Blaneknship was making out his will, he listed 7 "boys" including one James Everett. Is this Jas. E.?? Was he adopted (formally or not) by his grandfather? I cannot seem to find any of these items: 1. marriage certificate between 1870-1876 of a Monroe (may have been a James Monroe or a William Monroe) Hudgeons/Hudgins and a Hannah (or other first name) Blankenship. 2. Birth record of a James E. Hudgeons, probably b. 1874-1876. 3. Divorce record of the people from #1. 4. Death record 1870-1880 of Flora (or Ida) Blankenship, b. Ohio about 1867, or Hannah Blankenship or Hannah Hudgins, b. probably Ohio about 1856. 5. Guardianship and/or adoption records between 1880-1896 with a Andrew Johnson Blaneknship and his grandson, JE Hudgins. Any HELP would be great!! This is my brick wall. thanks Martha
Is anyone researching the surname WAGLEY? I have much information to share and need information also. Phyllis
