    2. We're back. I searched for Fanny recently and found several trees that interchanged Cunnington and Cunningham. There were some Frances and Francis Cunningham's. Fanny is very likely a nickname for another name. Which one? We have no clues of where Daniel was when they married. One sure thing is the birthplace of Samuel, in "Omah" IL. Samuel gave that location in legal documents. Sam had a severe scoliosis of the spine. This is a genetic condition. Do anyone you McGhee's know if Scoliosis is in your health history? Elizabeth

    3. Glenn, That's great that you found that. I looked for such a marriage but did not find it because of the mis spelled name. I have my own database on my hard drive, the on line Illinois Marriage database, and the Harriet Vaught Book, all three places have Loucinda McGehee married Benjamine F. Vincent. I even searched my database for Lucinda, but of course it didn't come up. The likely hood is very high that Lucinda McGhee Vinson was the sister of Zarah (Zachariah) McGhee, which is what I suspected because both born in Tennessee. Now to find the proof. Have a good time. I will look a little deeper also. This year, I have seen an interesting phenomenon which is typical of the Internet. My note, from last year, is making its rounds right now, taking on a new life of its own. It was forwarded to the Listowners mailing list again this year and since then it has circled the globe a gazillion times, from South America, to Europe, to Australia and back to Puyallup, Washington, USA, more than once. I guess that means that the content is important to all of us. If others think so, then I believe it is time to repost that note again myself. Please read the text below and think of the Holiday Spirit as you go forth online. Happy Holidays to you and yours, Cyndi ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date: Thu, 31 Dec 1998 15:19:30 -0800 From: Cyndi Howells <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Message-Id: <[email protected]> Subject: Time for some patience, kindness and teaching Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hello all - Karen Isaacson and I have talked many times about how January effects our incoming e-mail flow. It is clearly a well-documented event now as we are already beginning to see it coming into play for the fourth-year running (since we first noted the phenomenon). I'm sure many of you will be seeing the same thing as List Owners and/or webmasters, so I thought I would pass on a bit of advice and food for thought. Each January we see a huge influx of newbies joining us online because Santa was generous and left a sparkling new computer under the tree. There are also many after-holidays sales which offer people the opportunity to purchase a snazzy new computer or modem. Many people get online for the first time and enthusiastically don their cyber-bikinis, hitting the surf with gusto. They are excited to be here and they are (much as we "oldbies" were) rightfully overwhelmed by all that there is to see and do. The language here is foreign to them. The technology is newer, fancier and zippier than they may have used in the past. And the way that we all participate in our giant, online genealogical society, while being very similar to offline groups, is still a bit different than they may be prepared for. In other words, it is a brave new world to them. I would like to put out a call to each of you to show these newbies that we are a friendly, welcoming and helpful group of online genealogists. To do so we all need to pitch in and show patience, understanding and kindness. We also need to put on our teaching caps and be prepared to show them the ropes. 1. Don't make assumptions. 2. Explain things in detail, include URLs and complete instructions. 3. Verify details and addresses before you send them to people. 4. Offer to help people privately via e-mail, off of the mailing lists. 5. Be prepared to explain things more than once, in more than one way. 6. Keep in mind that we were all new at one time. 7. Keep in mind that we all learn something new every day. There are several places online to which you can point newbies in order to help them learn about this new research venue. I have tried to make these easy to locate by setting up links on my site: Internet Stuff You Need To Know http://www.CyndisList.com/internet.htm Also be sure to point them to these basic starting places online: Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet http://www.CyndisList.com Your genealogical research portal onto the Internet RootsWeb http://www.RootsWeb.com See the RootsWeb Help Desk: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~help/index.htm Genealogy Resources on the Internet - Mailing Lists http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html USGenWeb http://www.USGenWeb.org Good luck and successful surfing to everyone online - both newbies and oldbies, Cyndi ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Cyndi Howells Puyallup, Washington [email protected] Cyndi's List - Over 39,400 links in over 90 categories! http://www.CyndisList.com My Book: "Netting Your Ancestors - Genealogical Research on the Internet" http://www.CyndisList.com/netting.htm ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --part1_0.5283726e.2586402d_boundary--

    2. Dave: I looked over the information you sent me, and it was very helpful. I believe I may have an answer to your last question as to the relationship of Lucinda Vinson to the McGhee family. In looking back over some information that I copied out of the White Co. Illinois marriages I found the following: Vinson, Benjamin F. to Lucinda McGehee January6, 1842 Book1 BX 2 I was unaware that I had copied this down and there was a tie to the McGehee family until your message. Maybe you know how Lucinda McGehee ties into Zachariah McGehee and if my hunch may be correct?? If this is correct then I have located Lucinda's maiden name and which Vinson that she was married to!! Let me know if you think this is correct. Thanks for all your information, Glenn.

    2. If anyone has access to the 1890 or 1900 census will you please look up Henry W. Koster. I am trying to find his entry into the U.S. from Germany. He is listed in the 1880 census as living in Eagle Creek, Gallatin County, IL.; age 54; wife: Missouri A. Koster; son: Henry T. Koster, age 11; daughter: Florence Koster, age 8. I am also trying to find Missouri A. Koster's maiden name. I think they married in Kentucky before settling down in Gallatin County. Thank you for your help. Larry Koster

    3. Thanx Carol, for sharing this cemetary web site with us. The old Daniel and Martha Willis farm just west of Ridgway "had" a cemetery on it. (my ancestors) I was told that someone removed the stones . Where? (I suppose to make more room for farming) It would be wonderful if someone like the one in the story could find and restore these old wonderful tombstones of the past in our county of Gallatin. James and his sons first appear in Gallatin County records in 1814. Owen Riley m Agnes Stout a brother to Isaac and Squire is my line. 3. Now that I read this, this Phillip below was the name mentioned as being a brother to the researcher in Hamilton Co, a brother to his ancestor....If I remember right, these lines were taken back several generations from these to the East. That's all I remember. You might be able to get an email from the Hamilton web site, in the surname area, or join their list, or you can post a query to me privately, and I'll forward to that list. 3. No Trammell grave sites but, in book no 2, talking about the War of 1812, it says this: The second war with Britain, declared on June 18-1812, intensified military activity in this area of Illinois Territory. Many expected trouble from the Indians, especially around the salt works and in the outlying areas. Several militia companies were recruited and trained in S.E. Illinois. Thomas E. Craig, a Shawneetown businessman, captained one of 67 men. After Leonard White was promoted, Phillp Tramell replaced him as captain of a company. Other captains were James Trousdale and Willis Hargrave. Some of these companies were mounted. Fred Buck was among the many names on these rosters familiar to our area. William Ellis was among those drafted the next year. He applied for veterans benefits in 1971, 1isting his home as Hickory Hi11, in Wayne County, Ill., his age as 80 yrs. He stated that he was drafted about Apr. lst 1813, for the purpose of guarding the frontier settlements againat the depredations of the Indians, serving in Capt. Barkers company, in Col.
